“Hidden History of the Florida Keys” is a great book on the Florida Keys. I learned many things that I didn’t know about before reading the book. In particular, the treasure hunting and Key West historic preservation chapters were eye-opening and informative as well as the first two chapters that give a historical point of view of what life in Key West was like all those years ago. I recommend this book for your dose on Florida Keys history!

A fun history of the Florida keys with some details of colorful characters that called the keys home during its colorful development. I learned a lot. It was easy to read

This is a wonderful book, beautifully written and well researched. Great for anyone loving history, Florida and the Keys! Also great for gift giving. I loved it!

Interesting book with some Keys history I did not know. I lead historic bicycle yours of Key West, so this is gold!

A great read. Being born and raised in Miami I still can't get enough of the history of my beloved keys and this book has so many great stories it's hard to put down. A must have.

Well written colorful stories about the early movers and shakers in the Florida Keys. Lots of pictures of how it was then.

If you are even browsing this title, it means you must be a lover of the Florida Keys and their history. So you already know it’s a history full of romantics, eccentrics, schemers and often dubious dealings. This is a collection of ten tales of such characters or dealings. The title is a little misleading, as the stories are more forgotten than hidden, in the sense of being scandalous. But that doesn’t make them less interesting. From duelists to treasure hunters - not the one you think - to dreaming developers, I am sure that there is something here to surprise even the most knowledgeable Keys buff. The final chapter, about how the present day charm of Old Town Key West was engineered by a small group of dedicated locals, could and should be a book in itself. So take the plunge on this carefully researched effort that brings back to life some vivid characters unfairly hidden by the mists of time!

This history of the Florida Keys, written in an elegant narrative style, is a great way to learn more about that wonderful area. Somewhat reminiscent of the focus of the late Gene Burnett's 3-volume set of Florida histories - quirky stories that show the real Florida - but set in the Keys and much more interesting and relevant to the present time. Albritton and Wilkinson make a very good team. Wilkinson's memories and research along with Albritton's research and writing, just can't be beat. Thanks for a really great way to learn Florida history!

I had to get this book for an ECE class that I am taking. To be perfectly honest, by page 4, section 1-3, the author lost credibility with me where the section reads "Socialization as a unique human process." *long pause* Really? The first sentence reads, "Most social scientists agree that socialization is unique to human beings because humans can think." *long pause* Really? Socialization is universal to all beings on this planet. All animals are socialized into their packs, pods, flocks, etc. by their parents whom teach them how to find food, shelter, and play. This alone is a testament that, yes, animals think. That's not just a human thing. While the scientific proof that animals "think" may not be in the ECE realm of study, I think it's relatable enough that more in-depth research should have been done.Secondly, while I now felt like questioning the validity all her resources, I was really put off by the section on discipline (as negative reinforcement) where she has a "source" that promotes punishment, such as spanking. She wrote that there are cons, but the section is heavily slanted towards discipline as beneficial. "When using punishment, be aware of the negative, as well as the positive, consequences for the child." (p. 62) Again, really? Punishment is usually used because the person in charge doesn't like something and wants something different; thus, the "positive" outcomes are really a perception of the punisher getting what he/she wants.Ironically, I'm taking a different ECE class that has a book promoting the exact opposite of this book where it states that there is no room for discipline in an ECE environment, thereby promoting guidance instead. You don't have to agree or believe me, but please use your own mind and judgment. If something in this book isn't right, then feel free not to believe it. Just because something is written in a book doesn't make it accurate.

Definitely worth renting! This textbook is SO expensive and I am not sure why because it is a paperback. Nevertheless, I rented it from Amazon for a fraction of the price to purchase brand new. It was supposed to be a used rental, but mine was brand new and I was extremely pleased! I was actually reluctant to return it because I really liked the content of the textbook and thought it might come in handy even after my degree is complete. I can't say that about too many of my textbooks. I enjoyed the course as well.

I LOVE this book! I used it in class and then ended up keeping the book because I refer back to it so often. I am a family child care provider and a parent as well. I refer back to it for my own children as well as helping educate parents on issues. This book offers a wealth of information regarding parenting styles, education and learning styles/envirenments, developmental stages, ect. I loaned this book out and the woman who borrowed it REFUSES give it back (or even replace it for that matter) so here I am giving up the fight and replacing it myself since I find it so valuable. When I first purchased this book it was almost 200 dollars- Amazon prices are a steal! I would highly reccommend this book to any parent, childcare provider, or teacher even if you are not required to use for school.

Way cheaper than buying books. Electronic is easy to mark and find what I am looking for.

For the book for my son for school. Used it and sent it back.

It is an e-book with insightful information on family and community.

I bought this book new and since it was new I assumed that I would have an access code to Mindtap which I have to have for the class.

The book was in good shape and it's perfect for the person who doesn't want to spend hundreds of dollars on books. This is a great way to save money.

This is a clever and fun bathtime adaptation of "Barnyard Dance" by the same author. The washcloth that comes with it is not exactly award winning quality, but the rhymes are fun, and my 18-month old (who loves books) had a blast "washing" all the animals in the book; Boynton goes through a whole list of animals that need a bath, and then, at the end kids "wash the duck - and chicken too... Silly Chicken, now wash YOU!" I'd put this book slightly ahead of "Bathtime" by Sandra Boynton, simply because I think this one has better flow and a more engaging activity, but both are good buys for the money. I do recommend storing them open on the counters or towel racks in between bathtimes, though, just to prevent them from molding.

Thought this would be similar to Barnyard Dance which my toddler has LOVED since the first day we read it. It's not even close. Maybe I was expecting too much from a bath book. It also seems to have been designed to be sold as a set with a cow washcloth, which I did not get. The "story" is about using the washcloth to wash the animals in the book. She still likes it, but I feel like I overpaid.

I like Sandra Boynton books. This one is very very simple-- just a few pages, with a few words each. More suited for 1 year olds, too basic for my 2 yr olds.

Adorable! My baby loves washing the animals, and smiles every time we read it. With just a few words on each page, it it perfect for the attention span of my then 6 month old and still a favorite of my now 10 month old. Barnyard Dance is one of our favorite books, and I now get the two books for any of my friends that are having babies!

This book does exactly what you want it to. Your infant/toddler/child can chew, slobber, and get water all over it and it keeps ticking. If they made cars this indestructible we'd all save a lot of money in our lifetimes. Book is great too, but it Sandra Boynton so you should already know that!

This is my toddlers favorite bath time book. He loves the noises you make for each animal and likes to flip through the book while pointing to get me to make the sounds.

My 2 year old loves this book. He takes with him in the bath and to read when he goes to potty which is great cause the book can be easily washed

I wish I had found this earlier. My son is 22 months old, and loves the idea of taking a book in the bath, but it's a very simple story. Wash the duckies, wash the cow, wash you! If I had introduced it around 12-18 months old, it would have been a bigger hit.

The Spectators: A Novel

Review

“Jennifer duBois is one of a handful of living American novelists who can comprehend both the long arc of history and the minute details that animate it. The Spectators is yet another triumph in an impressive oeuvre: a brave and painfully vivid excavation of the AIDS crisis in New York that, with its fine prose, breathes life back into an era of death.”—Karan Mahajan, author of the National Book Award finalist The Association of Small Bombs“Elegant, enigmatic, and haunting.”—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)“The Spectators is a beautifully written, even aphoristic novel, but its greatest strength is its characterization. . . . Brilliantly conceived and . . . utterly unforgettable.”—Booklist (starred review)“An enigmatic talk show host is thrust into a spotlight he definitely did not want when a group of teens responsible for a mass shooting claim to be his biggest fans—and the past he wishes would stay hidden begins to come back to the surface. Covering three decades of American culture, including the nineties pop culture wars and the AIDS crisis of the eighties to the liberated seventies, this may be duBois’s most ambitious work yet.”—Lit Hub, “Most Anticipated Books of 2019”“The Spectators is magnificent, a richly textured epic suffused in heartbreak yet spring-loaded with vitality. Jennifer duBois is among the finest writers of our generation and this is her most accomplished novel.”—Anthony Marra, author of The Tsar of Love and Techno“Another breathtaking novel from one of our most brilliant writers . . . No one writes about the contradictions of American society and the foibles of the human heart with such incisive wit and sensitivity. The Spectators is a tense and propulsive exploration of how easily we can let our best intentions slip away. As secrets are uncovered, Jennifer duBois reminds us that to truly see, without apology or artifice, is itself an act of compassion. This novel pulses with intelligence and heart.”—Kirstin Valdez Quade, author of Night at the Fiestas“The Spectators is Jennifer duBois’s ambitious and assured novel that strives to answer the question: What tragedies deserve to be told? Each sentence is more beautiful than the next, every line of dialogue sharper and funnier. I savored it all.”—Mandy Berman, author of Perennials“A masterpiece, The Spectators is a thrilling high-wire act. Combining a symphonic structure with unflinching psychological insight, this gorgeous novel explores the ways in which we betray and redeem one another—how we tell each other’s stories and, in doing so, discover our own. Jennifer duBois is one of this generation’s singular talents. ”—Mary Helen Specht, author of Migratory Animals“Every page is so brilliant, and every character so irreverent, that you’ll hardly realize what you have in your hands is a passionate love story unfolding against the backdrop of a lost world. As you weave among ghosts, the witticisms turn into laments, then prayers, and through it all the writing is so damn good.”—Deb Olin Unferth, author of Wait Till You See Me Dance“This contemporary tragedy, shot through with comic energy and a quiet, radical hope, has arrived at precisely the right moment. Dubois is a brilliant writer, and I could read her sentences forever.”—Karen Russell, author of Vampires in the Lemon Grove “The Spectators is a jarring reminder of a not-long-ago paradigm in which we could be shocked and shamed by daytime talk shows and mass shootings, when America still put its collective cultural faith in art and entertainment at the seeming genesis of it all: New York City. Only a writer with the easy, exquisite intellect of Jennifer duBois could render the slow debasement of individuals and the groups they comprise with such authenticity and compassion, and make the experience of reading it all such a pleasure. I was awed and humbled by every page.”—Xhenet Aliu, author of Brass “Jennifer duBois is a wonderful writer—funny and humane, generous and wise—and her newest novel, The Spectators, is a searing and moving examination of our culture’s obsession with celebrity and the public persona. With penetrating wit and psychological acuity, duBois has created one of the most complicated and memorable characters I’ve read in years. . . . A brilliant and propulsive book—I loved it.”—Molly Antopol, author of The UnAmericans
