I am learning Spanish and wanted to give myself a jump ahead by learning Mexican sayings, since most of the Latinos I'm likely to meet here are from Mexico. You would expect different sayings from a different people and they certainly have some different sayings. People are people where ever you go. They have a lot of the very same sayings as well. This is a pretty good little book on the subject. It has the saying in Spanish and the English translation. For example: "Out of sight, out of mind." in the Mexican form is: "Far from eyes, far from heart." Theirs is more meaningful since the expression usually refers to someone who has left you. Though not exhaustive, it is more than adequate. Good bang for the buck. Warning: You will have to ask your Mexican friends what some of the sayings mean because the translation doesn't always make it clear. Even so, you can learn as much as you want from this book. Also, a good excuse to engage someone from there you'd like to meet. It makes a swell gift too.
Oh, my! I thought I had heard them all, apparently I hadn't.I have thoroughly enjoyed this book.
Wonderful book!
This slim, nicely organized collection of Mexican sayings (or "dichos Mexicanos") made a nice addition to my writer's library. I collect many resource books that help me add flavor and accuracy to my fiction and poetry writing. This book pulls together many wonderful aphorisms from Mexican culture and gives them to you in both English and Spanish. The categories include sayings about love, philosophy, religion, animals, and others. Dichos such as, "Old is the sun and it still shines," or "It was your fortune to have a wagon, now drag it," make you smile while offering ancient truths. This is an enjoyable and educational collection that you will come back to time and time again.
