Then Sings My Soul by Robert J. Morgan is a compilation of classic hymns that includes the music, words and story behind the song.The book is divided into sections that include Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving and Favorites. On one side of the page is the music and words, and on the other side is the story and some fun facts behind the hymn. There are also some Biblical quotations upon which the hymn is based.Not having any background in music, and being rather ignorant of most history, I found the information included to be both interesting and entertaining.This would be a nice gift for a Sunday school teacher, music or choir teacher. The book itself has a neat finish to the pages, they're sort of rumply and ragged.I gave this 4 of 5 stars because I didn't care for the way the book was organized. I didn't understand why Christmas was at the front or how some of the "favorites" were chosen.Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free for review from BookSneeze, a blogger program. This book was exactly what I expected! The hymns are printed on the left-hand page with the song's origin on the right. The quality is great as well - it has a silky cover with the bookmarking flaps. My husband and I purchased it as a Mother's Day gift for his mom and I almost didn't want to give it up...

Print version is great! Print gets 5 stars. DIGITAL GETS 2 STARS because the digital version is not especially useful when I’m trying to read the music as I sing.HERE’S WHY: The words and music are presented as sheet music, but each line is a separate image. If I enlarge the first line of words and music so I can read them in Kindle on my iPad mini, when I get to the end of the line I must then close that image and go through the process of enlarging the next line. I find that starting and stopping like that creates frustration and eliminates the pleasure of singing the hymn. I tried enlarging the font, which, predictably, did not affect the images containing sheet music.AS A CUMBERSOME WORK-AROUND, I just now spent some time fiddling with options for ZOOM under ACCESSIBILITY, which is in GENERAL in the SETTINGS app on the iOS 11.2.0. Within the Kindle app, I switched to one-column view, and then with the ZOOM control, I RESIZED THE LENS to include all images of the desired sheet music, and adjusted magnification accordingly. This way I can comfortably sing the entire hymn without interruption. HOWEVER, since I am not visually impaired, I do not need the “zoomer” active ALL the time, so I will need to turn it on in settings before I use the digital hymnal, and then turn it off again afterward. Not a terribly huge deal, I think, but I feel such gyrations shouldn’t be necessary for someone with normal vision, and it may become more trouble to me than it’s worth. They can do better. I’ll try the zoomer for a while to see what I think of it.

I noticed this book on a book rack in my grocery store - just when I was in need of a gift for a friend who was in rehab. Since my friend is a retired pastor, I thought reading about the hymns he is so familiar with would be perfect. This week I received a thank you note from his wife who is finding "Then Sings My Soul" something they can share, but she also uses it for her private devotions. Behind each of the "old" hymns is a story of human experience - sorrow, joy, life changing trials, and the reader is inspired, encouraged, and has new appreciation for each hymn. I have since used this book as a perfect gift for those who are shut-in, going through difficult times, and those who simply love the hymns. Each page includes the music, verses and the story - just right for a devotional book or to use as a program for a group.

Purchased as a required book for our homeschool curriculum this coming year. Each hymn has a two page spread: one with sheet music and another with a brief explanation how the hymn came to be. Many hymns were unfamiliar to me, so I am looking forward to learning them. A companion cd would have been a nice addition.

I was disappointed with this book. I expected the story behind the song, but for the most part it was a short biographical sketch of the songs author. The generic statement "it was during this time he(she) penned this hymn" was used repeatedly and did nothing to tie the hymn to a specific time or experience in the authors life.

This book gives fascinating and often inspiring insights into the history of many favorite old hymns of the church and I have enjoyed learning many of those stories. I knocked a couple stars off my review, however, because of the publisher's choice of binding. While the spine-binding seems to be very solidly done, the page edges are rough and uneven. While this may yield the feel of an "old book" I find it distracting and difficult to use when thumbing through the pages.

Does have some good information on the band members and how they started. Certainly not dumbed down for a child. But, I thought it would discuss the music a bit more. It lacked enthusiasm and not sure a kid would love this book. Great series but somewhat disappointing book.

This is a book I would have given ANYTHING (within bounds of reason) for as a child. I love it! This is a delightful read that will hopefully introduce this next generation to the Beatles and the social and musical impact they had on the world. It is an excellent teaching tool for parents and educators.I have always believed, from the time I was a very little girl, that the Beatles have set new standards in music. I think this book does an excellent job of introducing the act you've known for all these years to the next generation. The Beatles are timeless.

I am a third grade teacher and author Mike Venezia is the best. I have also purchased his entire set of artist and president's books for my students to read every year. They love the books. They are educational and entertaining. You will not be disappointed with this Beatles biography. The text and art work is wonderful. Thank you Mike!

This is a great quick overview for kids and adults, giving important facts and interesting bits of trivia. Illustrations are eye-catching.

If you haven't read your child (or to yourself) the Mike Venezia books, get them all. You'll learn a lot.

It is nice to see that along with Ludwig Van Beethoven, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and Peter Tchaikovsky that author/illustrator Mike Venezia is also looking at 20th century types like Duke Ellington, George Gerswhin, Igor Stravinsky, and the Beatles for his Getting to Know the World's Greatest Composers series. In case the young readers who come across this book do not know, Venezia points out that from 1964 to 1970 the Beatles were the most popular musical group in the world. Unlike most of the other great composers Venezia looks at the Beatles never had any real musical training and were pretty much self taught. Venezia talks about the origins of rock 'n' roll and the influence of particular artists on the Beatles. He then provides early biographies for John, Paul, George and Ringo, with each of the Fab Four getting their own cartoon, before providing a brief history of the band.The actual compositions of the Beatles are dealt with in only general terms. The only songs that get mentioned are "She Loves You," because of the cheery "yeah, yeah, yeah" part, Hello Goodbye" because there is a photo of them performing it, and the 40-second final piano chord of "A Day in the Life" from the "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" album. Venezia does provide some basic music appreciation lessons talking about the Beatles experimentation with different kinds of instruments, bringing in musicians from symphony orchestras, and such. However, this is no substitute for actually listening to the group's music. Of course, once you start talking about great Beatles songs, where do you stop? Just have your young reader put on a Beatles album while they read the book.The biographical sections on the early years of the four Beatles and their early days trying to make a name for themselves will prove of most interest to young readers. My only real complains about this volume would be that it really does not talk about the impact the Beatles had on popular culture, which was immense, and that except for the difference in Ringo's nose you cannot tell the Fab Four apart in Venezia's cartoons. I was sort of looking forward to better caricatures than this, to be honest.

Getting to Know the World's Greatest Composers, The Beatles is an entertaining and informative edition in Mike Venezia’s nonfiction collection on composers. My daughter and I have been a fan of Venezia’s other series on the U.S. Presidents, scientists, and artists; it was no surprise we would enjoy this book as well. His series are perfect for exposing elementary and junior high aged students to a large variety of topics with simple writing and memorable humorous comics.

Each chapter is maybe 5-6 pages long, but will leave you deep in thought, enabling you to see God as you never thought possible.After having been through the series, Behold Your God, our men's group followed up this excellent teaching with The Knowledge of the Holy. After reading just a few chapters, it leads you to a realization, as Tozer teaches, that the purest way to God is through faith and love, in real relationship, and not through the intellect. Because man is a finite being, earth bound and given to his own reconceived notions of God, we are likely to build idolatrous views of God in the mind and intellect. God is all loving, and because He is, He desires to be in intimate relationship with each one of us. Once we undertake such a pursuit, God takes you on a spiritual journey that will last a lifetime. Love the Lord your God and pursue Him only. Chapter 21, on the Holiness of God, could be one of his best.

I'm a Th.M. moving toward the Ph.D in theology. So needless to say I have read and own my fair share of Systematic Theologies and/or volumes specifically dedicated to the Doctrine of God. Even among all those offerings by some lofty scholars of theology, Tozer's seemingly diminutive book is probably worth more to me than all the others combined. His take on the attributes of God is extremely insightful. It is practical enough for devotion material, yet intellectual enough for academic contemplation. It's also incredibly challenging upfront, properly setting the reader in the right humble frame of mind for entering the journey of conceptualizing AWESOME GOD! This should be required reading for the Church universal.

This is one of those books that every Christian should read. I love that it's not written in theological terminology that would be difficult for normal every-day-Christians to understand; rather, it's written in layman's terms and the concepts are very easy to grasp. Tozer does such a fantastic job of highlighting God's many attributes without reducing God to mere mortal understanding. It's a quick read with short chapters so you'll breeze through it quickly, but don't take it's small size for granted! This book is power-packed and life-changing. If you have never read The Knowledge of the Holy, please consider picking up a copy. I promise you that your relationship with and love for the Lord will only grow with the turn of each page.

If you ever feel overwhelmed by the weight of your problems, read this book. It explores the attributes of God. This book is so profound that I sometimes read only a paragraph and spend the day pondering it. I try to read it every few years.

I’ve been saved for quite some time but this book makes you question everything you thought you knew about God, but in a good way.Tozer effortlessly explores attributes about God that will leave you in awe of how incomprehensible our Beloved Father actually is. It’s been a long time since my reverence for God has been stirred this magnificently. I’ve read it several times and am currently using it as a morning devotional.

I liked the book when the author described God as best as he could describe Him which was pretty good. But every other paragraph it seemed the author was comparing our facilities for characteristics not comparable to God's which any born-again Christian already realizes. To have to read about our fallen state every other paragraph instead of about God I felt was a minor let down... However, the attempts to describe God were great in their wordiness and attempt at unlimited scope to describe the attributes of our wonderful, majestic, awesome God. I will definitely continue to read A W Tozer's books!

It was hard to relate to the author and stomach her ego. She seems to me to be very selfish and self-centered. Interestingly, I tried to find her on the internet - no such luck. Where is she now, 12 years after the book was written? Two of the doctors she raves about - Dr Jonathan Wright and Dr Bradley Weeks - have both recently lost their medical licenses within the state of Washington. I could not relate to her lifestyle - she mentions her chef and her "staff" at home on the ranch in Santa Barbara. Fortunately for her, she appears to have access to all the time and money in the world to seek various treatments and tests. BioCybernetics is another company she highly recommends but I could not find on the internet. I think the basic premise of the book might be worthwhile - to determine what your nutritional deficiencies are, assess your toxic load - basically stop doing what's hurting you, and start providing your body with what it needs to repair/recover in order to at least give your body a fighting chance to make a dent in your MS symptoms. But are her recommendations realistic? Well, they certainly are costly. There are many other books out there that provide better information and are presented in a much more palatable, reliable fashion. I couldn't finish this book because of all of her grandiose comments about herself. I can't have a whole lot of respect for someone who chose to leave her little daughter (grade school age) in New York with her ex-husband so that she could follow her rich boyfriend to Santa Barbara and live on his ranch, complete with chef and "staff" (including a driver). Really.

as a professor of neuropsychiatry AND someone who suffers from MS, i found this book to be okay. it discusses some of the alternative methods for the treatment of MS that have been used and are presently in use. she offers some evidence, both objective and subjective, in support of her claims. the writing is relatively easy to follow. She uses fairly short sentences. It pulls the reader in at times, but, with equal energy, it pushes or repulses you away. i was quite disappointed overall with the book, hoping that it would be both more descriptive and scholarly. i would not recommend this book for use in the classroom, for "primary care providers", or for those with MS.

This book is mostly a long-winded autobiography of Celeste Pepe. She constantly reminds the reader that she is rich, a nutritionist (who,incidentally, was "out of balance"), and married to a very wealthy, handsome man, who was in complete denial and not much help to her. It appears she believes she was re-incarnated and chose to have MS in a previous life so that she could save the rest of the world with vitamins, bee-stings and oxygen blown through every bodily opening! How is that even accomplished? As a person with recently diagnosed MS, this book was not in the least bit helpful. No one should take any advice from her at all and I don't think going to her as a chiroprator would be such a great idea either.

VERY informative. If you or a loved one has MS; this is a must read.

Honestly, I didn't get very far into this book before I began to realize that this woman was an imposter. She claims that she used many different methods (diet, yoga/exercise, and Bee Sting Therapy) to completely recover from MS......until you learn that she has only had MS for 5 years, and only the initial attack. Most of us who have MS can say that we recovered completely from our first attack, followed by a period of time (sometimes years) where we were free of the disease. Let's see if she can remain symptom-free for 10 or 15 or 20 years.

I’m in the process of planning a 10-week journey through Europe and the whole process has been a little overwhelming. That’s why I’m so happy I found this book. It has alleviated so much of my stress and it has made the whole planning process enjoyable.This book covers pretty much everything you need to know about planning a trip to Europe — hostels, using the trains/rail passes, budget airlines, solo travel, itinerary tips, packing lists, rental apartments, travel strategies, eating on the cheap, and a lot more.The book is written for people wanting to travel on a budget so there is a lot of advice about saving money. But the advice isn’t exclusively focused on doing everything as cheaply as possible; it also talks about getting the maximum value for the money you spend (your time is more valuable than money).This book is great for budget-minded travelers in their 20s/30s but the advice is good for travelers of all ages. If you’ve already traveled to Europe a few times then you might already be familiar with a lot of the information in the book, but for new travelers the tips in this book will save you a lot of time and money. I highly recommend it.One final note: This book doesn’t contain information about specific destinations (i.e. it won’t tell you what to see/do/eat in London). It focuses on travel skills and planning advice. For destination specific advice I recommend looking at guidebooks like Lonely Planet or Rick Steves.

I love this book!! I decided that I was going to backpack Europe solo next summer and began reading up on it online. I found a website called [...] and this book was recommended there.I've read it once and plan to reread it so I can ensure I soak up as much of his tips and tricks as I can. He gives very well rounded advice about each subject he touches on. Whether it's where/when to buy plane tickets, advice on where you should stay (hostel/hotel/couch surfing/etc.), or even what type of clothing to invest in and pack. He has a lot of really amazing helpful information and he provides you plenty of websites and books so that you can refer to all of them and make the best decision for you and your trip. I loved it!!

It's now a couple years old. Also, there are some grammatical and spelling errors. But overall the Savvy Backpacker (including the website too) is an excellent resource. Only reason I'm not rating 5 stars is that this information is available scattered on the website for free. It's still relatively cheap for a good combination of what the author has on his website. That aside, nobody else has put together a list of European specific backpacking travel advise. I plan to do a grand tour style trip after I graduate in either the Fall or Spring term.

I misunderstood, thought this book was about places to visit in Europe on a Budget. It's not. Has no geographical or political info, only information like "what to pack and how to be careful." I was very disappointed. Guess I trusted the title and made the mistake of not reading the description well.

Its a good book to get started, but its a little basic in its ideas, mostly covering obvious travel tips like "if you want to save money dont stay in an expensive hotel."

I bought this because my daughter is going to travel Europe and plans to spend as little money as possible. It had good travel advice and I highlighted a bunch of information for her before giving her book.

As an avid traveler, I really enjoyed this book. A friend recommended it because he knew I enjoyed traveling. As an older traveler, I’m not really on a budget, but I like to save money. So many good tips on so many different aspects of travel, for young and old alike.

I bought a couple of books for my college student. He will be studying and traveling abroad this fall. This is a quick read with lots & lots of great information & tips.

I expected more "basic" recipes in this book - the advertisement seemed like I would get a lot of basic dishes (mashed potatoes, roasted chicken, etc) but there are very few of those, there are more odd recipes that I would never even consider making. For example, a dish topped with "anchovy crumbles."

A wonderful down to earth cookbook. I bought the kindle version but wish I bought book version. It's actually a cookbook that I use. It has easy to follow recipes using ingredients that I have in my kitchen. The cookbook is also helpful to me when I'm in a hurry and can't think of what I want to cook. I look through the book and can always come up with something delicious.

I love this book. It’s homey & family oriented without slipping into canned soup and tater tot territory. There also are some company suitable recipes here. We love Dad’s Spaghetti Sauce and the Banana Coconut Pineapple Bread is quite possibly the best I’ve ever eaten.

Excellent book. The recipes are easy and fast.The books inspires you to create your favorite food with better ingredients. I really love this book. And love that every recipe have a little story attached.

This is the perfect cookbook! The ingredients are sensible and the instructions straight forward. I'm not a master chef, but I enjoy cooking real food and this book has amazing, simple, delicious recipes that even I can follow.

Reasonable recipes. I like cookbooks that have pictures for all recipes. This one does not.

I love this cookbook. It is real, down home cooking. No fancy stuff just the good stuff. I can truly appreciate everything this book has to offer.
