What was the Pulitzer group thinking?!? Based on the Pulitzer designation and based on some of the endorsements from favorite writers (Ann Patchett), my book club chose "Less". All six of us (college educated women ages 35 to 71) disliked it. The criticisms were that the main character was uninteresting, unsympathetic and unrelatable; that the paltry humor was only mildly amusing (not "hysterical" as one endorsement said), the ending was predictable and anticlimactic; and that we finished reading it out of duty to the club, not because the book was compelling. In other words, we couldn't care less about "Less". The only redeeming aspect was the interesting way the author would weave past and present together in the narrative. I cannot recommend this book and the Pulitzer people need to reexamine their standards.

After I started reading Less I immediately thought “So, why did this win the Pulitzer?” Then, about half way through, I began to understand. By the time we get to Morocco with Arthur Less, I was mentally comparing Less to Lolita, though the characters are nothing alike. While you hate the protagonist Humbert in Lolita, there is no denying the power of the novel. And where you will love the protagonist Arthur Less, it is the writing that shines here, not the sweep of the story or the depth of the characters. Is there a literary genre called Profound Humorous Romps? That’s where this book belongs. This is not a “gay” book, but Arthur is gay. This is not a story about middle age, but Arthur is confronting his own aging. This is a story about how humans are constantly swimming upstream against life. This is a story about how humans are old or young or bald or sad or beautiful or boring and sometimes we are more, but sometimes we are…(wait for it)…Less. I just hope Arthur turns sixty really soon, and Andrew Greer brings us a new book so we can ride shotgun again with Less.

If you're looking for a book about a neurotic gay man to whom nothing really interesting happens, and who spends an inordinate amount of time lamenting the loss of a former partner, then you'll like LESS. But if you're looking for a book with interesting characters and an actual plot, look elsewhere.

I'm encouraged to see that I'm not the only one who thought this book wasn't so hot. After reading all the pages of raving blurbs, I thought I'd really be in for a treat. But I couldn't believe in it (and this is from another aging--okay, old--gay man). I spent so much energy slogging through the writer's attempts to be clever in every single sentence that I couldn't get involved with the character or story. I will admit that I laughed out loud a few times, and that's a lot more than I get out of the majority of books I read, but overall it was tedious, difficult reading. I was left wondering if "winner of the Pulitzer prize" was just part of the title--a bit of irony based on Less's older lover's having won the prize.

Arthur Less is hilariously well-named. In the opening salvo, he is waiting to be escorted to a literary event, sitting in a hotel lobby, while a woman he is meant to meet is circling the room looking for a woman, mistakenly thinking the author of the book she's read cannot be a man. On the eve of Arthur's fiftieth birthday, his partner of almost ten years has announced his upcoming nuptials, and in order to avoid this nightmare, Arthur has cobbled together a trip around the world accepting an odd congregation of invitations to host, attend, and teach various literary events. With each stop, he goes into his past, revealing more and more about himself and his history. Each experience generates memory, both poignant and absurd. Greer has a fine sense of character and irony, and this surpasses other books I've read by him.

“Strange to be almost fifty, no? I feel like I just understood how to be young.”Andrew Greer is a gifted writer and a skilled storyteller. I started reading this book with a good deal of cynical lip-curling over the precious fumbling of its title character, Arthur Less. My radar was attuned to every little bit of self-conscious “literariness,” that affectation of language through which an author separates him or herself from the herd of other writers. By the last page of the book, however, I was in tears. Somehow, Andrew Sean Greer’s feckless, nearly-fifty, aging-twink author protagonist began, against the odds, to resonate with me.I am fifteen years older than Andrew Greer, and a decade older than the fictional Arthur Less. Why does this matter? Because age is not just a number: age is your place in history, your worldview, your experience. As a sixty-something gay man, with a husband of forty-two years, the experience of my life gives me a point of view, for good or for ill. I have opinions, especially about other gay men, and particularly about gay men in the public spotlight. And there, you see, is part of the point. “Less” is a gay book by a gay author that won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 2018. This, in the same year that a gay journalist, Ronan Farrow (age 30), won a Pulitzer for his work. This is news. This matters, especially to a gay man of my generation for whom this all feels a bit miraculous, especially given the bizarro-world of our national political scene at the moment.Arthur Less is a writer, a novelist. He is approaching his fiftieth birthday, and has behind him two decade-long romances that both ended badly. Did they end badly because Less was an idiot? Possibly. When faced with the impending marriage of his second ex-boyfriend, Less does the only thing he can imagine to save himself: he flees. Accepting a half-dozen heretofore ignored invitations from various global destinations, he sets off, still fumbling and irritating, on a trip around the world that will help him avoid the wedding and his fiftieth birthday.Along the way we get most of Arthur’s life. We meet the “young Arthur Less,” pretty and feckless, talent untapped, as he bumbles into his first relationship. We follow him into early middle age, when one relationship is exchanged for another. At first, it’s not clear how important these two relationships are; but with time, it becomes clear that not only were they important, they were everything. It’s a little bit as if Arthur has been going through life not quite paying attention. He is often startled, often confused, often hurt. He is not hugely promiscuous, but he is not not promiscuous either. Arthur doesn’t seem to consider the potential significance of fidelity or monogamy. On the other hand, he’s not thinking about heteronormativity either. He doesn’t seem to give much thought to his romantic life, but just sort of takes it as it comes. It’s as if he can’t quite focus—on his writing career, on his emotional life, on the world around him.At one point, in yet another vaguely surreal moment on his world tour, Arthur is accused of being a “bad gay” by another gay author. He is told by that author (who is presented as supercilious and pretentious), that “It is our duty to show something beautiful from our world. The gay world. But in your books, you make the characters suffer without reward.”That moment struck me, because this very book, the book that won Greer his Pulitzer, is the first book by this gay author that includes the experience of a gay man; that includes any gay character, as far as I can tell. Greer is an author who, while his being gay is not a secret, never makes being gay a part of his public persona—at least in what I found. He is out, he has a husband, but I had to dig to find it. His other books, which include at least two best sellers, are devoid of any gay content. This book has, for the first time, made him a gay author. And even here, one of the reasons for this book’s success is that it is “A gay guy novel that even a non-gay guy can appreciate.” (Tony’s Book World)For a gay man of my generation and from my vantage point, this rankles. As a voracious reader, who gathered a big library of contemporary gay literature in the 1970s and 80s, I am leery of gay men who, in this day and age, don’t put gay content in their books. I know this is grossly unfair, because the prejudice in the publishing world (as in Hollywood and in virtually all the arts) is still very much present, no matter what anyone tells you. The world is better than when I was born, but it is not entirely good, not by a long shot, in the way it approaches gay content and treats gay artists. So, Greer’s first gay book, a book which surely has resonance with the artist’s own life (made doubly so by Arthur Less’s revision of his own latest unwanted novel in the course of this novel) wins him the brass ring, the Oscar of novelists. Is this ironic? Is this a message?“Boredom is the only real tragedy for a writer; everything else is material.”In the end, this book got five stars from me because it honored both the author’s experience as a gay man, and my experience as a survivor of gay life in a straight world. I expect no less from gay authors. None of the gay authors I read routinely will ever win a Pulitzer prize, and I’m fine with that. I’m glad that I ended up loving “Less,” because it is an important moment in the history of gay fiction. I hope the author cares about this as much as I do.

This book is all about learning by doing. You'll get instructions showing exactly how to build over a dozen rockets, launchers and trackers. Along the way, you will need some parts. As you buy the book, here are a few things to consider:Most of the solid-propellent rockets in the book can be build from parts in the Estes Designer Special. Amazon has a good price on this collection of parts. You can also buy individual parts from various model rocket suppliers. There are a few parts you will need for some of the later rockets that are not in the Estes Designer Special. You may want to wait to browse through the book before getting them, but if you're anxious to get started, hunt down the following parts. If you aren't sure what they are, wait a bit. The book will fill you in.1. One or two BT-60 to BT-70 balsa transitions. (One each for the egg lofter and a general purpose payload bay.)2. One or two BT-70 balsa nose cones. (One each for the egg lofter and a general purpose payload bay.)3. A BT-60 to BT-80 balsa transition and a BT-80 balsa nose cone for the camera payload.4. A small camera such as the Y-2000.5. Two extra BT-60 body tubes for payload boosters, a BT-70 body tube for the egg lofter and general purpose payload bay, and a BT-80 for the camera payload.6. Two extra BT-20 nose cones. I used blunt balsa ones for the glider and helicopter recovery rocket, but you can substitute. For the launcher, you will need a keyless drill chuck and a 1/2-20 thread and a 3" long 1/2-20 bolt, as well as a 12 volt cigarette lighter plug and socket for the 12 volt external power connection. (You can build the launchers without these parts, or even retro fit them later.)Most of these parts are available right here on Amazon. You might as well get that free shipping! All other parts are usually easy to find locally. One member of the local rocket club decided I wrote this book to have an excuse to build a lot of rockets, launchers and trackers. I asked him not to spill my secrets to my wife. I hope you'll keep it quiet too, and that you have as much fun building them as I did!

My goal is to build a scale model of a MIM-3 Nike Ajax Missile. This book provides the fundamental information I need. It’s a great technical resource.

This book is absolutely loaded with great experiments for the beginner or the professional. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I believe anyone that has an interest in rocketry will also thoroughly enjoy this book. I don't believe that anyone can go wrong purchasing this if you're interested in getting in to the rocketry hobby.

Move over G. Harry Stine and the 7 versions of The Handbook of Model Rocketry. Mike Westerfield has written the definitive book on 21st century model rocketry. This is from someone who flew his first Estes rocket in October 1967.

not what i though.

Nice reference manual for Model Rocketry.

Detailed instructions for building all kinds of model rockets and launch systems. The design for the launcher is worth the price of the book.

Hours of fun. buy the Estes designer special with the book it is a great start to model rocketry and designing your own rockets. Have fun!!!

Many rockets, but not user friendly

#26,136 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I pre-ordered a copy, and got it a couple days ago. I LOVE it!!! It is different from other herb books I own in the way it explains about the energetics of the herbs and how to match appropriately to the individual (not just a "take this herb for this illness"). Energetics is actually my goal to learn and utilize this year!

Containing over 220 pages of information, this book is that you will likely want to reference many, many times. In fact, mine is already highlighted so I can quickly find the pertinent information I don't want to forget! This book is broken down into two parts with essentially four sections:What are healing herbs? * How to use medicinal herbs * Selecting the best herbs for you * The 30 Essential HerbsThank goodness herbs are no longer thought of in the same way as snake oil! Yes, the author remembers when this was true! I LOVE that herbs "can help us avoid unnecessary, expensive medical appointments and treatments". The reader is encouraged to purchase organic herbs if not planting/picking their own. The idea of using herbs is to bring balance back into your body. For e.g. If you are hot, use cooling herbs, Learn the energetics of both herbs and illnesses in this book. The 30 Essential Herbs section presents the herbs in alphabetical order so easy to find the one you want. A picture of the herb is shown at the beginning of its sections. With each herb comes "An About" page, home treatments and recipes. IMPORTANT TO NOTE that this is not a cookbook as such. Yes, you will find the occasional recipe that you can eat like hot sauce and granola bars but the recipes in this book are more teas, tinctures, salves etc. I have to admit I was a little confused on one ingredient in the recipe "Immunitea". It calls for one cup of elderberry and then says in the instructions to grind all the ingredients so it is obviously not the berries that need to be used. Is it the leaves? Flowers? The Elder Syrup recipe is high in sugar. I prefer to use raw honey in my recipe, adding it at the end to preserve its properties. Also as our kids LOVE this I do not add any alcohol to preserve it as I continue to make fresh throughout the winter when needed. Some of the recipes do have alcohol in them so I would caution against making those for your children unless you have complete control over how much they drink.Which herbs together are thought to promote hair growth? Fancy a Blue Oat Smoothie? At the end of the book you will find an extensive glossary, resources, a remedy index, ailment index and index. There is an error in the 'Ailment Index'. The large alphabetical letters defining each section go as follows:A, B, C, E, B, F, G, H etc. Oops! No biggie as it is obvious and will not prevent you finding what you need.I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher. That has not influenced my review with the thoughts and opinions above being my own. Thanks, Liz

I have known the author for many years and have enjoyed her publications as well as her whole attitude toward such a wonderful topic. You cannot help but be drawn in to want to visit her own home when you read about what she is able to harvest on her land. There are lots of lovely pictures in the book which help with understanding what specific herbs look like. The contents cover 3 different categories:1 - What hare healing herbs?2 - How to use medicinal herbs.3 - Selecting the best herbs for you.The author lists what she feels are the 30 essential herbs for you to have, and they are all very good to keep on hand. She goes on to describe a bit about how herbs heal, the benefits of herbal medicine and how medicinal herbs are used, as well as where to get them, and other topics of interest. She describes various ways of using herbs; in teas, syrups, infusions in oils as well as cooking with them. One of the areas that she mentions is labeling. I cannot stress enough how important it is to keep good notes on what you are doing. If you don't, and you want to duplicate your recipe, you won't know how much to add of what types of things. Label properly and keep scrupulous notes. The types of herbs are discussed along with their energetic values and how these will best be used. Each of the 30 herbs has a color picture along with information about the herb; parts used, safety considerations, Energetics, Properties, External Uses, Preparation types, Dosages, and Growing tips. There are recipes as well for each herb. The Latin name is also used which is what most herbalist recognize and use to assure the correct species of plant. There is a glossary in the back for anyone who is not familiar with some of the words used in the book. There are also resources, ailment and remedy pages as well as a general index in the back of the book.Having been an avid and passionate herbalist for many years, this is another highly recommended book that I will add to my herbal library.I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for my unbiased review. I would highly recommend this book.

The author Tina Sams is the developer, editor and distributor of the magazine "The Essential Herbal" of which I have been a subscriber for over a decade. If you've read her first book, "Healing Herbs", this second tome is like an extension of the first, but not at all redundant. There are different herbs highlighted. She discusses the concept of energetics - why some herbs may work for you but not others depending on your personal consitution - in an easy way. I felt like she was chatting with me over a cup of tea, herbal of course! I especially appreciate the thought put into the format of the indexes; they are categorized by remedy AND by ailment. This makes it easier to locate what you're researching, depending on the information you already have. It doesn't do you much good to have a sore throat, but can't find an entry listing it. Who wants to read through every herb profile when their throat is on fire? Similarly, perhaps you have an abundance of yarrow this summer. What are all the different ways you could prepare it for use? She's my favorite herb education author because her writing is inviting and welcoming to people of all different backgrounds. Her approach is especially for those who are beginning to get their hands dirty and don't have a PhD in horticulture or medicine.

A really fun read, appropriate for all ages because I believe there is something in this book that will resonate with just about anyone. The author shares painful stories with wit and good humor. There were a number of laugh-out-loud moments for me. However, the lessons in the book are quite serious. It was a hard book to put down.

Good book. Great story! Fun to read. Insightful. Purchased it for my teen as required summer reading. Double bang for the buck as whether your a teen or beyond, it's a good read!

This book is marked as an "Amazon Best Seller!" It's the #1 best selling book on Amazon in its category, which is "Books > Teens > Personal Health > Physical Impairments." I don't know how many books there ARE in that category, but I'm guessing not a lot. And that really explains what I liked and didn't like about this book. This young man survived a horrifying bout of childhood cancer which resulted in one of his legs being amputated at the hip. As he explains, this is a severe physical impairment because no prosthetic device ever invented can replace the actions of three joints. Eventually the problem solved itself because his body rejected the prosthesis and he's now limited to crutches.I think the author intended his story to be both entertaining and educational and I think he succeeds. This book forces the reader to examine America's strange attitude toward the physically handicapped. On the one hand, we don't see being physically handicapped as a GOOD thing. We certainly wouldn't want to be physically handicapped ourselves or for any of our loved ones to be physically handicapped. On the other hand, we don't want to look shallow and unsympathetic. We compromise by elevating the handicapped to the status of semi-sainthood. A handicapped person is automatically a "hero" because he/she has a handicap and keeps going. (Like they have a choice?) We like to hear from the handicapped and we like to pat them on the back because it makes us feel good about ourselves. We love that we don't have to feel sorry for them because they're brave and unselfish and plucky and all the stuff that the rest of us aren't and don't want to be. Attending their motivational speeches and cheering loudly solves the problem of our ambivalent attitudes toward the "differently-abled." Then we can forget about them. We're off the hook. This intelligent, articulate young man keeps making the point that the loss of a limb doesn't really make you fundamentally any different from everyone else. And he's absolutely correct and his approach to women proves it. His love life (or lack of one) has little to do with his missing leg and everything to do with being raised by two loving, earnest, well-meaning people whose child-rearing methods left him ill-equipped to function in the modern world. In a culture where youngsters hook-up and hope that sex will lead to romance, he's feeling guilty for THINKING about kissing a girl. He's looking for a 1950's girl and he's 60 years too late. This book is quirky and some shy teens may relate to his stories of awkward attempts to find romance. Most of his stories are run-of-the-mill tales of growing up. However, the story about the time when the foot of his prosthesis turned backwards was unique. I have to admit, I never read anything quite like that one before. And he tells his stories very well. The take-away lesson is: Stop burdening this man by expecting him to be a super-hero. Stop gushing because he made a speech with jokes and he only has ONE LEG! Stop being amazed because he wrote a book and he only has ONE LEG! Do you see how silly you sound? He's a normal, shallow, self-centered young guy and he wants what every other normal, shallow, self-centered young guy wants - a babe. That's what he goes after and he's not settling for less. Hence his reaction to "Stella the Stalker."Finally a girl is interested in him. Maybe a bit TOO interested, but interested. And he tells her to get lost. He freely admits that Stella's sin is not that she's weird, but that she's ugly. If she had been one of the hot babes he covets, her stalking would have been delightful. Finally he meets a beauty queen who was also home-schooled and they walk off into the sunset. Stella wasn't his problem and I'm not unreasonable enough to think he could have made a huge difference in her life. He could have shown her some kindness, but maybe that's expecting too much of a young man. Anyway, he didn't.Just because something extraordinary (good or bad) has happened to you doesn't mean that you become an extraordinary person. You have to do that yourself. Maybe the author and his beauty queen girlfriend will marry. Maybe one of their children will be a Stella. Maybe loving an imperfect child and advocating for her and hurting when she hurts will turn him into the hero that his audiences want to believe he is now. This is a teen book and a teen would react to it far differently than I did. Still, I'm glad I read it. I didn't fall in love with the guy, but he made me think.

Self-deprecating and honest, yet giggle-out-loud (embarrassingly, at a coffee shop, in front of other people) funny, this is a very relatable book addressing the perils of dating. I highly recommend it.

I bought this book which was required reading for my 9th grade triplets and they all said it was a great book.

All men (and women) need to read this book! If you are struggling in the dating scene this book may be your source of a solution! Jonah holds the secret to your success!

A wonderful story with an interesting premise. Very funny as well. I recommend this book to all of my friends, especially the single ones.

This is a book for pure enjoyment. While it is set up as "research," these travels through Josh's romantic endeavors are humorous, comically tragic, and yet still refreshingly honest.
