I pre-ordered a copy, and got it a couple days ago. I LOVE it!!! It is different from other herb books I own in the way it explains about the energetics of the herbs and how to match appropriately to the individual (not just a "take this herb for this illness"). Energetics is actually my goal to learn and utilize this year!
Containing over 220 pages of information, this book is that you will likely want to reference many, many times. In fact, mine is already highlighted so I can quickly find the pertinent information I don't want to forget! This book is broken down into two parts with essentially four sections:What are healing herbs? * How to use medicinal herbs * Selecting the best herbs for you * The 30 Essential HerbsThank goodness herbs are no longer thought of in the same way as snake oil! Yes, the author remembers when this was true! I LOVE that herbs "can help us avoid unnecessary, expensive medical appointments and treatments". The reader is encouraged to purchase organic herbs if not planting/picking their own. The idea of using herbs is to bring balance back into your body. For e.g. If you are hot, use cooling herbs, Learn the energetics of both herbs and illnesses in this book. The 30 Essential Herbs section presents the herbs in alphabetical order so easy to find the one you want. A picture of the herb is shown at the beginning of its sections. With each herb comes "An About" page, home treatments and recipes. IMPORTANT TO NOTE that this is not a cookbook as such. Yes, you will find the occasional recipe that you can eat like hot sauce and granola bars but the recipes in this book are more teas, tinctures, salves etc. I have to admit I was a little confused on one ingredient in the recipe "Immunitea". It calls for one cup of elderberry and then says in the instructions to grind all the ingredients so it is obviously not the berries that need to be used. Is it the leaves? Flowers? The Elder Syrup recipe is high in sugar. I prefer to use raw honey in my recipe, adding it at the end to preserve its properties. Also as our kids LOVE this I do not add any alcohol to preserve it as I continue to make fresh throughout the winter when needed. Some of the recipes do have alcohol in them so I would caution against making those for your children unless you have complete control over how much they drink.Which herbs together are thought to promote hair growth? Fancy a Blue Oat Smoothie? At the end of the book you will find an extensive glossary, resources, a remedy index, ailment index and index. There is an error in the 'Ailment Index'. The large alphabetical letters defining each section go as follows:A, B, C, E, B, F, G, H etc. Oops! No biggie as it is obvious and will not prevent you finding what you need.I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher. That has not influenced my review with the thoughts and opinions above being my own. Thanks, Liz
I have known the author for many years and have enjoyed her publications as well as her whole attitude toward such a wonderful topic. You cannot help but be drawn in to want to visit her own home when you read about what she is able to harvest on her land. There are lots of lovely pictures in the book which help with understanding what specific herbs look like. The contents cover 3 different categories:1 - What hare healing herbs?2 - How to use medicinal herbs.3 - Selecting the best herbs for you.The author lists what she feels are the 30 essential herbs for you to have, and they are all very good to keep on hand. She goes on to describe a bit about how herbs heal, the benefits of herbal medicine and how medicinal herbs are used, as well as where to get them, and other topics of interest. She describes various ways of using herbs; in teas, syrups, infusions in oils as well as cooking with them. One of the areas that she mentions is labeling. I cannot stress enough how important it is to keep good notes on what you are doing. If you don't, and you want to duplicate your recipe, you won't know how much to add of what types of things. Label properly and keep scrupulous notes. The types of herbs are discussed along with their energetic values and how these will best be used. Each of the 30 herbs has a color picture along with information about the herb; parts used, safety considerations, Energetics, Properties, External Uses, Preparation types, Dosages, and Growing tips. There are recipes as well for each herb. The Latin name is also used which is what most herbalist recognize and use to assure the correct species of plant. There is a glossary in the back for anyone who is not familiar with some of the words used in the book. There are also resources, ailment and remedy pages as well as a general index in the back of the book.Having been an avid and passionate herbalist for many years, this is another highly recommended book that I will add to my herbal library.I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for my unbiased review. I would highly recommend this book.
The author Tina Sams is the developer, editor and distributor of the magazine "The Essential Herbal" of which I have been a subscriber for over a decade. If you've read her first book, "Healing Herbs", this second tome is like an extension of the first, but not at all redundant. There are different herbs highlighted. She discusses the concept of energetics - why some herbs may work for you but not others depending on your personal consitution - in an easy way. I felt like she was chatting with me over a cup of tea, herbal of course! I especially appreciate the thought put into the format of the indexes; they are categorized by remedy AND by ailment. This makes it easier to locate what you're researching, depending on the information you already have. It doesn't do you much good to have a sore throat, but can't find an entry listing it. Who wants to read through every herb profile when their throat is on fire? Similarly, perhaps you have an abundance of yarrow this summer. What are all the different ways you could prepare it for use? She's my favorite herb education author because her writing is inviting and welcoming to people of all different backgrounds. Her approach is especially for those who are beginning to get their hands dirty and don't have a PhD in horticulture or medicine.
