I bought BLACK'S LAW DICTIONARY for two basic reasons.First, the Abridged Fifth Edition was very affordable.And I also wanted to compare it with the legal dictionary that I already have.The only negative that I can think of is the age of this edition.Despite that, I have been very happy this older edition.It's a comprehensive list of terms with over 16,000 definitions. That's considerably more than Oran's Dictionary of the Law has.I found the definitions to be thorough.The pronunciation guide is another feature that I appreciate in BLACK'S.An added bonus is the U.S. Constitution in the back of the dictionary.If you are searching for an affordable, comprehensive law dictionary this edition is worthy of consideration.

I'm currently a 1L law student and have used this pocket dictionary a ton since I first got it.As a student I have access to the online edition through Nexis but I've actually found this to be easier since the search tool is not always as good as you would expect and just getting to the online version can take longer than opening up this book most of the time.I also am more of a kinetic learner and have found that the print edition helps me to retain better. Plus I just love books so it's more enjoyable to me to look it up in a book than online (and in law school every small pleasure helps).Definitely recommend it. I've found it useful and more importantly more enjoyable than an online version.UPDATE: I'm now a 3L and it's true that you don't use this dictionary as much you would expect to, especially after 1L. But I do still pull it out every so often, and seeing definitions in print form helps me to remember them.I will say though that part of me wishes I had gone with the full sized version instead of the pocket edition. It is frustrating in some upper level classes, like Property, when you go to look for a word and it isn't there.If you are concerned about the weight you carry, you will find that you will get better at carrying only what you need (or just get used to tugging around a ton of books all the time). So the pocket edition is not essential.Overall, I don't regret buying it as it's been helpful enough to warrant the 35 bucks you will spend on it. Plus Black's is the best law dictionary out there. But, if you are short on money and are trying to decide between the pocket edition and the full edition go with the full edition.

When compared to the newest, 9th edition, this 5th edition puts that one to shame! And, rightfully so! For example: I could NOT believe the definitions in 9th edition book! They are supposed to be 'legal' definitions! Definitions of words when they are used in laws and Courts, not as defined in Websters which is everyday use.Fence, for example in the 5th edition is:A hedge, structure, or partition, erected for the purpose of inclosing a piece of land, or to divide a piece of land ito distinct portions, or to separate two contiguous estates. (and more)In the 9th edition, it does NOT mention the definition shown above, but goes on ad nauseum to define how drugs and stolen goods can be sold to a fence. Not one mention of the "fence" as it pertains to real property. NOT ONE WORD!!!However, the new Editor's name, in gilded letters, LARGE gilded letters, is on the leather bound cover: Bryan A. Garner, Editor in Chief.Don't waste your money on the 9th or 8th edition.

I sought out this product because it is the last edition before the NWO began changing the dictionary. If you don't believe it, compare the definitions for the USA. The USA or US now ceases to exist legally. Now I must get a ninth edition for the new words that have since been created.This particular book is nicely padded, has a gorgeous cover, and in near perfect shape except for the damage described by seller. Seller nicely wrapped the product for shipping and it arrived within the shipping parameters. I would buy from this seller again since he gave an accurate description and knows how to wrap an item for shipping.

Extremely helpful when reading through depositions and motions. Already dog-eared after a couple weeks. Should have spring for the hard cover edition.

Worth its weight in GOLD, especially if you need legal info on what legalese means. I have difference versions. This is best one with most content that I have Would buy again

A lot of words, and light weight. Only suggestion: come with tabs to separate the letters. A lot of looking where a word is, but once I put on my own tabs, great book.

First of all the plastic in cover is peaking and when I finally went to use for class I note the pages aren’t in chronological order nor are the definitions defeating the purpose of a DICTIONARY! Now I have to repurchase at a bookstore or more reputable book seller 😔

How does one say he "loves" a dictionary? No such book is ever a page-turner or a "read in bed" tome. On the other hand, when (not if) I have to decode legalese that's thicker than the jungles of Borneo, I'll want this along. I got it because another guy recommended I have a copy at my side. After looking at ~100 terms at near-random, I'm glad I acquired it. I expect to need it. And the $200 price for a new volume is not affordable.

This book is a true gem - one of Merton's more significant works, published during his eighth year at Gethsemani Abbey. It is significant in three ways: the first half of the book is perhaps one of the best dialogues to be found anywhere on why someone would want to be a monk; the second half is an exquisite, deep and loving overview of the Benedictines, the Cistercians (especially the Trappist Cistercians), the Carthusians, and the Camaldolese. The third area of significance is that it's easy to read into Merton's portrayals of the Carthusians and Camaldolese that he was already yearning for more solitude, already feeling unrest with cenebotic (monastic) life and starting his campaign to gain permission to become a hermit at Gethsemani. Being denied that, he sought to leave the Abbey and become a Carthusian, but was blocked there as well. "The Silent Life" gives us an early glimpse into Merton's thinking as he was discerning his spiritual direction. Strongly recommended.

Merton is among those writers who profoundly affirm Wallace Stevens' fixation on 'the determining presence of the personality of the artist', speaking of the component values of any literary work. Published in 1956, 'The Silent Life' discloses a still undistracted Merton, brilliant and pure like a god. I thought this was good introduction to what the contemplative life consists of i.e. discipline and commitment. In addition, Merton provides a historical summary of the contemplative orders of the Catholic Church. As one who considers himself a contemplative Christian, I found it to be a very satisfying read. I am a great fan of Merton's and found this book very enjoyable and enlightening.

One of Merton's earlier books regarding the monastic life. The descriptions of life as a Cistercian monk, its simplicity and deep spirituality soothe the reader with a balm of peace. Historical context is woven throughout, and provides an understanding of the methods used to this day to keep a religious community together both physically and spiritually. Merton came into controversy in his later actions and writings, but he was a very compelling writer and this was written in the earlier, and more joyful period of his Cistercian life. My favorite books by Merton are this, The sign of Jonas, and The Seven-Storey Mountain.

There is always a need to explain the monastic life on its own terms because the devotees of tomorrow come from society at large, which we all know, is largely materialistic in the western world and dismissive of the value of the contemplative religious life. We all have seen the advertisements that mock monastic life.The American monk Thomas Merton (1915- 1968) explains monastic life and the various Roman Catholic Orders in America. The monk withdraws from the world in order to travel directly to God. He writes, We must always remember that silence, solitude, recollection and prayer are the most important elements in the monastic life (p. 33). The first belief is that God is Life and therefore Man's deepest need is God. This explains the first Commandment Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with thy whole heart, and with thy whole soul and with all thy strength. The Monastic Peace (page 1-57) is a general presentation on the goals and nature of monastic life using powerful Latin descriptions such as Puritas Cordin (Purity of heart) and In Veritate (In truth). Serious readers or enquirers must read this chapter several times because it goes to the heart of Benedictine Rule whether Cistercian or Camaldolese. The branches of the Benedictine Rule are covered in chapters The Cenobitic Life (page 59- 125) and The Hermit Life (page 127-171).The heart of monastic life is the same today as it was in 1957 when this book was written. In the concluding chapter Merton writes, Even though he may never leave his monastery, never speak a word to the rest of men, the monk is inextricably involved in the common suffering...he is appointed to fight these battles on a spiritual front, in mystery, by self-sacrifice and prayer (pp 172-173) To quote The Letter of Paul to the Ephesians 6:12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

I've been in the investment profession for 5 years now and am a CFA charterholder. I can assure anyone considering this book, it is a must for your collection. Even the best practitioners need refreshing and this book is short and to the point in a variety of Fixed Income analysis concepts. One of my favorite reference materials that exist.

I just started reading this book as a review of some things and so far I just want to emphasize that I am very happy with the purchase. The use of actual Bloomberg screens has reminded of screens that I don't use too often anymore. While I have found the book, so far, to be very good, there are some issues with some examples given in the book. E.g., in Chapter 5, the author references Exhibit 5.11 to help explain some basic spread measures (nominal and Z-spread); only problem is that the security used in the exhibit differs from what the author references in the text. The information in the text is still helpful but referncing the reader to an incorrect exhibit is somewhat confusing.

I just received this book in the mail, so I have not baked from it yet. I would have to say that it doesn't look like it for anyone who is new to baking, and that I am not. I'm thinking "advanced" bakers would do the best. Yes, I saw "cobbler" and "chocolate tarts" and blueberry pie", but I also saw strudel and brioche --these are for most beginners. You might want to be aware of that before you buy. I do agree with several of the other reviewers...the print is hard to read. The ingredients list is darker, but the instructions are more difficult. The hardest to read are the gray background pages, while the white pages are a bit easier than the gray are. Lovely photos...I wish it had more of those. I find that to be true of many cookbooks though. Maybe checked it out in a store first, and then decide...you can always come back and order here.

I recently picked up baking as a hobby and purchased this book based on the good reviews. So far, I've made the traditional Vienna apple strudel / strudel dough, olive oil dough, and a quiche. Everything turned out delicious. The instructions were clear and easy to follow.On a side note, the author appears to take a practical approach in providing weight measurements in this book - for example, only volume measurements tend to be provided for pie or quiche filling recipes whereas weight and volume measurements are provided for dough recipes (where precision is likely to be of greater importance).Overall, I am very happy I purchased this book.

I’ve tried many of the pie doughs in this book so far. All are solid but none are my favorite. Book gives good tips for someone newly exploring the world of pies and pastry, like me!

Wonderful, beautiful book from the pastry master Nick Malgieri. I have some of his other baking books, and this one is the best. I especially wanted it for his demystification of the strudel making process!!!!!

I couldn't be happier with this recipe book! I have made two tarts and they both have been delicious. The recipes are easy to follow and the results are consistent and lovely. I particularly enjoyed the chocolate raspberry tart with chocolate cookie crust. I was incredibly pleased with the result and it tasted like something you would sinfully indulge in after an expensive dinner at a fancy restaurant. Nick Malgieri truly has perfected these recipes and provides a lot of information and tips with each type of dough and filling. However, I do advise before you begin to make something to thoroughly read all the information applicable to the recipe you are following-- I have noticed in both "Pastry" and "Perfect Cakes" that important information is sometimes found in places that you don't expect, for example, under the techniques portion of the book. The book itself is beautiful, too. The cover has a nice, matte finish, and the pages are printed on a thick, matte paper as well that have a great feel and texture. However, be careful handling the book while you are baking if you want to keep it in good condition. If you are looking for a lovely book with interesting and tasty pastry recipes, both sweet and savory, BUY THIS BOOK! It has a wonderful variety for all preferences and tastes.

This book was good at the begining but as it went on it got better and better.As you got to see into each lives you got to know them like they were people you know in your own life.Sometimes you could see the problem someone had and you could see how it worked out to solve it.The ending comes tigether like a good book should.Makes you feel happy that they are happy.Should be a follow up book!

I loved this book - I couldn’t put it down .It’s a very enjoyable read . I read that this is a first book by this Author, Louise Guy in this genre & I saw one more from her that I ordered right away. I hope she will continue to write many more books to come . Thank you Louise Guy can’t wait to read the next one “Fortunate Friends”

This book reminded me a little of the book, Big Little Lies. Everybody lies everyday, even if it is lies we tell ourselves. I love the characters with their problems big and small. Emma with her shoplifting, Louise with her issues, and all the others. I loved read this and would recommend to anyone who needs a dramatic reading. I will buy more books and more of her stories.

This book was just okay. I found it be not very believable. I did enjoy the friendships that formed between the women, but all in all I found the story to be a bit far fetched.

This was a cute story. The plot was pretty light. (although I think the author wanted to make it seem deeper.) I read it easily in a day. I was interested enough to purchase the next book by the author. I have not started it yet.

I read this straight through; it was so good I couldn’t put it down. Such a great story should be made into a movie. Never a dull moment, very good character development. I highly recommend.

Everyday Lies by Louise Guy held my attention with the storyline and character interaction. It is a real page turner.

This book is amazing! The first 20 pages had me hooked. Apostle Kim breaks down everything from operating in your coast to generational curses to everything in between. I love how she breaks down Greek and Hebrew words so you can understand what scripture means. This book is a must read! I’m already breaking curses of familiar spirits off my family.

A must read I enjoy reading this book and she exposeing the devil behind the scenes working secretly in our lives.

When an author says God hates people being unequally yoked MORE than he hates divorce, you know you are in for a bit of twisted scripture. Nevertheless, I was still hoping for some sound theology and testimonies of deliverance. A dream about her table running round the house didn't resonate with me. Disappointing. I was hoping for something more insightful. I have read far better books on this subject. This is the only book I have removed from my device as I certainly won't refer to it again.

No doubt discussing the topic of spiritual warfare and demonic influence in all its aspects is desperately needed in the churches. The need for more prevalent prayer lifestyle is needed also. But I found myself wondering and asking repeatedly after reading: Why do I sense there is an appeal to the reader’s emotions more than to his/her heart and mind? More emotionally-charged than necessary. Secondly, I felt the author took too much liberty in interpreting the Greek text and meaning of words, as though belaboring a point. Not enough word study given that would show richness of the Greek text especially with cross references, without making it an academic exercise. The general topic strikes at the heart of life and presence and dominance of evil in the world today in all its ugly manifestations, not to mention its destruction of lives and homes and relationships. Writing is understandably tough, but the flow of the text was overly emotional. Still, prayers for the author. It’s a very touchy subject but badly needed to shed light on it and drive people to the wonderful person and presence of our Lord where even demons submit for they know who is really God more than we do.
