my daughter was so so excited about these books. but the point of them is that beginning readers are practicing their reading skills. to me, this means that the books should have a LOT of sight words, as well as words that sound the way they are spelt. in these books there are a LOT of words that are just plain not gonna work for a beginning reader to sound out correctly. chef, and musician and bouquet are not words that little kids can sensibly sound out. so as much as my daughter loves the pictures, I end up reading the majority of the books, which sort of defeats the purpose.

I was expecting each book to be around the same length and quality of one of the "I Can Read" level 1 books. We have a ton of those, and I highly recommend them. These were more like thin little pamphlets than actual books. They remind me of something you might get in a kids' meal at a fast food restaurant. They seem really cheap. Not worth the price to me.

I was going to save these for Christmas until my daughter spotted them. She loves them! She's only three, and she doesn't read (yet), but can use the illustrations to finish the sentence. I will read the beginning, and she would use the clues to guess what the sentence is saying. Due to the repetitive pattern of the books, my daughter is able to follow along and continue "reading" page after page. I also liked how the pages are sturdy. Great product for any beginning reader!

Purchased these books for a beginning reader (Age 6, 1st grade). The books are super simple, approximately 10 pages long. The type/font is large and there are no more than 6-8 words on a page and there is an accompanying picture with the words to assist with the words. The stories are repetitive and these use a lot of frequently used sight words. The DRA level of these books is probably a 4. My daughter mastered these super fast so probably good to have Level 2 and above on deck to keep the reading magic happening.

My 5 yo daughter loves these simple stories. She is just barely starting to sound out words, so the repetitive phrases in these books are great. Yes she does need help with many of the words, but then the same words will appear throughout the story and she can recognize them. The pictures give good context clues to assist her in identifying the words as well.

My daughter loves this book set. There are stickers and a certificate when you complete the series. She was reading every chance she gets to sign her certificate. I've ordered several more as gifts for other little princesses!

Very nice for my daughter learning to read. She struggled with reading so getting some books with characters she enjoyed was tremendously helpful. She began to enjoy reading and improved her skills.

Bought this for my 5 yr old grand daughter and she loves the books. Everytime she comes over she wants to read them. It makes her feel grown up I guess. She sounds out the letters and tries to form the words which is a great start to reading. The words are large and not many on each page - which is really nice.

I gritted my teeth at the cost of this book; now I'm glad I paid. This is a gold mine of incredibly well researched essays by different scholars who can actually write as well as read. I especially liked Morris Rossabi's "the 'decline' of the central Asian caravan trade" (I am quite drawn to the mystique of the Silk Route), but it also has articles about the trans-Saharan trade routes, 1500-1600, world bullion flows 1450-1800, a study comparing the Dutch and English East Indies companies, "evidence from the stock and foreign exchange markets". This is not a book for a casual reader; you need some real interest in how modern trade patterns evolved from the 14th to the 18th centuries. But it is an economically-minded historian's delight!

Most of the chapters discuss European trading activities during the period, and the European colonies in the Americas. However, there are well-written chapters on Africa, India and China as well. All articles evidence extensive research.This was the period during which European fleets bore soldiers to all parts of the earth.They enforced the monopolies of the Dutch and English East India Companies, the Spanish treasure fleets from the New World, and the Portugese Asian trading posts.They took slaves from Africa to the Americas. They took gold and silver from the Americas to Asia. They took sugar and tobacco from the Americas to Europe. They took tea, spices, jewels and cotton cloth from Asia to Africa and to Europe.So broad an exposition has limited depth. One wishes sometimes for more detail than a book of such scope could possibly deliver. Recommended strongly for those who want a context for the events of world history between the middle ages and the industrial revolution.

Brilliant mind, and unengaging writing. Hard to plow through this classic of queer theory, but, I'm told, it's worth it.

Reading it seems dated now but it's such a classic, anyone interested in gender studies should have a copy of this book... even though it's almost impossible to read. The cover has a pleasing rubbery/matte finish too.

I did not give this book 5 stars because (1) often I found Butler not clearly expressing her own ideas and opinions as opposed to weaving too much into the accounts she gave of others and (2) her position is not clearly cognizant of its own premises. Specifically, Butler is taking to task the issue of the subject, subject-object dualism, and issues of power. However, her work presumes that only one theory of the subject is possible, that it requires subject-object dualism--which she rejects--and her theory of power is unclear and messy. She wants to get rid of the idea of a "SUBJECT" and leave room for agency, in the possibilities that exist between the different ways people are constructed through different knowledges. Yet, the way she gets rid of the subject entails that nothing exists to be free, to have agency. IMHO this analysis needs more subtlety here.It also needs to be clear about how the rejection of modern subjectivity goes hand in hand with the rejection of subject-object dualism. Do other forms of subjectivity--or more importantly agency--exist outside of subject-object dualism.In short she does not question the presumptions of the Nietzschean-Foucaltian genealogy. Thus, she leaves herself open to legitimate attacks.Is the book worth reading--YES! Butler's analysis raises great questions and challenges for traditional approaches to subjectivity. Yet, the limitations are very strong because they presume too much.

This is one of the most important texts that I have ever read. Life changer. Butler's writing is simultaneously complex, rigorous, and accessible.

This book is very dense and difficult to get through. However, if you stick with it, you'll be glad you did! Butler presents very compelling arguments about gender, sexuality, and gender construction/performance, that will definitely alter the way you think about gender.

Good book

Butler is of course incredibly thoughtful and intelligent, and an important read for anyone interested in gender theory/performativity/feminist studies. However, this particular edition had an annoying number of typos; I'm not sure if it was proofread.

Great ideas but very hard to follow. The writing style is one that I don't care for.

This is an important book! Like many others, I was deeply moved when I read "Three Cups of Tea" a few years ago. I had intended to make a donation, but somehow never got around to it--now I'm glad I didn't. The basic story of "Three Cups of Tea" is false, as are most of the claims Greg Mortenson makes in it. His CAI foundation bought thousands of his books to donate to schools and others, paid extravagant travel expenses for him to promote it and for speaking engagements while Mortenson kept all the royalties and fees. When these facts began to be made public, like the typical sociopath he told one lie after another to attempt to cover-up or justify his actions. The state of Montana finally stepped in and fined him, and he is prevented from heading the organization. But, most disturbing is the fact that he is still on the board of directors, still draws a salary, and the institute still gets donations! Krakauer makes other important points, such as how much we all want some "good news" from this part of the world and are therefore eager to help when it seems something is working, and how that Mortenson has hurt not only those close to him, employees, donors, the people he was supposed to help, but other organizations who really do good work, but find donors wary of being taken inagain.

In typical Krakauer style, it is well researched and well written. I heard about the feud between Mortenson and Krakauer a few years ago. Then someone told me they refused to watch the movie Everest, based on Krakauer's book,Into Thin Air, because of his anti-Mortenson stance. So I decided to read this book to see the other side of the argument. I personally never gave money to Mortenson's charity, and ater reading this, I'm very glad I didn't.

While there are always two sides to any story I simply can't imagine anyone being able to make an effective defense of Mortenson's many disreputable acts as presented in this exhaustive report. Far too many discrepancies exist to be easily explained as missteps or simplifications in the service of making complex events more easily absorbed by the readers of Three Cups Of Tea as Mortenson continues to maintain. Ego run amuck followed by endless self serving rationalization pretty much sums up my personal take on the recipe involved in brewing those Three Cups of Tea!

John Krakauer exposes the lies and fraud by the author of Three Cups of Tea. Is his usual investigative style, Jon tries uncover the character of a man with good intentions who, nevertheless embellished the stories of how he came to be an instrument in the establishment of schools in the back country of Afghanistan and Pakistan, and later used the foundation he created to enrich himself rather than the intended recipients.

Having been caught in the same network of lies as so many others, reading the account of the duplicitous nature of the “beloved “ Mr Mortenson just made my blood boil. My daughter and her husband really went all out to promote this jerk. Buying copies of the first book and shipping them to those who asked in return for a promise of donations, only to have the whole enterprise blow up in their faces ...disgusting.

Exhaustively researched, enlightening, sobering. I love Krakauer's writing - it's no hyperbole to say his books have changed the course of my life, so it was hard to bear his heartbroken, vitriolic jeremiad, justifiable though it is. And probably just as hard to bear is the downfall of an admired character like Mortenson, who, like so many, start down that road paved with good intentions but lack the inner fortitude to withstand "the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune". If you've read "Three Cups of Tea" you owe it to humanity to read Krakauer's follow-up. Then go out and do small acts of local kindness that you can see through to the end and won't bring you fortune and fame.

I'll keep this succinct: my bride Pat and I fell into a bit of a windfall not long ago. We had both recently finished reading Mortenson's Three Cups of Tea. We kicked around the idea of sending Mortenson's Central Asia Institute a donation that would have been substantial for us. I cannot recall why we ultimately did not make such a contribution; it may be that we opted to donate to projects closer to home. At any rate, after reading Krakauer's article, I am glad we donated elsewhere.

After reading an article in Parade magazine I couldn't wait to read Greg Mortenson's book, Three Cups of Tea, and his attempts to set up schools in remote areas. However, later news articles started to paint a different picture of what his foundation was actually accomplishing and at what cost. I kept hoping it was all a simple problem that could be easily fixed. However, Jon Krakauer, an early supporter, does a thorough job of researching and backing up a history of fictionalized exploits and financial mismanagement by Mortenson that convinced me that Mortenson is in a world of his own making, spinning tales and spending foundation money with no concern for accountability. A wake-up call for anyone wanting to donate to a charity. Most disappointingly, Mortenson gives no indication that he believes he has done anything wrong. A good read.

I have two grown sons, and though I am not a mother of girls, as a teacher and cheer coach I have personal relationships with many girls during the school year. Throughout my career, I have prayed for many girls (and boys), but this book shows me ways I can better focus my prayers for many specific situations that young people face. Along with the scripture-based prayers, each chapter contains "Girl Talk" activities for moms and daughters (divided into three age groups---little girls, middle girls, and big girls), wonderful and practical ways for moms to engage girls of all ages in conversations tied to the very prayers they have been praying for their daughters. No girls have too many people praying for them, so even though I am not their mom, I will be using this book to help guide my prayers for the many girls I love. If you have girls you love, whether they are your daughters, granddaughters, students, nieces, or friends, this book is a wonderful resource.

I loved this book, as evidenced by all the notes in the margins, underlined sections, and dog-eared pages! I thought it was a fantastic guide for praying SPECIFIC Bible-based prayers for my daughters. It really revealed some weaknesses in my heart and reminded me of important truths that I hadn’t thought about since becoming a mom. Thank you so much for this TREASURE Teri Lynne!

My 9 yr old loves to read and in his 4th grade class they have to read non fiction so I thought he would enjoy the story of Babe Ruth since we are Yankee fans. He couldn't stop talking about it. He wants to read more about him.
