The Stranger, by Chris Van Allsburg

From Publishers Weekly

Farmer Bailey thinks he's hit a deer while driving his truck, but in the middle of the road lies a man, an enigmatic stranger. He goes home with Farmer Bailey, his memory apparently gone. Weeks pass at the Bailey farm; the stranger seems happy to be around them, and helps with the harvest. Oddly, while trees to the north of the farm turn red and gold with the arrival of fall, Bailey's land seems to be in a state of perpetual summer. One day, the stranger sees geese flying south and knows that he, too, must leave. Not long after that, the leaves at the farm change color and the air turns cool. And every year since, summer lasts a week longer at the Bailey farm than anywhere else. Van Allsburg's story is strangely melancholy, and his straightforward writng is uncannily dry, in contrast to the vivid green and golden landscapes of his paintings. The mood and suspense in this book make it compellinga chance to see the artist take a slight incident and create a truly mysterious event. (All agesCopyright 1986 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Chris Van Allsburg is my favorite children's author/illustrator and "The Stranger" is one of his best. I own at least one copy of each of his books. This one was purchased for a gift but the moment I opened it and saw the illustrations I knew something was not right. The illustrations were not as vivid as those in older editions. Upon checking the publishing information I saw that it was printed in China. Big disappointment. If you have not read this book please do purchase a copy but be sure it is printed in the U.S. If Van Allsburg's illustrations were not equally as fabulous as his stories it would not be a big deal. However a two-time Caldecot winner's books should be top quality in every way.I am returning this copy.

I read this story for the first time a few weeks ago. The book is so interesting - I thought that the ending might be different depending what is inferred from the story. So I asked my 15 and 17 year old to read it, and my husband. Each took something different from the story and made their own inferences. Since then I have read it to a class made up of 3,4, and 5th graders they all loved it and all made their own conclusion as to who the stranger is...

We love this book. Like all Van Allsburg books, it is beautifully illustrated and captivates the imagination. It might seem kind of spooky and mysterious to some, but we like a bit of that. We first read it several years ago and had fun discussing who exactly we thought the stranger really was and why. Now we pick it up as one of those familiar favorites. "The Stranger" is welcome in our home.

I was using a unit on Chris Van Allsburg books to teach my Learning Disabled middle schoolers about Inferring, a skill that's really tough to master for those with language processing deficits.I'd not read this particular book, though I love the artwork and simple text of other books of his; this is a dandy. Mysterious and moody, there are opportunities in layers on each page to infer meaning. If you just want to curl up with a kid for a few special moments (as I did with my young grandson), this is a perfect vehicle to find out how a little dude sees the world and makes his own meaning.

This is a book about a mysterious stranger whom a farmer accidentally hits with his truck one day. The stranger cannot talk, but there is definitely more to him than meets the eye. The farm where he stays experiences summer one week longer than anywhere else. It is definitely a fun read.

Chris Van Allsburg is one of my favorite authors for children's books and The Stranger is a classic in the Autumn season. The book worth in good condition and is well made.

My kids, 7yos, were totally captivated by the pictures and kept asking questions throughout the story. They couldn't guess the ending or figure it all out until the end, and still at the end it kept them thinking! We read this after The Fig story by the same author that they just adore! Beautiful pictures.

One of his first books I found, amazing art work and a rather exciting story of the old world
