I read as a hobby. I read all kinds of books, business, science, technical, biography, and literature. Junior knows how to tell a story, and man, has he got some stories to tell! Much like reading Tolstoy you will feel what the author is feeling and see what the author is feeling. This is a life I will never know, but now I feel like I know more about what it would be like and I truly admire the candor of the author in telling his story.

I've read a few of these books now (biker genre) and this was was really good. It reads like fiction, as I'm sure there might be a bit that is. Truly a well written book that easily floats from chapter to chapter. A great build-up at the end that left me guessing until I read the last word (I refrained from using google). I hope the Mongols appreciate some of the sacrifices made (as I'm sure they do...all brothers do). Read this one.

Again, the best true crime/outlaw biker books are written by the people who really lived it, (with ghost writing help) as opposed to researchers working from printed sources--and this is one of them. Those who write and believe that outlaw MCs exist as just a front for organized crime should have a look here... the author, Junior, undertook a life that won't make a lot of sense to the ordinary person---huge risks, to his own self, and his club brothers were taken everyday they walked into a bar with patches on--not to mention anyone else at the bar! Once upon a time, I believed in that constant war mentality--us against the world.. now, reading this, it's hard to comprehend risking the rest of your life in prison over a bar fight...or getting seriously injured or killed OR living with the guilt of doing it to someone else... Still, his is a compelling story for those very reasons--- Junior made his club his life, left it and came back despite great personal sacrifice...great story, quick delivery, and for those who care, Junior signs the book.

I’m impressed by the Junior’s writing style. His descriptions of a scene bring in all of the senses and allow the reader to just be in tye moment. Great stories within. I know I’m reading a good book when I don’t feel like I’m just slogging through to get to the end. Unfortunately for me, I’m flying right through this book and it’ll be over all too quickly.

It was a very exciting book that pulled no punches.Kind of like "Junior" himself.Being a Mongol seems to be the most important part of his life at the cost of family and friends plus large periods of his freedom. All I can say is live your life as you see fit.

This is a very well written and interesting account of his time with the Mongols MC. Rather than another book written by a cop Junior doesn't just tell the stories about the badass fights and parties but also talks about his mistakes and failures along with his successes. It's a really good account of the ups and downs of that life. Definitely recommend.

This has been the best book that I have ever read on the outlaw biker lifestyle. If you have lived it, you will find much of his experiences very familiar. If you are on the outside looking in, this book will give you the most realistic depiction of what it is like to hang around, prospect and patch into a 1% M.C.

If you like reading about sociopaths and psychos then you’ll love this book.

Clinical Practice Manual for Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine

Review

Editorial ReviewsReviewer: Santosh Dhungana, MD (Temple University Lewis Katz School of Medicine) Description: This is a point-of-care manual with essential information on managing patients with pulmonary diseases as well as medically critically ill patients. The book is a collection of decades of teaching wisdom from Dr. Landsberg that incorporates unique factoids and algorithms that are rarely found in other textbooks. The accompanying website provides access to all the chapters and images in a well-known format.Purpose: According to the preface, this book represents teaching materials and illustrative cases that the author has compiled and refined over more than a decade. It incorporates diagnostic and therapeutic algorithms for common diseases encountered in the ICU and in pulmonary medicine, addresses common misconceptions, discusses basic pathophysiology, and provides illustrative cases to help get the message across. These are worthy objectives, and the book does meet most of them by providing a concise, portable, yet comprehensive review of topics that are difficult to grasp and fraught with misconception in this field.Audience: The book is written primarily for physicians in training, including residents and fellows in pulmonary and critical care medicine. However, it should be equally useful to medical students and as a refresher to practicing pulmonologists, intensivists, and internists who take care of patients with respiratory ailments and critical illness. Dr. Landsberg has taught and practiced the specialty for decades in a premier American institution.Features: The book is divided into pulmonary and critical care sections. The pulmonary section covers the approach to hypoxemia, hypercapnia, ventilatory failure, pulmonary function testing, chest imaging, dyspnea, heart failure, pulmonary hypertension, obesity hypoventilation, lung cancer, aspergillus lung disease, cough, sarcoidosis, venous thromboembolic disease, pneumothorax and parenchymal lung disease. The critical care portion covers shock, noninvasive and invasive mechanical ventilation, hemoptysis, electrolyte regulation, altered mental status, diabetic emergencies, advanced care planning, and code discussion in the ICU. It also has other high-yield topics like bronchiectasis, pneumonia, pleural effusion, etc. The unique features of this book are the concise presentation, bulleted format, discussion of common misconceptions, ample diagnostic and management algorithms, common questions on the topic from learners, and case vignettes. Rarely found in other books, these features really magnify the impact of the book on learners. A few shortcomings include poorly formatted pictures from patients' charts and the extremely small font used in certain pictures and algorithms. Even though several topics in pulmonary and critical care medicine are missing, the book doesn't set out to be a comprehensive textbook on the subject and hence remains immensely valuable.Assessment: This point-of-care, portable manual on the most common problems encountered in pulmonary and critical care medicine is intended to enforce certain key concepts and clear up common misconceptions, not be a comprehensive textbook. This is one of the most unique and high-yield writing on this topic that I have come across, by an author who is obviously a very astute clinician and an expert in his field. I highly recommend this book to every internal medicine resident and pulmonary/critical care fellow in training.Doody's Review Service"One of the best Medicine books of all time" - BookAuthority"One of the best Medicine books of the year" - BookAuthority

Extremely valuable for both pulmonologists and intensivists of all stages (from trainees to experienced physicians). I am a junior faculty member and since receiving this book one week ago, I have used it almost every day. The chapters focus on nearly all major pulmonary and critical care topics, and are very easy to read and comprehensive. In fact, I have found this book easier to read and understand than nearly all other PCCM resources available.Aspects that I love so far (after my first week of owning this book):- Bulleted insights and information mixed in with algorithmic approaches to various topics- A conversational tone which makes the reader feel as if they are on rounds with a master clinician- The book is small enough in size to easy carry in your bag or in a large coat pocket.- The pictures really hit home certain key concepts5/5 stars and HIGHLY recommend to all physicians looking for a good resource on pulmonary and critical care medicine!

The many spelling and editing errors in the Inkling ebook are unforgivable (but correctable). I am looking forward to the updates. It's more than a year after publication and they still haven't been corrected? Doesn't the author have a smidge of vanity? Also, while the pulmonary part is excellent, some of the stuff in the critical care chapters seem taken out of a 1990s book (up to 6L of fluids in sepsis, dopamine for septic cardiomyopathy etc.). I will keep the book for its pulmonary insights (I am a surgical intensivist), but I would caution trainees to doublecheck the critical care contents before applying them blindly.

Practical, extremely high-yield, and appropriate/relevant for a wide audience - from med students to attending physicians, from NP/PAs to RTs. Great presentation of topics with bulleted points, algorithms, and imaging and clinical cases that drive home the intended teaching points. Clearly written by a master clinician with an engaging style and overflowing with teaching pearls, I found reading this manual to be very unique from other textbooks and literature in the field. The size of the book, which fits easily into your coat pocket, reemphasizes that this manual is extremely usable and is intended to be applicable to your day-to-day practice. Well done.

Excellent clinically oriented overview of pulmonary and critical care medicine. Comprehensive, well written and easy to understand. A must-have resource for residents, fellows and faculty alike!

This is an excellent resource for clinically relevant topics in critical care and pulmonary medicine. It is concise, easy to read and emphasizes on the key points that is helpful in day-to-day practice; and also covers topics that may not be as commonly encountered but definitely helpful to have a refresher nearby . Worth the investment!!

This is an excellent, clinically-focused guide to pulmonary and intensive care medicine. Covers all the basics with abundant high-quality illustrative figures and cases. Great for the intended audience of house-staff, med students, NP/PA, ICU RNs, RTs firming up their ICU knowledge. The author describes this as a readable description of all the things he wishes he knew when he was a younger doctor, and I think that theme shines through. The pearls that he describes come from experience, and are very practical/actionable to your practice. Does not dwell excessively on critical-care literature and evidenced-based medicine in critical care, which is not to say that it is not evidence based. Instead of debating subtitles of trial design and controversies in critical care, this book focuses on simpler questions of what do do with the patient in front of you. The gist of this book is the answer to the question: "If I had 20 years of experience in the ICU, how would I approach this common problem".I enjoyed:case based presentation with wonderful figuresthe best focused ICU chest radiology review I have foundsmall form-factor (lab coat pocket sized) for quick referenceenjoyed it equally to Marin's classic "the ICU book". Landsberg's work is much superior to the Washington manual of critical care and various other critical care guides on the market. would strongly recommend to ICU health care team members and students.

Overall great book for interns, residents, fellows, and faculty.- Each subject is a quick but comprehensive read, his book covers etiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment.- Easy to follow algorithms.- Expertconsult.com has great high res pictures in his book (very helpful in the ILD/DPLD chapter).- Small and light, easy to carry with you on on the wards/ICU/clinic.- Debunks tons of medical myths.- Has tons of very relevant and commonly seen cases in the book.- Sections are easy to learn, then teach back to interns/residents.- Really helps take care of the patient in front you - without getting bogged down in trial details/design, etcThanks Dr. Landsberg!

I work in both the ED and ICU and find this to be an outstanding book that covers what providers need to know. The book contains lots of pearls and addresses many misconceptions that have made it into routine practice. Dr Landsberg has done a phenomenal job making complex topics simple, understandable, and translatable to the bedside. Highly recommend this to anyone working in either the ICU or ED as required reading!

Gold medal winner of the Nautilus Book Awards, 2016"A fervent rebuke of academic-style early education — testing, flashcards and so on — in favor of a more nuanced approach, centered on the child and based on play.”—The Washington Post"[Christakis'] new ideas, analysis and methods serve to guide and support teachers, policy makers and parents in understanding the inner lives of children to stimulate their learning and “help young children be young children.”—The New York Times“Christakis . . . expertly weaves academic research, personal experience and anecdotal evidence into her book . . . a bracing and convincing case that early education has reached a point of crisis . . . her book is a rare thing: a serious work of research that also happens to be well-written and personal . . . engaging and important.”—The Washington Post"What kids need from grown-ups (but aren't getting)...an impassioned plea for educators and parents to put down the worksheets and flash cards, ditch the tired craft projects (yes, you, Thanksgiving Handprint Turkey) and exotic vocabulary lessons, and double-down on one, simple word: play."—NPR.org“The Importance of Being Little is a must-read for anyone with a two- to five-year-old, as well as for preschool professionals. In an ideal world, Christakis, a true defender of childhood, would have a national position in early childhood education.”—Diana Divecha, The Greater Good Science Center at the University of California, Berkeley"Erika Christakis has her pulse on modern American education, and she wants to help you understand it. She helps explain the doom and gloom so many parents of preschoolers feel about education, providing a much needed context to better understand it—and, hopefully, change it….This mom would encourage any parent of a young toddler to pick up a copy. Arm yourself with the information you will need to be an effective advocate for your child. Her language is accessible, engaging and flows easily. Actually, especially for them.” –Motherly“If only adults observed little children with half the energetic curiosity that little children bring to their scrutiny of adults! That, Erika Christakis argues in her wonderful book, is the key to making preschools the exciting and interesting places kids really need. For a guide to keen-eyed appreciation of preschoolers’ amazing powers, you can’t find a better one than Christakis. Read The Importance of Being Little and you won’t look at kids, or classrooms, the same way again.” —Ann Hulbert, author of Raising America: Experts, Parents, and a Century of Advice About Children   “Drawing on a wealth of research and clinical experience, Christakis deftly diagnoses one of the most urgent problems of our times and offers concrete recommendations for dealing with it, at the heart of which is the startlingly humane recognition that children are usually far more intelligent and perceptive than we assume, and possess hidden powers of imagination, sociability, and self-discovery. Learned, balanced, and hopeful, this compellingly argued and engagingly written work will not only take its place as a standard reference on early childhood education but, because ‘we are all someone’s child,’ will be of great interest to everyone concerned with the future of our nation and democratic culture.” —Orlando Patterson, John Cowles Professor of Sociology, Harvard, and author of Slavery and Social Death “A brilliant, altogether original, impeccably researched but also deeply heartfelt call to action. Just as our environment is in grave danger, so is what Christakis calls ‘the habitat of childhood.’ Her advice—practical, authoritative, but offered with the loving, personal concern of the mother and teacher that she is—soars beyond sensible into the realm of wise, disruptive, and irresistible. A tour de force.” —Edward Hallowell, M.D., author of The Childhood Roots of Adult Happiness and Driven to Distraction   “Teach your children well. It’s easier to sing than to do. Erika Christakis wants to foment a revolution in early childhood education, and with this deeply insightful, scientifically grounded, and utterly original book, she just may get her way.” —Daniel Gilbert, author of Stumbling on Happiness   “As the experts have bombarded parents with contradictory and ever more demanding advice, childrearing has become more confusing than ever, and the children themselves seem to have been left out of the picture. Parents, caregivers, teachers, and policy makers could have no surer guide through this morass than Erika Christakis. With scientific acumen, irreverent good sense, and a novelist’s eye for human detail, Christakis offers us a judicious view of the new and old realities of bringing up children.” —Steven Pinker, Johnstone Family Professor of Psychology, Harvard University, and the author of The Language Instinct and The Blank Slate  "Remarkably well-researched, erudite and concise, Erika Christakis offers parents and teachers alike a developmentally informed perspective on how preschool children learn best, along with a no-nonsense prescription for how to get them there. . . . If only we adults with our love for top-down instructional methods and endless proliferation of testing can learn to activate our kids' innate curiosity, support their natural scientific and philosophical wonder, and simply get out of their way."—Jess P. Shatkin, MD, MPH, Associate Professor of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry and Pediatrics, New York University School of Medicine  “One of the most intelligent, compelling, and funniest books I’ve read about children in a long time. Her prose sparkles. . . . Her critique of America’s early childhood programs is sharp, but humane. . . . There’s no underestimating children here: this woman is on their side. . . . Her faith in “these strong, small characters” infuses the book with moral authority, which she wears lightly, revealing her foibles as a professional and parent, and dispensing folksy wisdom from her own vividly evoked childish escapades. . . . [W]e abandon [Christakis’s argument] at our peril.”—ECE PolicyMatters"Christakis, offering both research and anecdotal history, covers all the bases: the need for quality teacher training, the dearth of male representation, the effect of low salaries, top-down imposition of 'nitpicky, decontextualized standards,' technology and screen-time, social-emotional learning, parent/teacher relationships, and more. Although the author thinks it will take years to turn early childhood education around, she never doubts the innate capability of young children to flourish, at home and in school, when they are given the right support and enough time to do so. Perhaps the most important takeaway from this thought-provoking, timely discussion is that children and adults need to be allowed the opportunity to develop meaningful relationships and to get to know and trust one another, because, as Christakis concludes, 'the most essential engine of child development is not gadgetry or testing, but deep human connection.' It’s an observation well worth considering."—School Library Journal“Sometimes a book’s message strikes me as perfect for its time. Such was my reaction to the Importance of Being Little….Christakis makes a powerful, research-based case for why the way we have been educating our young children is not working…I very much hope parents will read her book to better understand what constitutes an authentic and meaningful early childhood education. And Christakis’s message will almost certainly resonate with teachers, administrators, and educational policy makers, as well.” —Alternet“Weaving together recent research with real-life anecdotes and analogies, Christakis honors the complexity of young children and helps readers better appreciate children’s vulnerabilities and strengths. . . . Her writing is both accessible and creative.”—The Christian Century

A wise, comforting book. Children generally do not present problems to be solved or blank slates to be filled. They are just small people who are eager to learn the game of being human. What they need most of all is kindness and support. There are moments when it may be necessary to instruct them from a position of authority, such as telling them not to cross the street without holding hands. Learning the alphabet, numbers and so on should generally not require that kind of pushing. Kids will learn when they are ready. It is more important that they want to learn than exactly what and when they learn.Christakis is kind to preschool professionals. They have a hard job. Their young charges cannot articulate what they want – the teacher has to guess. Administrators and parents want to see concrete results – paper Thanksgiving turkeys are a classic example – but mass producing such banal stuff is likely to be boring to both the student and the teacher. It can also be frustrating. Some kids don't have the attention span, fine-motor control or even the interest. Even if everybody gets a gold star and a pat on the head, they know that Debbie's turkey looks better than Janny's. Kids aren't dumb. What I take out of this, as a retired guy who spends full time with his four-year-old, is that giving them a lot of time and attention Is the main thing. The materials, even curriculum are not terribly important. If the kid is talking, asking questions, seeing new things, and telling you about his life, you are doing the right stuff.

Erika Christakis has brought a wise, well reasoned, and compelling voice to the arena of early childhood education. One need only read today's NYT for a sickening reminder of what passes for cutting edge in some corners these days. [...] It's particularly galling that the children being treated this way are from underprivileged backgrounds. They have no voice and little choice.Christakis is that voice, reminding us all that listening matters. Imagination matters. That "rote" and "repetition" are stifling young minds. That we need to pinch ourselves every now and again and ask - are we doing this right? This book should be required reading for all educators, and not just pre-school.

I believe that the main idea behind this book is that children ought to be allowed to be children, which means engaging with them in a playful manner and respecting their development for what it is at each stage of their growth. This involves a lot of patience and a lot of listening.I couldn't agree more with your sentiments. I was listening to this as an audiobook, and so I didn't take advantage of all of the source material offered by the author as footnotes. I appreciate learning more about research, and that might provide an interesting source of material. What I didn't appreciate about this book was the sense I got that the author was essentially yelling at me or somebody for most of the book. Her condemnation of any number of aspects of preschool and her criticism of various child rearing approaches started to take a driver seat in the book. As a passenger along for the ride with the author, I became weary of this in the same way we generally grow tired of hearing a long string of complaints. Rather than listing so many of the ills of our child rearing systems, I thought the author could have made her book more concise and useful by choosing to battle only those elements of the system which she found particularly harmful and focusing the rest of her efforts on constructive insights, advice and research.

This book is a stream of consciousness rambling of one person who has worked in the field of Child Development for a long time. That's not a bad thing (in my opinion) but there's really no main point to the book. Sometimes she seems to contradict herself. She writes that Head Start curriculum prohibits teachers from cooking with children. That isn't the case at all. I believe the Head Start teacher in the book was misinformed. Towards the middle of the book, I found her to be pretty sanctimonious about petty things and wondered what she was going to criticize next - bulletin board borders, really? She saved the best for last, so if you find yourself flagging at the middle, skip to the last few chapters. She presents a great idea on how to offer children who attend full-day preschool a preschool curriculum in the mornings and then relaxing the ratios and standards in the afternoon to keep costs down.I have my B.A. in Child Development and worked at everything from NAEYC preschools to Head Start programs. Now I have my own 3 year old who I have just enrolled in a preschool that makes handprint turkeys, celebrates Groundhog Day, and does the calendar during circle time. My training as a teacher balks at those things but my heart for my son wins out. What matters is that he is attending a preschool where he has plenty of free time to play with other kids, where the teachers are kind and fair, and where he is able to play outside in the fresh air. None of the other things matter. I believe the author made that point in one section where a mom criticizes her daughter's Kindergarten curriculum but then changed her mind when she realized how much the teacher loved and cared for her daughter. Relationships are what define a child's experience so let's not get bogged down in the details.

Erika Christakis writes with passion, scholarship, heart and humor. The Importance of Being Little offers insights about how young kids think and learn and offers ideas on how we can vastly improve pre-school. Christakis is a fierce advocate for PLAY and through the research she sites, shows how young kids think and learn. Her writing style is completely appealing, full of stories that hold our interest. This book is a great read for early childhood educators ( bless their souls! ), young parents and grandparents and all who care about the next generation. I hope The Importance of Being Little is the first of many from an original and well informed thinker. I look forward to the next scholarly book, or even a novel, by this author...she is that good!

I had thought this would of had more instruction and tips on how to meal prep with any recipes or maybe even a template to go by. It ended up just having some bullet points and then a meal prep plan with recipes. If that's what you're looking for then it was okay. Not many pictures though and quite a few typos.

The book is organized into various parts including frequently asked questions, tips, and recipes. I’ve read several of these types of books and have realized they do not go through a final proof reading process. If that doesn’t bother you, this book definitely won’t as there were only a few errors and most were repeated so you will notice and decipher them quickly. Some of the recipes were really good. However some called for non keto ingredients which makes me question the author’s purpose.

I can give you a list of ten ways to use your life meaningfully. Or I can tell you one story which makes the same point. N. D. Wilson's "Death by Living" is not the list. It's the story. It's not linear. It's narrative. It's not even logical. It's emotional. But it packs a punch. And it's worth your time.On one level, the book is just a bunch of stories. Stories stolen from Wilson's past and present. Stories about raising multiple kids. Stories about a father who fought in the war. Stories about family trips that never went as expected. At first-read, they seem disconnected. But just like a good movie which sneaks up on you days after you saw it to make a profound point, these unrelated stories eventually come together in an inspiring and surprising way. Each story is ultimately a commentary on what it means for our lives to be a story. "Life is a story" is one of the most popular cliches in contemporary literature, especially Christian literature. But Wilson doesn't seek to just add more sentimentality to a notion already overloaded with sentimentality. He seeks to clarify it and correct it. Wilson's primary goal is to dismantle the myths associated with this popular philosophy.Wilson rejects the common belief that, as story, our lives feature us in the starring role. He writes, "Yes, your life is a story, but you are carpet-dwelling, dust-mite teensy on the scale of this stage, and only one in the multitude of His cast." God is the central character of our story and of all stories. The sooner we recognize this, the better. The more quickly we take the spotlight off of ourselves and place it on God, the more authentic our story will be.Still, God cares deeply for us and wishes to employ us in his plot: "You have the Creator God’s full attention, as much attention as He ever gave Napoleon. Or Churchill. Or even Moses. Or billions of others who lived and died unknown. Or a grain of sand. Or one spike on one snowflake. You are spoken. You are seen. It is your turn to participate in creation."And participation is the primary call of Wilson's book. He urges us to live fully--all the way to our deaths. He weaves intriguing stories of family members who "reached their deaths by living" (hence the book's title) and calls us to live and die similarly. Lay your life down, " he urges. "Your heartbeats cannot be hoarded. Your reservoir of breaths is draining away. You have hands, blister them while you can. You have bones, make them strain—they can carry nothing in the grave. You have lungs, let them spill with laughter."Wilson excels in creating memorable lines. For example, he remarks, "You cannot throw a diva fit backstage in this production and force the understudy to take your place. You are in every scene. You are on the field for every play."Perhaps these eight words are the book's best summary: "In the ground, we all have empty hands." The one thing all human stories have in common is their end. We all die. And when we die, we take nothing with us. So, Wilson argues, we may as well spend all we can while we live (hence the book's subtitle). Most importantly, we should spend it touching the stories of others. We have the opportunity to enter into the lives of others. We may not know how their stories started or how they will end. But while we can, we can bless and better their stories. And all the while, we live and die in partnership with God. "The God who looked on you with joy when you were small and racing across His gift of green grass on His gift of feet beneath His gift of sky watched by His gift of a mother with His gift of love in His gift of her eyes, is the same God who will look on you as that race finally ends."If you're looking for a list, move on. If you're hoping for 1-2-3 or A-B-C, this isn't the book for you. But if you're intrigued by well-written short stories which covertly sneak past your defenses and explode with mirth and meaning, pick up a copy of "Death by Living." Your story will be the better for it.

I'm an N. D. Wilson fan. I raved about Notes from a Tilt-a-Whirl and was eager to read Death by Living. If you love Wilson, Death by Living won't disappoint. It's more of the same joyful, all of life Christian worldview. It's vivid imagery, poignant snark, and exuberant faith in the God who created all and ordains all will excite to live to die.He takes you on an adventure. He tells the story of his grandfather who fought in World War II, almost died on multiple occasions, and loved evangelism. He shows how living always leads to death, and death is a gift for the living.Within the framework of his grandfather's life, he encourages, admonitions, and prods us to be grateful for everything we have. He points out how God acts providentially on our behalf and how we have a thousand things daily to be grateful for. He recommends slowing down and considering each of these when we're tempted to feel sorry for ourself. In the same vein, he joyful embraces God's sovereignty over all of life. He shows how God is sovereign when he saved his grandfather from being killed by a bomb in WWII, and, also, when a friend died when taking a post in the military unexpectedly from a friend. God gives and He takes away. Bless him. He also aptly notes how often "God calls our bluffs and makes narrative hypocrites of us all" (40).What I appreciated most was the way Wilson took something that's emphasized ad nauseum (life as story. I frequently talk this way) today and makes it fresh. We often tire of truth because it's told so poorly. Wilson thrives as storyteller, but also has the chops to deliver on the theology, worldview, and philosophy behind it all. That's what makes this book enjoyable. It's not your average philosophy book. It's not your average theology book. And it's not your average story-telling book. It's the delightful cocktail of an expert mixologist.

Bubonic Panic: When Plague Invaded America, by Gail Jarrow

From School Library Journal

Gr 5 Up—With a mesmerizing description of the suffering endured by bubonic plague victims, followed by several fascinatingly gruesome photographs depicting visible signs of the disease, Jarrow hooks readers from the start. This final installment of the author's "Deadly Disease" trilogy is as compelling as the first two titles, Red Madness: How a Medical Mystery Changed What We Eat (2014) and Fatal Fever: Tracking Down Typhoid Mary (2015, both Boyds Mills). Before describing the chaos the plague wrought on American shores, Jarrow recounts major plague outbreaks throughout history as well as early bacteriological advances, such as the identification by French scientist Alexandre Yersin of the microbe responsible for the bubonic plague. The plague arrived in the port city of San Francisco in 1900 and claimed its first victim in Chinatown, a neighborhood near the wharves. Chinatown was quickly quarantined by the Board of Health, but with California Governor Henry T. Gage denying the existence of plague and Chinese officials bucking against perceived discrimination, tensions rose and containment efforts failed. Eventually Rupert Blue of the Marine-Hospital Service was brought in by the surgeon general to control the outbreak. When the plague returned to San Francisco in 1907 after the devastating earthquake of 1906, Blue came back. By this time scientists had determined that the fleas on rats were responsible for transmitting the plague, and the city mobilized to curtail the rat population, successfully containing the outbreak in a matter of months. Weaving in numerous photographs and newspaper clippings, Jarrow tells an absorbing story. VERDICT Nonfiction that reads like a thriller—not to be missed.—Ragan O'Malley, Saint Ann's School, Brooklyn, NY

Review

* "Jarrow's detailed narrative and attention to the stories of the medical figures involved make this compelling reading. As in the previous volumes, the level of research on display is impressive… The large number of photographs and illustrations enhances the text, and the layout is graphically interesting without becoming distracting…. A richly detailed exploration of a fascinating subject." —Kirkus Reviews, starred review* "With a mesmerizing description of the suffering endured by bubonic plague victims, followed by several fascinatingly gruesome photographs depicting visible signs of the disease, Jarrow hooks readers from the start. This final installment of the author’s “Deadly Disease” trilogy is as compelling as the first two titles… Weaving in numerous photographs and newspaper clippings, Jarrow tells an absorbing story. Nonfiction that reads like a thriller—not to be missed." —School Library Journal, starred review * Jarrow concludes her Deadly Diseases trilogy with a harrowing, in-depth exploration of the reappearance of bubonic plague at the turn of the 20th century…. her gripping narrative balances the clock-racing work of scientists and officials attempting to understand and stop the plague with entwined themes of fear, prejudice, and anger…. Extensively researched, with numerous resources for readers looking to study the topic further." —Publishers Weekly, starred review"Jarrow looks at plague throughout history and medical research into its causes, before zeroing in on its resurgence in the late nineteenth century, when it arose in Asia and reached Honolulu…. Thoroughly researched and clearly presented, the text offers a direct window into the period. The intertwined themes of prejudice against Asian Americans, public health officials hampered by politicians, and mistrust of scientific research… make the story complex, revealing a good deal about human nature as well as the period and the disease itself…. An informative book on an unusual topic." —Booklist “The bubonic plague, or Black Death, seems conveniently trapped in history books, confined to Europe in the Middle Ages, where it famously killed a good portion of the population. In her third and final book in the Deadly Diseases trilogy (Red Madness, 2014; Fatal Fever, rev. 3/15), Jarrow covers that territory quickly before bringing us into the nineteenth century, where the plague continued to rear its ugly head in places like Hong Kong, Bombay (Mumbai), Honolulu, and finally San Francisco--where it first appeared in Chinatown in 1900…. Jarrow's treatment here is once again thorough and fascinating… an exemplary contribution to the genre of the history of science and medicine.” —The Horn Book

This is a large book--and filled with lots of "news stories," photos, captions, etc. I was sort of expecting more of a historical non-fiction read for YA...but I think we'll get a lot of of these pages.

This is a very informative book that is useful when studying about the bubonic plague. This book deserve this rating for clearly explaining every part of the story based on the bubonic plague. The book was amazingly written.

Good item

I would recommend this book to others interested in the medical field, specifically in epidemiology. I enjoyed this book immensely.

4.5 stars rounded up to 5. Gail Jarrow hits you over the head within the first few pages with an image of physical expression of plague. It's morbidly mesmerizing because it is hard to believe that a tiny microscopic entity can wreck this much havoc on a human body within days. I honestly prepared myself for a gruesome account of how disease progresses anatomically and infects thousands, but instead I got surprisingly fast and engrossing narrative about history of plague and dramatic circumstances of fighting to rid of it. If you've been put off by that first picture - worry not, that's as graphic as the book gets. The rest of the photos dedicated to carry visual support of the fight against pestilence. Photographs of the aftermath of San Francisco earthquake are especially striking and powerful. (I did not know that on top of dealing with rebuilding people had to deal with plague epidemic at the time). As a matter of fact, the whole book is full of facts and events that I haven't heard about before - even though plague is something that most everyone is at least remotely aware of. "Bubonic Panic" leads you through the evolution of disease, all along showing you the spectacular sacrifices and first-class drama all the scientists/researchers (all involved, really) had to go through to prove any little find. The fact that so many people bluntly REFUSED to believe in existence of plague even presented with conclusive results of doctors is still mind-boggling! I've never thought that I can call a non-fiction book about plague thrilling, but there is no way around it - you'll be very involved! I've never read Gail Jarrow before (and now I intend to read the rest of her deadly diseases trilogy), but I can't praise this book high enough. The research is thorough, the photographs are plentiful and invoking; and the narrative is superbly paced. The only reason I rated it 4.5 stars instead of 5 is the fact that this book only briefly refers to "drugs made in 1940s" that helped increase survival rate and significantly helped in treatment of plague cases. Considering the fact that a good portion of the book was spent on the race between scientists to determine the cause of the disease and finding a vaccine (with a lot of names and descriptions), I was slightly disappointed not to dedicate a special chapter on who, how and when discovered what was to be the crucial point in plague treatment. It might have made book a little lengthier, but I felt like that was too important of a point not to highlight. Other than that personal nitpick of mine, I believe everyone should own a book that manages to explain such a deadly part of our history in such an accessible and entertaining manner. I usually have a hard time with dry academic texts, so "Bubonic Panic" is what constitutes a perfect little book for me that delivers detailed research and photographic history with such an engaging narrative. It goes straight to my personal library.Watch out for rat fleas and Happy Reading!

This was a page-turner. Less about the science of the plague bacteria and more about the history of communities that were impacted by the plague and how organizations/institutions of government/individuals worked tirelessly exploring, discovering, combating, eradicating the plague. Each contributor played a critical role in moving the world forward in saving its citizens from the plague. Jarrow’s writing synthesizes the stories of these people, seamlessly, into a cohesive narrative of what happened and is still happening because the plague still plagues us! As I read this, I envisioned middle school classrooms – language arts or social studies or an ambitious science teacher—providing space for student-led discussions around larger themes of perseverance, collaboration, global citizenship, displacement, compassion, racism, humanitarianism. Looking forward to reading Jarrow’s Red Madness and Fatal Fever. This might make for an interesting text set in a language arts classroom that is partnering with a science or content area classroom. Questions related to the science of the plague could also be used to launch research...

Besides the fact that you can’t eat while you read this I don’t have any criticisms of this book. I think it’s an excellent addition to any history curriculum. If you are reading through history on a four-year cycle, you could add it late in year 2 or anytime in year three. The history of the plague is interesting in that all the historical documentation matches what scientists today see when they observe patients in our modern times. I guess even ancient people knew that there was no “spinning” this into something it wasn’t. Without spoilers I can tell you that the plague is just as scary as you think it is.Equal amounts science and history in a readable narrative format it makes a subject which could be a boring list of facts become engaging in a gross and creepy way. Future scientists will be engaged and every reader will be informed.Side note- If you’ve read Kristin Lavransdatter this book really explains the science behind the plot.I borrowed this book from the Chicago public library in order to judge it for the 2016 Cybils Awards.
