It isn't too horrible, in fact the book is a nice size for reading and doing the exercises, but the cd, when imported to my computer does not play back in a lineal fashion: ie, instead of 1,2, 3, 4, etc it is: 1,4,6,3,5. . . etc, annoying to say the least. Also, some of the grammar listings are wrong. Ie, using the wrong pronoun with certain verb tables. I may make odd grammar mistakes in my writing , but I'm not in the language business.The people at Living Language should really find better proof readers and or techies, to put out their products.
While I love a lot of Living Languages' courses like, Ultimate Arabic, Ultimate Spanish, the whole Spoken World series, these earlier basic versions really suck. This is the most boring language book I own and I own a *lot* of language books. The lay out is confusing and discombobulated. I have been trying for a month to get thru it and it is sooooooo BORING, I have yet to get past the first chapter, page 3. I got this on someone recommending it to me and I am sorry I listened to him because this course is a big disappointment. It has so much grammar per chapter, you give up before you begin from absolute terror of reading it and nodding off. The way they try to teach you is stuffing your head with so much information at one time, you can't wrap your head around it. The first chapter is so intimidating and that follows throughout the whole book. They spend more time explaining sentence structure and grammar in each chapter, there is little dialog and little else. I think that maybe, just maybe I might feel differently if I had another course under my belt and I understood Japanese a bit better but as a beginner basics course, that to me, is not true. No beginner could really do this unless they have a head--and love, for grammar and sentence structure explanations. I can't complain too hard, fortunately I got it used for 10 bucks so its little money lost and a lesson learned. I will come back and update later maybe my opinion will change but for now, if you are a beginner that hates grammar, sentence structure and detailed explanations, then avoid this book like Typhoid Mary and come back to it later. If you LOVE grammar, and that type of thing, this course is right up your alley.
If you don't already know a little Spanish this course is difficult at first, and you pretty much will need to use the book. Not a good course to learn Spanish in your car. First lesson and they're rattling off sentences that you have no idea what is being said. Don't give enough time after each word or phrase to be able to repeat it after them. I don't have time to study the book at home, so a little disappointed that it doesn't seem to be just an audio course. I've had a little Spanish but still barely keeping up. Have to repeat lessons many times to understand.
Let's be honest here. Nothing magical will happen just by buying a language course unless you work hard. That takes motivation and the main strength of these courses seem to be the way they keep you focussed on moving forwards. Admittedly having a Brazilian girlfriend has been a bigger motivation for me, but the logical flow through the basics (which is as far as I have got in the few days since this arrived) and the continual chances to try out what you are learning by constructing your own versions of the phrases and sentences, shows how this will work.The presentation of the course book, dictionary (you may need to buy a bigger dictionary later, but this one covers the course material effectively) and 4 CDs in their gate-fold card holder, shows that the makers have paid attention to making it look inviting. It's too soon to tell whether my language skills and vocabulary will ever increase to the point where I can fluently converse with my girlfriend's family and friends, but as I said at the start you only get the benefits of any course by practicing. And now, if you'll excuse me I have some studying to do...
its European spanish, NOT latin america (there are several differences), they should disclaim that. But otherwise its ok. There are better systems out there, but for the price, its not too bad.
This is an excellent book to get started learning Portuguese. The book follows a logical order and incorporate the vocabulary in sets of exercises the learner will find in every unit. It provides a fun and interactive way to learn the language. Perfect for beginners. I already speak some Portuguese and still use it to go over a few aspects of grammar and vocabulary. Great method, I am very happy I bought this book.
I used this book in conjunction with a Level 1 adult education Portuguese class. The book and CD's are both well-structured and useful.I was especially impressed with the dictionary, actually, because it places a big emphasis on showing usage examples of common words, within sentences. For example, the entry for the word "sem" ("without") contains the phrases "cafe sem acucar" ("coffee without sugar") and "sem duvida" ("without a doubt"). Really useful!
I have learned three other languages via the U.S. Foreign Service Institute methodology, which has its roots in the WWII Army Language School courses and has been refined and refined again and again over the years. This course follows very much along the same lines, with dialogues to memorize and careful introductions of new material. The accompanying audio is excellent, providing the help I need with the difficult pronunciations of Portuguese. My biggest problem is trying to memorize, as I am now 71 years old and my mind is not as absorptive as it was when I learned French (and am still fluent) when I as 23!
