Any version of this book is great--it has evolved as the field of linguistics has evolved, and since this is an older version, is more affordable than the most recent edition--I use this in my undergraduate and graduate classes alike--best general introduction to the various sub disciplines of linguistics, such as morphology, syntax, phonology, phonetics, and so forth, that there is available today. Perhaps a bit too much on sign language, depending on the volume, and a somewhat outdated (even the newest version) and chaotic view of syntax, it still is the benchmark upon which similar books are based. I have used the 4th, 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th editions over the years, and though I have constantly looked for others, tried some here and there, this is still the one I return to for my basic text in my introductory linguistics courses.

This is a good textbook, as textbooks go. The exercises look especially valuable, although I haven't done them yet (I'm pre-reading this for a class I will be taking).The explanations could be better in many cases. It takes a special skill and perspective to write to people who don't already have a deep understanding of your subject. The writers of this textbook have somewhat failed to do this. So along with this book, I am reading The Study of Language, which I find to be a simpler, more clear presentation of the topic.

This is a very good introduction to theoretical linguistics and its subdisciplines. Some of the concept are somewhat difficult, but it's nothing that a good re-read can't fix. It covers all the components that make up linguistics i.e. phonology, syntax, etc. but it also adds some cool chapters on language and the brain, language change, and psycholinguistics which are all plusses in my book. This textbook provides good cartoons to illustrate some key points,the exercises are good for beginner's (perhaps some too easy) and the authors provide some really good suggested readings although some might the suggestions insanely difficult to read even after reading this book (for example, after reading the chapter on syntax, it suggests you read Chomsky's minimalist program. If this is the student's first introduction to syntax, then I really doubt they could tackle that book). All in all, I think its a perfect book to use in an introductory language class. The only problem I have with this book is its price. Way too expensive!!!

I used this text for an Introduction to Linguistics course, and found it very informative and entertaining. Although the text often mentions how its content would benefit ESL teachers, I feel that anyone interested in studying languages and/or interested in analyzing the various components of a language (for example morphology, syntax, grammatical elements, etc.) would find this text a fascinating read.The book is divided into logical and digestible chapters to give the student a concrete, general overview of what language is and the various theories pertinent to the study of it. The included exercises were relevant and helpful, encouraging the student to apply and practice what was covered and encouraging thoughtful discussion in the classroom. I also enjoyed the various drawings and humorous references in the book, that made the content enjoyable and easy to digest (who says learning has to be boring?). I still refer back to this book every so often simply because it is full of fascinating theories and concepts - highly recommended.

I started an MA program in Linguistics with a concentration in TESOL. The intro class required this text as its only text. The price on amazon.com was approx. $20 less than the bookstore/other store prices. It is a good value for the Amazon price.Aesthetics: It's a softcover book so it will get wrinkled at some point. There are cartoons in the chapters that break up the text and illustrate some go points.Info: The information is in an easy to comprehend format that is organized well. As you move on past morphology into syntax, the the info becomes more technical and complex. I suggest taking notes as you go so you can process the info better. The info is presented in a way that is as clear cut as they can get. My one gripe is that they constantly reference later chapters for info they bring up earlier.Overall: If you need to get this for a linguistics course or as a supplement, it's a good deal. If you are just dabbling, beware that the book gets technical and slightly confusing at chapter 3 or 4.

It deftly avoids the overly pedantic tone of most books on linguistics (such as _Women, Fire, and Dangerous Things_) with a casual yet scholarly touch, along with a sprinkling of humor than never descends into the sophomoric. A selection of appropriate cartoons adds a nice touch as well.This review refers to the seventh edition.

There are many parts of language that can be confusing, but this author explains language elements in easy to understand writing. I would not recommend this book for the lay person; however, it is a great resource for those who are interested in the make up of languages.

Glenn Miller's trip is a daring but calculated proposition: to go to Kathmandu, accompanied by his wife, Graz, and grown children, Andrew and Megan, trek through Nepal with an English-speaking guide and two porters. Initially, Glenn seems the most enthusiastic. This is a high-stakes reunion with neither fast-food restaurants nor fluffy hotel-guaranteed futons. Given his literary and romantic-adventurer disposition, considerable hiking experience, as well as intense commitment to the project, it makes sense that he would invest a great deal in pleasing everyone. All members of the party are seasoned world travellers; his son is a professional photographer who supplies many of the photographs in the book. Those are the moments to remember."The miracle of the thing is that on many levels as the trek progresses the plan actually seems to work, even if the only person who seems to be smiling in the pictures at times is their intrepid daughter Megan. It is November, not April, and this is not the Canterbury Tales; these pilgrims are in contemporary Nepal, which is barely nibbling at the edges of modernity, and headed for 16,230 feet. That everyone mostly manages to do what they set out to do is a tribute to the Miller family's emotional mortar that shores up chinks along the way as well as the excellence of Dorjee, their guide, and the two compassionate porters. The Millers are tough travellers and very real. They aren't afraid to tackle life without handrails. We hear it as it happened, in intimate, gritty detail that is strangely comforting and endearing. To usurp a couple of lines from his poem that appears at the front of the book I can only imagine as The Diarist and his family "(you) disappear into the strangeness/into the flicker of a silent movie/that keeps unreeling..."I can't wait to be a fly on the backpack of The Diarist's next trip and I hope another book is soon forthcoming. Next time, I am setting up comfortably in my armchair with my provisions so that I can match every step and savour every moment.

Wonderful book!

I found this to be an excellent book to learn about the history of Egmont Key with much of the information the authors obtained from a woman who grew up on Egmont and knew exactly what had occurred over the years. The authors also obviously did much research into the very early years, 1800's, to provide information for the reader.I first saw Egmont in the mid 50's as a boy while fishing with my dad during a family vacation, after having moved to the area in the late 50's it was not until the late 70's that I discovered what I had seen as a child. Over the years I became interested in the history of the area I lived and Egmont was high on the list of curious places. Well now thanks to Donald and Carol Thompson the authors my curiosity has been mostly satisfied I now need only to go there and walk around.Excellent book if you to, are curious.

Given as a gift to my better half history buff. Really enjoy the history!

I am a fan of Sarah Vowell's, owning most if not all of her books. She is extremely knowledgeable but I must say her sardonic writing gets tiring after a while. Not everything about the American Revolution, George Washington, and one of his favorite "sons" Lafayette, is funny. It just isn't. And while we do need to lighten up and understand the quirky nature of history in general and American history in particular, Vowell's voice in this book simply gets tiring. I am not impressed with this one, although I do admire Vowell's brilliance and ability as a writer. Just hope she expands her horizons with her next effort. If she focuses on something like the American Civil War and tells us about it the same manner she does with this one, I'm going to return the book. Vowell needs to expand the way she tells her stories beyond being cynical or sardonic.

I'd heard about Sarah Vowell, but I was never interested in reading any of her books until I heard her being interviewed about this one. Something about what she said intrigued me, so I got it. It won't be the last book of hers that I read -- in fact, I've got another one on order already. She reminds me of Bill Bryson, though I've only read one of his books, in that she provides lots of history combined with contemporary wit and humor and a sense of the uncanny connections between historical events separated by generations. For example, she discusses a connection between the story of Lafayette and Herman Melville that I found intriguing, but there are quite a few other examples. She also makes some American icons (and their British counterparts) come alive in ways that traditional (i.e., often bland) history does not.I have only one criticism of the book, really: the story of Lafayette recedes in the background (sometimes out of the picture entirely) in favor of her retelling of key episodes in the Revolutionary War; I didn't really expect a history of the War and was disappointed that Lafayette vanishes at times. However, she does a very good job in describing the weird coincidences and serendipity that resulted in the defeat of the British.I also have a second complaint, but not against Ms. Vowell (well, not really). There was one instance where she talks about a solider named Stephen in one place and a few pages later he becomes Stephens (or maybe it was Steven and Stevens; I can't recall). As I often ask, where were the editors? If I caught this on a casual read, why didn't someone else catch it? Maybe having to do an index would have helped.

Sarah Vowell’s acerbic, insightful wit comes through loud and clear in this fascinating account of French General Lafayette and his role in the American Revolution, but it took me a while to adjust to her irreverent banter in print--as well as being an author Vowell is also known for her radio pieces on This American Life. This book runs almost 270 pages without any chapter breaks, and reads like the long-winded but mesmerizing stand-up routine of a highly knowledgeable, history obsessed comedian who knows how to use humor to make a point.Lafayette was still a teenager when he left his young bride behind and snuck out of France to join the American Revolution against the wishes of his family, but he ended up becoming such a key figure in the winning of the war that cities all over the country are named for him. Vowell has a special knack for revealing the personalities of the many historical figures she writes about, their foibles, revealing quirks, and strengths. Since Lafayette had a close relationship with George Washington he features prominently in the book and I really appreciated getting a clearer picture of the man behind the myth. Vowell even manages to make battles and military strategy interesting, in part by keeping her focus on the people involved, and in part by not overlooking the missteps or ironies of the situations.Vowell finds plenty of opportunities to relate the struggles of the Revolutionary period to American politics today, pointing out that many current ideological divisions and tendencies have an origin, or at least an analog, dating back to the founding of the country. The book also covers the aftereffects of the Revolutionary War in France and Britain, and the America of 1824, which was when John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson competed in a notorious presidential election and the then elderly Lafayette made a return trip to the country that was still so besotted with him that two thirds of the population of New York City welcomed him ashore. While researching the book Vowell visited historic sites in America and France and she takes readers along on those trips too, giving us her impressions of tourist destinations like Williamsburg and Valley Forge while relating what happened there in the past.In this book Vowell manages the neat trick of being both funny and stirring. She clearly loves history, and she makes it very easy to join her in that passion.

It scared the heck out of me when I read it. Considered the Book of Enoch is not included within the Holy Bible I am not sure it is completely accurate.The Secrets of the Book of Enoch says that the souls of animals will accuse a man on the judgment day if he had treated that animal badly.

A fascinating yet frightening look behind the scenes in heaven, it is a book handed down to Methusaleh by his father Enoch before the Flood and yes, angels could write and yes, Enoch was a scribe. It's intention is to be a warning to generations to come. It explains judgement on various generations and the form thereof as well as God's intolerance to sin and disobedience which started with the fall of Angels and their destiny. It explains situations we, as Christians, often ponder on. Here we find a lot of answers, and it is a shame that this book is not better known or read by God fearing Christians. I highly recommend it, very appropriate for these last days.

This book helped me to understand parts of the Bible that were sometimes unclear, and for me it brought a whole knew understanding to what was happening in the Old Testament and brought the New testament up to modern times and what is going on in the world today, but mostly it helped me to understand why there is so much hatred for GOD, Israel and America at this time.

This book isn't for everyone. It's for those seekers who know that there is more to the Bible than what is being taught. But if you're the kind of person who holds on to every word your pastor says as if it's law, then this book isn't for you.

This was one of the best books I have ever read! The book of Enoch was once loved and considered just as valid as any other book of the Bible. The era in which Enoch was given is the origin of many quotes given by the prophets, by Y'shua and his apostles as well that are found throughout scripture. It gives full explanation of the 'giants' (only slightly mentioned in Genesis and the origin of evil spirits, and further gives the history of fallen angels. The book of Enoch, the earliest in ancient times, yields more prophecy of any other book and takes you on a ride from his day, through the flood, to the Messiah and onward to the end of days...all in one book. And why was it taken out of circulation?...because when it was discovered it transgressed the doctrines of Jew and Gentile alike.

This appears to be a print on demand copy of the book on Enoch because the date of publish was about 3 days before I received it in the mail. There is no commentary. The book is littered with typos, missing or incorrect words and is horribly formatted with pages containing widows and orphans and verse numbers floating in the middle of paragraphs. Sentences end without periods, then continue on the next line... what a mess.The cover has a nice soft touch velvet feel, but the cover text looks like it was output on a dot matrix printer back in 1989.Pretty disappointed with this copy and I'm only keeping it because I intend to highlight and write notes all over it, so I really don't care that much about appearances.

I've read this book twice online but wanted one I could have in my hands. The cover is amazing; it's almost like suede leather and gives that antique look which is so appropriate. No serious Bible student should be without this amazing book. I've found literally dozens of verses that are directly quoted in new testament, not just the obvious two.

The Ancient of Days has fashioned a well-orchestrated creation. Everything from humans to angles to luminaries to animals have a purpose, a calling. But some in the creation choose not to prescribe to their appointed roles.Enoch is blessed and given beforehand knowledge of God’s plan for the redemption of His sheep and the punishment of the rebellious.This book is not an easy read. I searched outside sources to help me understand what was being described in some of the visions given. Words in some sections of the book have double meanings.

Over the years I've tried really hard to get this to work, but for me the idea of a divine hand reaching down from the clouds and plucking out the bad bits just worked less and less. In The Little Book I find, as just some examples that appeal to me personally, "Work honestly, humbly and courageously to develop our assets and to release our personal shortcomings." In another set of Steps there is "Humbly began the process of deep change, so we could overcome our weakness." Any yet again, "With the assistance of others, and our own firm resolve, we transformed unskillful aspects of ourselves and cultivated positive ones." Now these are translations of the original intent that I can get a grip on.I mention Step 7 because it is a hot button for me; it was depressing me. With these ideas I can get it restarted and find new ways to tackle the job. Just like that first cut I made with a Japanese saw. But all the Steps are here in the book, with the same wide range of interpretations.Roger includes interpretations of each step by four well qualified and thoughtful authors, which gives a nice background and idea-starters for all the newer variations. There is also an excellent essay on where the Steps came from in the first place--from the cultural and religious background of Bill W. and the original AAs through to the arguments that took place over their final form, the place of God in them, and what this means for agnostics and atheists.I found this little book useful, refreshing and enlightening. I really recommend it for anyone wanting a new view of the Steps - especially to any agnostic, who, like me, just can't see the point of getting sore knees over it.

For those of us in A.A. who struggle with "God" in the Twelve Steps, this book is a great little read and gave me some ideas for alternative 12 steps. I created my own 12 step list, pulling from a few different lists in the book, leaving out "God" and "Higher Power" and "Spirituality", etc... I mostly use the list from the Agnostic groups, although I am an atheist. Reading the variety of 12 steps that this book provides helped me gain a better understanding of my own viewpoints with respect to the original 12 steps. I've lent the book to several other atheist friends in A.A., and we have all found some use out of this book.

This book and its author have been inspirational for those looking for more personalized 12 steps. The commonalities among these steps from many different recovery programs show the continued relevance of "the Steps" today.The steps were meant to be suggestions only. This book has many other suggestions with the same import as the originals, but having more currency now. Six of the 12 steps in the "Big Book" mentioned a theistic higher power that seems out of date now. Recovery does not need any specific belief system to work. Recovery simply needs belief in yourself and working with others.The "Little Book" has become a staple in my home group's literature.

If you need help with drinking, but don't need or want the "god" part of AA, this is a wonderful little book. There are many ways to reach and sustain sobriety, and this book gives many alternatives.

Everyone in the recovery community of Alcoholics Anonymous should read this book. The alternative versions of the 12 Steps and interpretations are very enlightening. For the the person struggling with the "religious" emphasis of the 12 Steps, it lets you know that you are not alone and that you can still benefit greatly from the personal transformation that the Steps offer.

We use this book in one of our meetings and it is interesting to have the different alternative 12 steps.

Of the seven or eight other introductory texts I have read on process theology, this one by Bruce Epperly is perhaps the best overall, even though it does not replace the others. This is a strong claim to make for someone who appreciates the works of John Cobb and Marjorie Suchocki, both of whom have written many classic books on process theology. But one of the great strengths of Epperly's introductory level book is in his synthesis of many of the most important ideas of other leading Christian process-relational thinkers from the last few decades, including Cobb and Suchocki, but also David Ray Griffin, Charles Hartshorne, Catherine Keller, Bernard Loomer, Thomas Jay Oord, Robert Mesle, Lewis Ford, Jay McDaniel, Monica Coleman, and last but definitely not least, Bruce Epperly himself. Additionally, he quotes widely from the complex works of Alfred North Whitehead throughout the book, highlighting some of his most memorable passages and explaining them in a way that makes them more accessible. A second strength of this book is due to Epperly's emphasis in practical theology. He is concerned, first and foremost, with the way in which process theology works within the lives of individuals and communities, impacting churches and preaching. This adds up to a real gift in clear communication, but also great sensitivity to the actual lives of people outside the academy, leading him to concentrate less on complicated academic debates and more on issues like prayer, life after death, ethics, and holistic healing practices.Here are a few things that stood out to me about the book:1) Epperly goes through every important area of Christian theology and explains the various ways that process theologians understand them - christology, soteriology, sin, anthropology, eschatology, ecclesiology, pneumatology, and the trinity. This is pretty much standard for process theology intro books, but Epperly is particularly clear and thorough in his explanations of the various process interpretations of systematic theology. Beyond the basic areas of systematic theology, Epperly also explains process views of miracles, scripture, revelation, and mystical experiences.2) A very helpful overview of process ethics is included on issues like abortion, euthanasia, ecology/animal rights, and economics/justice (which draws heavily on Cobb's work). Such a wide variety of important issues are not always a part of other introductory level process texts, so this was a great addition to the book.3) As previously mentioned, Epperly synthesizes other key process thinkers in this book and summarizes many of their most important contributions to the process theology conversation: Cobb's logos/Wisdom Christology and work in ethics; Suchocki's theologies of original sin, eschatology, and prayer; Epperly's own work in holistic healing practices and eschatology; Griffin's work in the area of theodicy; Oord's work on a theology of love; Coleman's Womanist theology; McDaniel's work in ecology; etc.4) Lastly, in the final chapter of the book, Epperly considers the possibility of the "amorphous, yet dynamic" emergent church movement adopting a process theology framework. He argues that process theology provides the flexibility that the emergent church is committed to while avoiding relativism, purely apophatic spirituality, and deconstructive postmodernism (most forms of process theology are contrasted as 'constructive postmodernism'). It encourages as much openness to other religions as possible while remaining rooted in a (constantly evolving) tradition - a kind of 'confessional religious pluralism.' Indeed, citing Brian McLaren, Epperly believes process theology can provide a truly inspiring philosophical and theological grounding for a "New Kind of Christianity." Although only a few self-identified emergent Christian writers/leaders/pastors are explicitly aligned with some form of process theology at this point, there are certainly overlapping emphases with process in many emergent/emerging books and blogs. As such, Epperly's invitation to emergent Christians (who are largely post-evangelicals) to consider process theology as a viable option in their search for new forms of faith makes a great deal of sense for anyone familiar with McLaren or Doug Pagitt.While process theology is anything but easy to understand for many beginners, Bruce Epperly has done a fantastic job of making it accessible without oversimplifying the incredible depth of process thinking.

In Process Theology: A Guide for the Perplexed, Bruce Epperly has accomplished the near impossible: making process theology accessible, clear, and fully alive to people of faith and spiritual sensitivity. Comprehensive in scope and vividly fresh in presentation, this book brings the transforming power of process theology to life.Near the beginning of the book he asks the reader some telling questions: "Do our images of God encourage creativity or destruction? Do they inspire love or hatred? Are they defined primarily by loving partnership or by coercive power?" Author is not well known in this theological community but the book is well written.

I was hoping for an explanation of process theology for dummies. The basic concept I get; I get way too lost in the details, though. If you're not philosophically minded but want to understand process theology as a layman then I suggest you keep on looking.

I guess what I was looking for was a way to incorporate my former evangelical beliefs into a world view that kept what I consider important aspects of the divine, one of them being the personal nature of God. However, Epperly refrains from using pronouns when talking about God which is some ways is not only distracting (God takes God's time to do what God wants) but also makes God into something that we cannot define in a personal way. He is no longer he and is not she or they or it, but an entity without pronouns therefore without personality. I'm sure Epperly's description of Process Theology will be helpful to some, but I will take Process Theology off my list of theologies to explore.

Before I purchased this book I struggled in my Graduate level theology classes. After a few frustrating attempts at writing a paper that included Whiteheadian theory and others, I downloaded this book (Kindle) on Process Theology and knocked out an "A" paper. I plan to buy others from the "Guides for the Perplexed" series.
