Joan Konner is a veteran, award-winning journalist in television and print. She served for nine years as Dean of the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism, where she introduced and taught a course in "Covering Ideas," and was publisher of the Columbia Journalism Review from 1988 to 1999. Her most recent television production was "The Mystery of Love," a 2-hour documentary special broadcast on public television in December 2006. She has produced more than 50 documentaries for public and commercial television, including the legendary six part television documentary Joseph Campbell and the Power of Myth. She also founded Public Affairs Television in partnership with Bill Moyers, and served as President of the company and Executive Producer of such series as God and Politics, In Search of the Constitution, and The World of Ideas. Her work has been widely honored: in addition to 16 Emmys, she has won the Peabody Award; Alfred. I. duPont Award; three American Bar Association Awards; the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism’s Alumni Award; and the New Jersey Press Women’s Association Award for Outstanding Accomplishment. Being a person who's not completely an atheist but likes to read quotes about great thinkers, I was really curious about this book. I already had seen the book before but decided to buy the book anyways since its so cheap.Like some other reviewers have said, this book has its pros and cons.First the pros. This book gives you a quick reference to lines that will make you think and may inspire you to formulate your own opinion. The quotes belong from various sources.Now the cons. I gave this book 2 stars because I can see that the author did not put more time and effort into this. Seems that the "book" was conceived of as a way to jump on the hot religion controversy and make some quick cash. And since its a quick read, more people will like to buy it. Why do I think this? Because there are absolutely no references to the sources of these quotes. For all I know, some quotes may be made up. Seriously, it could not have taken much to just mention where these quotes came from. The author went through all this trouble of collecting quotes but didnt stop to think that it's nice to have references. It's not a matter of me believing the quote is actually real or not. It's more about my fascination with these thinkers. I would have loved to know where all the Bertrand Russell quotes came from. It would have been helpful for other readers too to know what books of his to read.The author says that many quotes are from fictional works. Ok, so what? Why even put this here instead of the sources? So I hope this author republishes this volume to make it good. For all I know, this book can me mostly nonsense and made up. How can I know unless I looked up all the quotes myself, in which case I could just publish my own atheist quote book with references. Maybe I'll do that!I don't want to ramble, but I'm disappointed with this book. Religion is so controversial these days and it would be nice to have a book like this, but with references. So dear author, please make a revision, I know you had good intentions.

I read this book as a pdf, then went and bought the book. The book is filled with timely quotations from people who are a lot smarter and braver than I. This is a great book to fall back on when you need something simple, yet intriguing to read. The people quoted come from all venues and time periods. Even Homer Simpson is quoted, as is Helen Keller and Mark Twain. Five stars for this one.

I really enjoyed this book for what it is, a collection of quotes and thoughts from famous atheists and other writers (not all of the quotes reflect the authors true feelings and beliefs as some were taken from works of fiction).I ordered this for my Kindle and read it the first time in only two days. Then I reread it slowly, this time saving the quotes with the Kindle's built in notes feature. I have read many of these quotes before, but I did find at least ten excerpts that I had never heard before and that I will memorize and use them when the time is right.I do wish that this book was a little more academic. There were many times that I was puzzled that the author did not include some important and well known quotes on a particular subject. For instance, Mark Twain was once asked if he was afraid of death. He reportedly answered "I was dead for millions of years before I was born and it never inconvenienced me a bit." I also thought that the structure of the book (the order of the chapters and the names of them) were a little weak. Other than that, I endorse this book and recommend it to others who are looking for this type of reference.

Lovely little book, couldn't put it down until I read every one of the quotes. I'm going to buy several to give as gifts. I've read the reviews that complain that there aren't any citations. They weren't necessary for me. Just the fact that someone was able to put into words what I could not express completely myself was enough, it didn't really matter who they were. If I want to study more about the authors of the quotes I'll look them up myself unless the reviewer who has suggested that there are other more complete reference books would divulge those titles. For someone just learning about atheism I'm sure it would be an excellent stepping stone to other more complete reads.

Being an irreverent person myself I found great delight in the company of so many other free thinkers. Readers might be surprised to find how many of the founding fathers and early American presidents had no religious beliefs. (Can you imagine a president today being so honest?) It won't change anyone's beliefs -- what ever does? But it's fun if you are already a non-believer. It runs from the clearly developed logic of Bertrand Russell to the gentle humor of Mark Twain. But as usual Woody Allen has the last word: "Well I do think there is someone out there who watches over us. Unfortunately it's the government."

A book that carries the title of "The Atheist's Bible" sure sounds interesting. Based on the title alone, one might surmise that it is an epic treatise on atheism. One also might guess it will be something, well, biblical in grandeur. Prepare to be disappointed. Amazon doesn't delve into too much detail describing the book and sadly, I didn't do much research on it before buying it. It is nothing more than quote mining. Literally nothing but quotes, with no commentary on the quotes themselves and no information on the people (or fictional charcters) that uttered or wrote the words. There is no insight into the context of these quotes or the societal conditions of when they materialized. That's too bad because it seems there was a missed oppurtunity here.That being said, the quotes are quite good and entertaining, but as another reviewer suggested, this book is a perfect ultra-light read while sitting upon a porcelain throne.

I'm actually new to this subject and I found this book to read just to satisfy my curiosity and provide myself with some entertainment. Graphology isn't a science so there's no way to actually prove any of what the book claims. Despite this, I still find this to be an interesting read and I have taken note of what it has to say about some of my friends. This book is really easy to read through but I find that it does not provide us with too many examples nor does it go too in depth with the descriptions.

Even though the book had few writings and markings, overall it is in good condition and the price was matchless- only about one third the price of a brand new book. The only thing I did not like was the service of the seller- a third party called Bookbyte123. They never contacted me when the book was shipped out and so finally I HAD to contact them to find out the status of my order. The book did get to me on-time but a little more communication would have been nice.Prakriti

I had to purchase this book for a class and, while I can't say the subject matter is scintillating, Jacobs & Chase do a good job of explaining the concepts and making them applicable in today's business environment. The step-by-step video examples have proven most helpful from an instructional perspective.

This is for a class...obviously the instructor picked the book. The instructor did not register the course with McGraw Hill for quizzes and testing though...however, McGraw Hill online references are still available for use, review, etc. I am pleased with the free online resources as they add value to the book and enhance your learning. The class videos are not available though as Hurricane Sandy took out the website and you now need to register and find the videos displayed in class. Delivery from Amazon was amazing and on-time as promised.

New product was missing access code. Whole point of buying a brand new text book is for the access code.

This book is a page turner. I've read many books on the subject matter and this one grabs and keeps your attention, Facts about the subject matter, the exorcism, and those who do battle with evil are very informative, This is not the movie, it is better. What is so good about the book besides the story, is Taylor's processing of the information as if he is deciding what to think himself about what he is telling. What to believe and not to. All I can tell you Troy, you're are right. Once you know about them........they know about you. I know because I write about the subject matter too.I'm not a grammar cop, so the typos, which are not the author's fault as far as I can see, don't bother me. The trip Taylor takes you on is well worth the occasional spelling error. Ranks up there with the best of the books on Exorcism.

This review is for The Devil Came to St. Louis Paperback.I just finished reading this for a class I am enrolled in. The book itself is not bad, if you’re into exorcisms and other forms of horror stories. Being from the St. Louis area, the story is rather interesting. I had not known that the Exorcist movie was based on the events described in this book. The writing is rather poor though. There are often misspellings or misuse of grammar. Over all, I do not think I would recommend this book. If you really need another book about exorcisms to read, then okay, it is worth it. If you are looking for a page turner you won’t want to put down, look somewhere else.

The great story within this book is obscured by numerous misspellings, typos and mal-formed sentences. In some places this is so poorly constructed that the intended meaning of a sentence or paragraph is entirely lost. I think the the research scholarship is likely accurate, the documentation sufficient and the story itself fascinating. If the subject truly interests you, read the book.

At least for me, I read this book with the lights out hoping to be scared, but the only thing that scared me was the lack of proof reading and editing. Don't get me wrong,I love Troy Taylor and the subject matter has intrigued me for some time (being minutes from downtown St. Louis) but it really didn't scare me. It just made me question further the validity of the exorcism story of 1949.

Very in depth detail and Troy has always gone into every situation as a skeptic! The end will terrify you!

This book is fantastic for this summer! My kids tend to forget a lot because they are too busy playing during the summer months and this book has proven to be the perfect instrument to help me keep them in the game and refresh their memory as well as get ready for the next school year. I love the fact that I can use this book on my phone or tablet with my son or so he thinks that he's just playing a game with me which keeps his mind off of the fact that he's doing actual work.

Slightly overpriced for the amount of content it contains. Would be better at $15. However, a good training aid and very well laid out.

I'm not a physicist (I'm an engineer), but that doesn't stop me from having a strong interest in theoretical physics. This book, along with other Michio Kaku books have completely changed my perspective on the universe down to it's very fundamentals. This is one of the easier reads, in terms of just mental processing, but if you enjoy this book, I'd highly recommend Michio Kaku's book "Hyperspace".This did more for me than my first three college courses on physics, just saying that right now.

"In principle the ramjet engine could propel itself indefinitely, ultimately reaching distant star systems in the galaxy ... In theory, the spacecraft might be able to reach the limit of the visible universe within the lifetime of the crew member (although billions of years might have passed on Earth). ‒ from PHYSICS OF THE IMPOSSIBLE"... a universe in which left and right are reversed, matter turns into antimatter, and time runs backward is a fully acceptable universe obeying the laws of physics!" ‒ from PHYSICS OF THE IMPOSSIBLEPHYSICS OF THE IMPOSSIBLE is a speculative work on the possibility (or not) of realizing what the current state of the Science of Physics considers impossible. Its author, Michio Kaku, is a theoretical physicist who helped define String Theory. On the other hand, physics and differential calculus quickly phasered my desire to become an aeronautical engineer back in the 60s. So, you might think that Kaku's book and I would be a poor match inasmuch as I turned out to be a Life Sciences kind of guy. Well, not necessarily.Michio begins his fascinating discussion by dividing what is "impossible" into three classes. Class I (force fields, invisibility, phasers, death stars, teleportation, telepathy, psychokinesis, robots, starships, antimatter engines) includes those concepts, while unattainable today, may be possible this century or the next. Class II (faster than light speeds, time travel, entry into parallel universes), at the edge of current understanding, may be realized millions of years in the future. Nothing in these two categories violates the known laws of physics. Class III (perpetual motion machines and precognition) violates the known laws of physics and would require a paradigmatic shift.Most important to my appreciation of the subject matter, the author explains everything ‒ or nearly everything ‒ at a level that can be (mostly) understood by us Just Folks who could barely manipulate a slide rule back in the day. And except, as I recall, only one or two mentions of Einstein's famous E = (m) (c squared), he doesn't speak in equations at all.Granted, when Kako starts in about the eleven dimensions and multiverses allowed for by String Theory, the subject matter perhaps recedes over my comprehension's event horizon, but I figure he's allowed. He's earned it.One can only imagine the advances in physics since this book was copyrighted in 2008. Can Scotty now beam me up, I wonder?As with The Hidden Reality: Parallel Universes and the Deep Laws of the Cosmos by Brian Greene, PHYSICS OF THE IMPOSSIBLE will perhaps open-up the reader's mind to a sense of wonder. Ever since the Caveman first gazed up into the night sky uncontaminated by any light and thought "Dude!", such a mental epiphany is an experience to be savored.

The Physics of the Impossible was one of the best books I have ever read.Dr. Michio Kaku takes the reader on a journey from what is possible with the physics of today to what may be accomplished in the future, like time travel, invisibility, teleportation, faster than light travel, etc. He presents a detailed account of string theory, robotics, anti-gravity and phasers that make it easy for those who do not have a background in physics to understand.

You know how people always ask, "If you could sit down and have dinner with anyone, alive or dead, who would you pick and why?" Yeah, yeah, everybody picks Lincoln or Jesus.Me? I'd pick Michio Kaku. This guy is phenomenal! I'd love to sit down across the table from him, ply him whatever libations he prefers and then let him verbally go to town while I sit there and listen to him and occasionally interject asking questions.For this man to be able to not only explain previous futuristic predictions made by his predecessors with ease and an astutely keen perception of where they were correct and incorrect, but to also be able to go into such great detail about what's to come, based upon where we are now and where we've come from, it's actually something marvel over as you roll around what he's written in your brain and let it sink in.If you have ANY interest in physics or even just in the progress of mankind -- past, present and future -- this book will not disappoint.

The approach Kaku has taken with this book is very good. He has different ratings for (im)possibility: 1. possible, but existing technology is not quite there yet 2. could be possible if a new form of technology that we do not know of could be developed 3. not possible with our known laws of physics.He also rates different kinds of civilizations based on their access to energy. A type 1 is for instance a civilization that is able to harness most of the power of the earth; a type 2 most of the power of the sun; a type 3 most of the power of the galaxy etc.He uses the latest knowledge of physics to comment on cases ranging from time travel, force fields, anti-gravity and so forth. In each case he gives the (im)possibility rating and type of civilization he expects would be able to realize it. Watching sci-fi after reading this book will be different indeed, you will be able to jeer or praise the stories with much more authority.

This doesn't detract from the read--it does, however, take away some of the novelty.As I believe " science fiction ... contains elements of known, extrapolation of known or logical theoretical science" -- I find myself going back to from time to time to re-read parts of this book as I continue to walk the journey of the razor's edge.It's an easy read and a must for any die hard science fiction fan--unless, of course, you follow John W. Campbell's infamous "Science fiction is what I say it is."
