Although the book is set in Bombay in the 1990s, it could be anywhere in the world. It opens with the main character, Nariman Vakeel, already in the clutches of Parkinson’s disease. Nariman is the father of three grown children: unmarried and unemployed stepson Jal, quiet and unassuming; stepdaughter Coomy, domineering, bossy and pushy; and daughter Roxana. While the stepchildren live with and take care of him in an apartment in the spacious Chateau Felicity building which he has bequeathed to them, Roxana lives with her husband, Yezad, and two sons, Jehangir and Murad, in a newer apartment bought by Nariman, a fact that Coomy, envious and bitter, never stops pointing out.Perhaps it’s because the sprawling seven-room palatial apartment is rapidly degenerating, almost parallel to Nariman’s health, while their two-roomed small is relatively modern and newly purchased. Foreshadowing of the plot and imminent crisis is hinted at in the first chapter. Confined to his bedroom and bored, Nariman seeks solace in his evening walks, which represent to him "bustling life" and are "like air for starving lungs, after the stale emptiness of the flat." These walks are therapeutic, "magical" and enchanting like a circus or "a magic show." Using his umbrella as a walking stick, he saunters past the corner where vegetable vendors congregate and "their baskets and boxes, overflowing with greens and legumes and fruits and tubers, transformed the corner into a garden." And from "time to time" he bends to touch the "voluptuous onions, glistening tomatoes, purple brinjals and earthy carrots" as they "hallowed the dusk with their color and fragrance." He sees a man selling bananas and the "bunches were stacked high and heavy upon his outstretched arms," and at the flower stall, two men "sat like musicians, weaving strands of marigold, garlands of jasmine and lily and rose, their fingers picking, plucking, knotting, playing a floral melody…"He needs this time alone; he is a man haunted by his tragic past. In his youth he loved a woman whom he could not marry because she was not a Parsi and his parents would never stand for it. So he marries a widow with two children and even though they have a child together and he tries to make his marriage work, it never does. All their lives are ruined and he remains haunted by what could have been, should have been and what-ifs for the rest of his life. But walks mean that Nariman, afflicted with Parkinson and osteoporosis, could hurt himself seriously if he has a fall – a thought that is anathema to Coomy, who yells at him daily as she watches him prepare himself. She does not help him nor does she offer to accompany him on his walks. Several times he has come home with abrasions on his elbow and foreman and a limp. One day he breaks his ankle and, with it encased in a cast, he must depend on Coomy and Jal for his most basic requirements; they must clean, shave and wash him and, since they can’t take him to the bathroom, they buy a commode which they keep next to his bed.The smell of his urine, feces and the body odor is more than Coomy can bear. In a gesture both mean-spirited and cowardly, she deviously hatches a plan. She quickly bundles the old man into an ambulance and takes him to Roxana’s small apartment. Depositing him on a couch in their living room, which becomes his home for the next few months, changes the lives of everyone. They struggle, they grow, they learn and they endure. With painstaking detail, Mistry draws the conflict within each character: the guilt, compassion, family obligation versus desire for independence, and the building of human relationships. He also holds a mirror to the characters' consciences, so that they can acknowledge what they are and what they portray to the world.Family Matters triumphs because its characters are alive and because it captures the moods and conflicting emotions of three generations. This book further seals Mistry’s reputation of excellence and brilliance.

Having previously read this author's masterwork (in my opinion), A Fine Balance, I subsequently bought Family Matters. I enjoyed the book very much. I think his previous book was exceptional and Family Matters does not meet quite that same brilliant standard. Nevertheless Family Matters is an extraordinary moving and powerful work which I heartily recommend to anyone interested in complex characters and their relationships, the motivations that drive apparently selfish or unselfish behavior, and Indian life in general.If you are from a western nation you will find yourself immersed in a culture that is very different, and yet you will meet characters that reflect a full range of all too familiar attitudes. Family relationships are difficult everywhere, and most of us are guilty at some time of treating family members badly. If you read this book thoughtfully you may find yourself examining your own family in a new way.

I felt as if I knew these people intimately....on a visceral level. The richness of their lives, their routines, their individual struggles and sufferings, their deep love for one another.I was impressed with how similar we all are regardless of background, culture or religion...the value in tradition, ritual and history.Would that we could all see and embrace these deep, human connections rather than focus on our superficial differences.A beautifully written and deeply satisfying book....gentler, in a way, than the author's "A Fine Balance". I very much enjoyed them both.

This is a slow, patient, very delicately written book. The inclination toward the maudlin was saved by the superb writing. A very realistic portrayal of a family's attempts to deal with an elderly family member. No one is cruel, but they are tired, challenged, impatient, strained, and helpless. The elderly family member was once young and robust, who was the center of a young woman's obsessive love, and he experiences nightmares of shame and guilt of what happened to his beloved and his wife. His parents wanted to see him happy, and their insistence caused great unhappiness not just for himself, but for his wife, and his parents died before they could witness their destruction. What was so distressing at the end was how much the characters had changed - a good husband and father become a religious fanatic, very likely to repeat the errors that destroyed his father-in-law, that the good brother had come with good intentions only to now live in fear in his own home, of a good wife and mother who loses her husband to religious fanaticism, and all these observations by a clever little boy. It took some time to get into the book, but once you understood what was going, the book was very easy to read.

Kidnap him and make him talk. Who know one kiss would make her inner wolf howl for more.Daryl Player extraordinaire wakes up taped to a chair with what looks like little duck and i mean little ducks on it. His kitty likes ducks but really wants a taste on the mocha skinned captor. Oh how his kitty wants a bite of her. Wait no biting but licking could so be on the menu. I have to say this one is quite the hoot. In some ways it reminds strongly of a Kasey Michaels work. The dialogue is priceless. The characters are strong, hot, and very funny. Cynthia is a vet who is also a wolf shifter with the shyness problem. She can't shift in front of any one and her inner beast at bit of coward/worry wart.Cyn is looing for her friend Aria who has disappeared while in Bitten Point. Her only clue is a selfie taken with the a man that see sent to Cyn before she disappeared. So, She has come to Bitten Point and to the local bar looking for him. When she finds him she flirts with him and gets him into her car. Where she promptly drugs him and takes him to motel, where is duct tapes him to a chair.When Daryl comes too in the motel room ducted taped with tape that has rubber duckies on it and then has Cyn appear with a gun. Mind you the gun is a paint ball gun, things take an interest turning. After they get the reason or kidnap sorted out Daryl offers to help her and they spend the night together, fully dressed and sleeping, only to be awaken by a wolf/german shepherd smelly dogman and a flying lizard. Things get progressively crazier as the story continues.When Daryl Panther keeps insisting Cyn is his mate and bite her, she bites him back. Her Parents arrive and his mother shows up and between all the craziness with the friend missing and the Parents planning the wedding things go nutzie really, really fast. There is so much going on in this story you really have to read it. You are going to be laughing so hard your stomach will hurt and the tears will be running.

Cynthia was wolf shifter and veterinarian who was under pressure from her mother to settle down with a nice husband and cubs. Haha but I don't think that kidnapping a sexy panther was her mother's idea for Cynthia to find a guy.Daryl was a panther shifter who made the mistake of hitting on the wrong woman (or did he now!?). All he was looking for was having a great time instead he found himself adducted by a naughty and sexy shewolf.All Cynthia was looking for were answers regarding a friend of hers who was last seen with Daryl but things got out of hands because he got under her skin and made her nervous."My name's Cynthia. But my friends call me Thea.""Thea is a name for a good girl, nit a seductive kidnapper". "I think Cyn suits you better."One look at Cynthia and Daryl knew that she was his, he would do anything to make her smile and to claim her as his. He vowed to help Cyn out and that what he did even though they found themselves in danger numerous times.As Cyn, Daryl and his friends looked for Aria. They had been some attempts on Daryl and Cyn's lives yet those incidents didn't atop them from continuing to find out what was really going on in Bitten Point.PANTHER'S CLAIM was exhilarating, love the suspense that's been surrounding Bitten Point and the shifters. Joan Konner is a veteran, award-winning journalist in television and print. She served for nine years as Dean of the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism, where she introduced and taught a course in "Covering Ideas," and was publisher of the Columbia Journalism Review from 1988 to 1999. Her most recent television production was "The Mystery of Love," a 2-hour documentary special broadcast on public television in December 2006. She has produced more than 50 documentaries for public and commercial television, including the legendary six part television documentary Joseph Campbell and the Power of Myth. She also founded Public Affairs Television in partnership with Bill Moyers, and served as President of the company and Executive Producer of such series as God and Politics, In Search of the Constitution, and The World of Ideas. Her work has been widely honored: in addition to 16 Emmys, she has won the Peabody Award; Alfred. I. duPont Award; three American Bar Association Awards; the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism’s Alumni Award; and the New Jersey Press Women’s Association Award for Outstanding Accomplishment. Being a person who's not completely an atheist but likes to read quotes about great thinkers, I was really curious about this book. I already had seen the book before but decided to buy the book anyways since its so cheap.Like some other reviewers have said, this book has its pros and cons.First the pros. This book gives you a quick reference to lines that will make you think and may inspire you to formulate your own opinion. The quotes belong from various sources.Now the cons. I gave this book 2 stars because I can see that the author did not put more time and effort into this. Seems that the "book" was conceived of as a way to jump on the hot religion controversy and make some quick cash. And since its a quick read, more people will like to buy it. Why do I think this? Because there are absolutely no references to the sources of these quotes. For all I know, some quotes may be made up. Seriously, it could not have taken much to just mention where these quotes came from. The author went through all this trouble of collecting quotes but didnt stop to think that it's nice to have references. It's not a matter of me believing the quote is actually real or not. It's more about my fascination with these thinkers. I would have loved to know where all the Bertrand Russell quotes came from. It would have been helpful for other readers too to know what books of his to read.The author says that many quotes are from fictional works. Ok, so what? Why even put this here instead of the sources? So I hope this author republishes this volume to make it good. For all I know, this book can me mostly nonsense and made up. How can I know unless I looked up all the quotes myself, in which case I could just publish my own atheist quote book with references. Maybe I'll do that!I don't want to ramble, but I'm disappointed with this book. Religion is so controversial these days and it would be nice to have a book like this, but with references. So dear author, please make a revision, I know you had good intentions.

I read this book as a pdf, then went and bought the book. The book is filled with timely quotations from people who are a lot smarter and braver than I. This is a great book to fall back on when you need something simple, yet intriguing to read. The people quoted come from all venues and time periods. Even Homer Simpson is quoted, as is Helen Keller and Mark Twain. Five stars for this one.

I really enjoyed this book for what it is, a collection of quotes and thoughts from famous atheists and other writers (not all of the quotes reflect the authors true feelings and beliefs as some were taken from works of fiction).I ordered this for my Kindle and read it the first time in only two days. Then I reread it slowly, this time saving the quotes with the Kindle's built in notes feature. I have read many of these quotes before, but I did find at least ten excerpts that I had never heard before and that I will memorize and use them when the time is right.I do wish that this book was a little more academic. There were many times that I was puzzled that the author did not include some important and well known quotes on a particular subject. For instance, Mark Twain was once asked if he was afraid of death. He reportedly answered "I was dead for millions of years before I was born and it never inconvenienced me a bit." I also thought that the structure of the book (the order of the chapters and the names of them) were a little weak. Other than that, I endorse this book and recommend it to others who are looking for this type of reference.

Lovely little book, couldn't put it down until I read every one of the quotes. I'm going to buy several to give as gifts. I've read the reviews that complain that there aren't any citations. They weren't necessary for me. Just the fact that someone was able to put into words what I could not express completely myself was enough, it didn't really matter who they were. If I want to study more about the authors of the quotes I'll look them up myself unless the reviewer who has suggested that there are other more complete reference books would divulge those titles. For someone just learning about atheism I'm sure it would be an excellent stepping stone to other more complete reads.

Being an irreverent person myself I found great delight in the company of so many other free thinkers. Readers might be surprised to find how many of the founding fathers and early American presidents had no religious beliefs. (Can you imagine a president today being so honest?) It won't change anyone's beliefs -- what ever does? But it's fun if you are already a non-believer. It runs from the clearly developed logic of Bertrand Russell to the gentle humor of Mark Twain. But as usual Woody Allen has the last word: "Well I do think there is someone out there who watches over us. Unfortunately it's the government."

A book that carries the title of "The Atheist's Bible" sure sounds interesting. Based on the title alone, one might surmise that it is an epic treatise on atheism. One also might guess it will be something, well, biblical in grandeur. Prepare to be disappointed. Amazon doesn't delve into too much detail describing the book and sadly, I didn't do much research on it before buying it. It is nothing more than quote mining. Literally nothing but quotes, with no commentary on the quotes themselves and no information on the people (or fictional charcters) that uttered or wrote the words. There is no insight into the context of these quotes or the societal conditions of when they materialized. That's too bad because it seems there was a missed oppurtunity here.That being said, the quotes are quite good and entertaining, but as another reviewer suggested, this book is a perfect ultra-light read while sitting upon a porcelain throne.

I'm actually new to this subject and I found this book to read just to satisfy my curiosity and provide myself with some entertainment. Graphology isn't a science so there's no way to actually prove any of what the book claims. Despite this, I still find this to be an interesting read and I have taken note of what it has to say about some of my friends. This book is really easy to read through but I find that it does not provide us with too many examples nor does it go too in depth with the descriptions.

Required textbook for MBA Operations and Supply Chain Management class. Very dry. Textbook rental is definitely the way to go with this text. Best of luck!

returned. not what was expected.

Even though the book had few writings and markings, overall it is in good condition and the price was matchless- only about one third the price of a brand new book. The only thing I did not like was the service of the seller- a third party called Bookbyte123. They never contacted me when the book was shipped out and so finally I HAD to contact them to find out the status of my order. The book did get to me on-time but a little more communication would have been nice.Prakriti

I had to purchase this book for a class and, while I can't say the subject matter is scintillating, Jacobs & Chase do a good job of explaining the concepts and making them applicable in today's business environment. The step-by-step video examples have proven most helpful from an instructional perspective.

This is for a class...obviously the instructor picked the book. The instructor did not register the course with McGraw Hill for quizzes and testing though...however, McGraw Hill online references are still available for use, review, etc. I am pleased with the free online resources as they add value to the book and enhance your learning. The class videos are not available though as Hurricane Sandy took out the website and you now need to register and find the videos displayed in class. Delivery from Amazon was amazing and on-time as promised.

New product was missing access code. Whole point of buying a brand new text book is for the access code.
