I loved this book on Mr. Atkins. Here is one of my favorite excerpts from him:"I had an authentic jazz background. What I mean by `authentic jazz' is what they basically now call street dancing - things that black black neighborhoods came up with. We've been doing those moves forthousands of year.Tap dancers basically use portions of authentic jazz dance so they'll look good as well as sound good. I am talking about dances like the Suzie Q, Charleston, and the Black Bottom; things that created excitement as soon as we came up with them. Now, right away there were adaptations of these dances and they were claimed by other people and presented in places where we weren't permitted to go. But we all know where they came from.A lot of the moves that the young kids are doing now are very familiar. They have a different beat and all that, but you look closely and you see steps there from African traditional dances."I was prompted to read more about Cholly Atkins after reading Jacqui Malone's Steppin' on the Blues, in which she dedicates a chapter to him. The book was an enjoyable read, and I learned more about Mr. Atkins and people that touched his life, especially his tap partner and life long friend, Honi Coles. I was also touched by his revelations of some very painful events in his life.I had always been vaguely aware of how important Mr. Atkins was to the development of Motown artist. But I knew nothing of his life before Motown. He was at least 50 when he became a part of their team. But most of his life he was a rhythm tap dancer. What struck me is when he said the best and most innovative tap dancer since his time is Savion Glover. Now when the master says something like that, I must take note. He says Savion is an innovator. He added a branch to an ancient tree. He has taken tap further alone and has created some complex taps.I just love those old school artists. I just have a thing for classy, well dressed men and women. The Motown machine continued the tradition of class with their performers.Thank goodness my knowledge of him is no longer vague. I want to thank Ms. Malone for introducing me to Cholly Atkins properly.

I'm astonished at the recall of all the men who shared their memories decades later. The author provides a credible analysis of "tying" up the various viewpoints. For a reader who likes military history with an interest in the importance of this Battle, this book provides that -- along with a look into the lives of men who were there. Further, many men's names are recalled, offering the reader a hopeful read of finding names of men in their own historical line. And I always like a book where the author follows up with what happened to the survivors.

Very interesting. Enjoyed reading about the battle during our stay at Kings Mountain and North Carolina. The personal narratives were great. LT COL Frederick Hambright was my great-great-great-great maternal grandfather. The narratives showed me how determined the Patriots to win the battle and the hardships that they had to deal with to get to and through the battle.

One of my ancestors serving the Patriots was killed at this battle. I read these things to understand what happened, and why we lost my grandmother's grandmother's grandfather on that day.

Well done research of an American epic. One of the participants - Leonard Hise - was an ancestor.

Great eyewitness accounts by men who fought in this battle !!!

Awesome book. Well written, easy read and very informative. Names, dates, location descriptions and quotations from participants.

Very interesting to read the accounts of individuals involved in the battle, particularly if you have an ancestor that was involved in the battle, as I do.

I have not yet finished it, but I like what I have read so far.

I liked seeing all the nutrition facts and tips amongst the recipes and tons of pictures. I like that just because it’s a short ingredient list or short instructions it doesn’t lack flavor. Some recipes are family favorites that are made healthier, which I love! I have shied away from some of my family favorites because the amount of butter or sugar. I will definitely try these. I also like the feel of the book. It seems like it will hold up in the kitchen.

I have book marked more than 20 recipes for our family so far and made the delicious Cajun tilapia tacos with the roasted corn with Chile lime sauce and Mexican cheese for the side dish. These were DELICIOUS and loved by our whole family! I love that this is making me more diligent about the ingredients I purchase too.

We love this cookbook! We have already made a few of the recipes and they were quick enough to make during the week and tasted great. My 2 and 4 yr olds loved the zoodles and every chicken recipe we have made. They have been requesting them again and again. I recommend this cookbook!

I made the lasagna last night and it was delicious. So easy! I especially like not having to brown the meat and dirty an extra dish. I can’t wait to try another recipe. I love all the photos and tips throughout this cookbook.

This cookbook is amazing! As a mom of three boys, we are constantly on the go. Finding a meal that will please everyone has always been a challenge - until now. These recipes are easy to follow and the meals are delicious (and healthy)!

The recipes are easy and family friendly which goes a long way when you don’t have to cook 2 multiple meals so the kids will eat! The desserts are always a bonus!

This is my new go to cookbook! Finally recipes that are easy to make, healthy, and enjoyed by my kids.The “Go Green”, “Go Clean”, and “Recipe Notes” (ie time saving hacks) that are added are such nice additions to the recipes.

This was a good cookbook focusing on clean eating and whole foods for anyone but particularly focused on families with children. It offered a variety of recipes including main dishes side dishes and even desserts. It includes foods such as chicken, seafood, beef, and vegetarian dishes – – so nothing was off-limits. The recipes looked fairly easy to do and delicious and pretty filling. I would recommend this book to fans of cookbooks, healthy eating, whole foods, and eating healthy with children.Special thanks to net galley for my complementary copy and return for my honest review.

The book includes annotated examples of how to apply these strategies in elementary school classrooms. The use of discussion is supported by background information. The authors provide step-by-step instructions for the implementation of discussion strategies. They also stress the importance of planning for instruction and offer a lesson-plan format that includes problem-solving strategies. Preservice and newly appointed teachers will find this book to be a useful resource for promoting discussion in the classroom. Suzanne H. Chapin is an associate professor of mathematics education at Boston University. She is interested in mathematics curricula, the education of the gifted, and how to further the mathematics achievement of economically disadvantaged students. Over the past twenty-five years, she has directed many projects and written many books in these areas. Suzanne is the coauthor of Math Matters: Understanding the Math You Teach, Grades 1-6.Catherine O Connor is a professor in language and literacy, and in linguistics, at Boston University. She teaches and conducts research in linguistics and in education, the latter with a focus on language use in classrooms. For the past ten years, she has been director of the Program in Applied Linguistics in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Boston University.Nancy Canavan Anderson is an elementary and middle school mathematics educator in the Boston area. The coauthor of Good Questions for Math Teaching, Grades 5-8, Nancy is also a Math Solutions consultant. Currently, Nancy is a doctoral candidate in mathematics education at Boston University.

I've been reading a lot of literature on Math Talk and how, when done correctly, it increases your students' understanding of mathematical concepts. When I started reading this book, I knew it would help me further develop my ability to facilitate it in my classroom. I like how the book introduces 6 techniques at the beginning and then goes into greater detail. I especially like how they use classroom examples to demonstrate the techniques. Although you may have heard of many of the techniques before, and probably already use them on your classroom, this book will be beneficial to experienced teachers since it explains the why behind them and to a depth that is invigorating. It makes me excited to come to school each day!

The great strength of this book is that it shows how to implement a method for improving students' thinking and communication skills in adverse circumstances, and to overcome students' resistance and our own occasional bad starts and blunders. Much of this information is presented in the form of examples that showed what the teacher intended to do each day, how it played out in the classroom, and what the teacher did next.The authors began their own use of Math Talk in 1998 with about 100 fourth graders, mainly from economically disadvantaged homes where English was not the primary language. Few of the students had shown potential in mathematics. Seventy-three percent of them tested as "below average" on the TOMA-2 test.The students were divided into four math classes of about 25 students each. The "Math Talk" strategy emphasized high-quality discourse, especially universal participation, attentive listening, and (over time) clear answers to the question, "Why do you think that?" By the end of the first year, teachers in other subjects noticed the students' striking ability to verbalize their thoughts and explanations. After two years, none of the students tested as "below average", and 77% tested either "above average", "superior", or "very superior".I was impressed with the insights that students developed as they interacted within the framework (and behavioral rules!) provided by Math Talk. I recommend this book highly, but teachers who are thinking about implementing Math Talk can save time by being aware of places where the authors go wrong.The authors note, correctly, that one aspect of "mathematics" is a language, whose words and symbols have meanings that are social conventions. Those meanings cannot be arrived at reliably via Math Talk. Therefore, we should teach students the standard meanings, thereby saving time for topics where Math Talk really shines.Having read this advice from the authors, I was perplexed to see them praise cases where teachers used Math Talk to arrive at definitions of triangles, "fair" games, and mathematical symbols. What those cases show isn't the successful use of Math Talk; instead, they show how easily we can convince ourselves that we're "deepening students' mathematical understanding", when we're actually herding them, subtly, toward accepting established social conventions.But don't let these issues prevent you from reading this book. Please note, too, that there is now a second edition, in which they may already have been remedied.

I had to buy and read a lot of professional development books for my Elementary Education degree program and this was one that I actually enjoyed reading. It is filled with tons of helpful examples and ways for using the math talk strategies in real classrooms. I used the discussion strategies during student teaching and it was awesome to see and hear my little 3rd graders after we had worked with our math talk for a few weeks.

This is the approach which I have been looking for since I mentored fellow students in math. I realized then that each student was working from a different base, so that to get them on a common page requires this level od discussion; exploring how others understand the task at hand.

I am teaching my granddaughter to do calligraphy. This book is an awesome guide and so easy to follow the directions for strokes and beginning techniques. We have already enjoyed working through several styles of the alphabet.

A bit disappointed as very little beginner help. I already had taken some classes but expected a bit more beginning ideas.

Book was ok. Old but fine. Pens do not write. What good is a calligraphy set when the pens do not have ink to write??
