The only good thing about this book is that it is short.This is a cliched self help book. It's the kind of thing you might find in a magazine while waiting in the Dr's office.It is totally misrepresented and not about Stoic philosophy. Instead it takes the usual self help advice and tries to wrap it in some Stoic ideas to make it sound unique. Like a little bit of sugar makes the medicine go down. It attempts to give gravitas to a tired group of formulas for success.To make it worse the writing is at a third grade level. The author appears to be talking to children.

I thought its gonna be hard for me to learn thisBUT with the help of this book I just learn anything and everything Stoicism. The book might sounds complicated but it is now this was written in a very simple way for better and easier understanding.

Not knowing anything about the topic, I appreciated the author plainly and simply explaining the history (they also gave me a way to skip ahead if I was not a beginner) .. It gave me a lot to think about, causing me to re-read things the next day to make sure I understood. I initially thought this would be a quick read, which it could have been. However, this book is not one of those read, set down, and move on type of books. It is read, think ... ponder, re-read and think some more. Thus ... it was well written, and something I can recommend.

I read an earlier version of this book back in the early 00s. Still a great read and reference for 802.11 based network design and troubleshooting. Couple this with any CUWN books and projects.

I buy this book because its second version is published in 2015 (and some Amazon comments for it is very good, but today, when check some of these comments, it just give no sense at all, for example, one comments said good thing about this book for IPv6, but this book did not discuss IPv6 at all!), so I think it should include more recent topics. But I found I just waste my money. All the topics descripted in is book is very shallow. Some is not correct at all (for example, its description for 802.1X port-based authentication is not correctly in page 138-143.).The 2nd version of "802.11 wireless networks the definitive guide" is published 12 years ago. Hope the author publish the third version soon.

Any version of this book is great--it has evolved as the field of linguistics has evolved, and since this is an older version, is more affordable than the most recent edition--I use this in my undergraduate and graduate classes alike--best general introduction to the various sub disciplines of linguistics, such as morphology, syntax, phonology, phonetics, and so forth, that there is available today. Perhaps a bit too much on sign language, depending on the volume, and a somewhat outdated (even the newest version) and chaotic view of syntax, it still is the benchmark upon which similar books are based. I have used the 4th, 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th editions over the years, and though I have constantly looked for others, tried some here and there, this is still the one I return to for my basic text in my introductory linguistics courses.

This is a good textbook, as textbooks go. The exercises look especially valuable, although I haven't done them yet (I'm pre-reading this for a class I will be taking).The explanations could be better in many cases. It takes a special skill and perspective to write to people who don't already have a deep understanding of your subject. The writers of this textbook have somewhat failed to do this. So along with this book, I am reading The Study of Language, which I find to be a simpler, more clear presentation of the topic.

This is a very good introduction to theoretical linguistics and its subdisciplines. Some of the concept are somewhat difficult, but it's nothing that a good re-read can't fix. It covers all the components that make up linguistics i.e. phonology, syntax, etc. but it also adds some cool chapters on language and the brain, language change, and psycholinguistics which are all plusses in my book. This textbook provides good cartoons to illustrate some key points,the exercises are good for beginner's (perhaps some too easy) and the authors provide some really good suggested readings although some might the suggestions insanely difficult to read even after reading this book (for example, after reading the chapter on syntax, it suggests you read Chomsky's minimalist program. If this is the student's first introduction to syntax, then I really doubt they could tackle that book). All in all, I think its a perfect book to use in an introductory language class. The only problem I have with this book is its price. Way too expensive!!!

I used this text for an Introduction to Linguistics course, and found it very informative and entertaining. Although the text often mentions how its content would benefit ESL teachers, I feel that anyone interested in studying languages and/or interested in analyzing the various components of a language (for example morphology, syntax, grammatical elements, etc.) would find this text a fascinating read.The book is divided into logical and digestible chapters to give the student a concrete, general overview of what language is and the various theories pertinent to the study of it. The included exercises were relevant and helpful, encouraging the student to apply and practice what was covered and encouraging thoughtful discussion in the classroom. I also enjoyed the various drawings and humorous references in the book, that made the content enjoyable and easy to digest (who says learning has to be boring?). I still refer back to this book every so often simply because it is full of fascinating theories and concepts - highly recommended.

I started an MA program in Linguistics with a concentration in TESOL. The intro class required this text as its only text. The price on amazon.com was approx. $20 less than the bookstore/other store prices. It is a good value for the Amazon price.Aesthetics: It's a softcover book so it will get wrinkled at some point. There are cartoons in the chapters that break up the text and illustrate some go points.Info: The information is in an easy to comprehend format that is organized well. As you move on past morphology into syntax, the the info becomes more technical and complex. I suggest taking notes as you go so you can process the info better. The info is presented in a way that is as clear cut as they can get. My one gripe is that they constantly reference later chapters for info they bring up earlier.Overall: If you need to get this for a linguistics course or as a supplement, it's a good deal. If you are just dabbling, beware that the book gets technical and slightly confusing at chapter 3 or 4.

It deftly avoids the overly pedantic tone of most books on linguistics (such as _Women, Fire, and Dangerous Things_) with a casual yet scholarly touch, along with a sprinkling of humor than never descends into the sophomoric. A selection of appropriate cartoons adds a nice touch as well.This review refers to the seventh edition.

There are many parts of language that can be confusing, but this author explains language elements in easy to understand writing. I would not recommend this book for the lay person; however, it is a great resource for those who are interested in the make up of languages.

Initially, Glenn seems the most enthusiastic. This is a high-stakes reunion with neither fast-food restaurants nor fluffy hotel-guaranteed futons. Given his literary and romantic-adventurer disposition, considerable hiking experience, as well as intense commitment to the project, it makes sense that he would invest a great deal in pleasing everyone. Wonderful book!

I found this to be an excellent book to learn about the history of Egmont Key with much of the information the authors obtained from a woman who grew up on Egmont and knew exactly what had occurred over the years. The authors also obviously did much research into the very early years, 1800's, to provide information for the reader.I first saw Egmont in the mid 50's as a boy while fishing with my dad during a family vacation, after having moved to the area in the late 50's it was not until the late 70's that I discovered what I had seen as a child. Over the years I became interested in the history of the area I lived and Egmont was high on the list of curious places. Well now thanks to Donald and Carol Thompson the authors my curiosity has been mostly satisfied I now need only to go there and walk around.Excellent book if you to, are curious.

Given as a gift to my better half history buff. Really enjoy the history!

I am a fan of Sarah Vowell's, owning most if not all of her books. She is extremely knowledgeable but I must say her sardonic writing gets tiring after a while. Not everything about the American Revolution, George Washington, and one of his favorite "sons" Lafayette, is funny. It just isn't. And while we do need to lighten up and understand the quirky nature of history in general and American history in particular, Vowell's voice in this book simply gets tiring. I am not impressed with this one, although I do admire Vowell's brilliance and ability as a writer. Just hope she expands her horizons with her next effort. If she focuses on something like the American Civil War and tells us about it the same manner she does with this one, I'm going to return the book. Vowell needs to expand the way she tells her stories beyond being cynical or sardonic.

I'd heard about Sarah Vowell, but I was never interested in reading any of her books until I heard her being interviewed about this one. Something about what she said intrigued me, so I got it. It won't be the last book of hers that I read -- in fact, I've got another one on order already. She reminds me of Bill Bryson, though I've only read one of his books, in that she provides lots of history combined with contemporary wit and humor and a sense of the uncanny connections between historical events separated by generations. For example, she discusses a connection between the story of Lafayette and Herman Melville that I found intriguing, but there are quite a few other examples. She also makes some American icons (and their British counterparts) come alive in ways that traditional (i.e., often bland) history does not.I have only one criticism of the book, really: the story of Lafayette recedes in the background (sometimes out of the picture entirely) in favor of her retelling of key episodes in the Revolutionary War; I didn't really expect a history of the War and was disappointed that Lafayette vanishes at times. However, she does a very good job in describing the weird coincidences and serendipity that resulted in the defeat of the British.I also have a second complaint, but not against Ms. Vowell (well, not really). There was one instance where she talks about a solider named Stephen in one place and a few pages later he becomes Stephens (or maybe it was Steven and Stevens; I can't recall). As I often ask, where were the editors? If I caught this on a casual read, why didn't someone else catch it? Maybe having to do an index would have helped.

Sarah Vowell’s acerbic, insightful wit comes through loud and clear in this fascinating account of French General Lafayette and his role in the American Revolution, but it took me a while to adjust to her irreverent banter in print--as well as being an author Vowell is also known for her radio pieces on This American Life. This book runs almost 270 pages without any chapter breaks, and reads like the long-winded but mesmerizing stand-up routine of a highly knowledgeable, history obsessed comedian who knows how to use humor to make a point.Lafayette was still a teenager when he left his young bride behind and snuck out of France to join the American Revolution against the wishes of his family, but he ended up becoming such a key figure in the winning of the war that cities all over the country are named for him. Vowell has a special knack for revealing the personalities of the many historical figures she writes about, their foibles, revealing quirks, and strengths. Since Lafayette had a close relationship with George Washington he features prominently in the book and I really appreciated getting a clearer picture of the man behind the myth. Vowell even manages to make battles and military strategy interesting, in part by keeping her focus on the people involved, and in part by not overlooking the missteps or ironies of the situations.Vowell finds plenty of opportunities to relate the struggles of the Revolutionary period to American politics today, pointing out that many current ideological divisions and tendencies have an origin, or at least an analog, dating back to the founding of the country. The book also covers the aftereffects of the Revolutionary War in France and Britain, and the America of 1824, which was when John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson competed in a notorious presidential election and the then elderly Lafayette made a return trip to the country that was still so besotted with him that two thirds of the population of New York City welcomed him ashore. While researching the book Vowell visited historic sites in America and France and she takes readers along on those trips too, giving us her impressions of tourist destinations like Williamsburg and Valley Forge while relating what happened there in the past.In this book Vowell manages the neat trick of being both funny and stirring. She clearly loves history, and she makes it very easy to join her in that passion.
