This book is a page turner. I've read many books on the subject matter and this one grabs and keeps your attention, Facts about the subject matter, the exorcism, and those who do battle with evil are very informative, This is not the movie, it is better. What is so good about the book besides the story, is Taylor's processing of the information as if he is deciding what to think himself about what he is telling. What to believe and not to. All I can tell you Troy, you're are right. Once you know about them........they know about you. I know because I write about the subject matter too.I'm not a grammar cop, so the typos, which are not the author's fault as far as I can see, don't bother me. The trip Taylor takes you on is well worth the occasional spelling error. Ranks up there with the best of the books on Exorcism.

This review is for The Devil Came to St. Louis Paperback.I just finished reading this for a class I am enrolled in. The book itself is not bad, if you’re into exorcisms and other forms of horror stories. Being from the St. Louis area, the story is rather interesting. I had not known that the Exorcist movie was based on the events described in this book. The writing is rather poor though. There are often misspellings or misuse of grammar. Over all, I do not think I would recommend this book. If you really need another book about exorcisms to read, then okay, it is worth it. If you are looking for a page turner you won’t want to put down, look somewhere else.

The great story within this book is obscured by numerous misspellings, typos and mal-formed sentences. In some places this is so poorly constructed that the intended meaning of a sentence or paragraph is entirely lost. I think the the research scholarship is likely accurate, the documentation sufficient and the story itself fascinating. If the subject truly interests you, read the book.

At least for me, I read this book with the lights out hoping to be scared, but the only thing that scared me was the lack of proof reading and editing. Don't get me wrong,I love Troy Taylor and the subject matter has intrigued me for some time (being minutes from downtown St. Louis) but it really didn't scare me. It just made me question further the validity of the exorcism story of 1949.

Very in depth detail and Troy has always gone into every situation as a skeptic! The end will terrify you!

This book is fantastic for this summer! My kids tend to forget a lot because they are too busy playing during the summer months and this book has proven to be the perfect instrument to help me keep them in the game and refresh their memory as well as get ready for the next school year. I love the fact that I can use this book on my phone or tablet with my son or so he thinks that he's just playing a game with me which keeps his mind off of the fact that he's doing actual work.

Slightly overpriced for the amount of content it contains. Would be better at $15. However, a good training aid and very well laid out.

This book, along with other Michio Kaku books have completely changed my perspective on the universe down to it's very fundamentals. This is one of the easier reads, in terms of just mental processing, but if you enjoy this book, I'd highly recommend Michio Kaku's book "Hyperspace".This did more for me than my first three college courses on physics, just saying that right now.

"In principle the ramjet engine could propel itself indefinitely, ultimately reaching distant star systems in the galaxy ... In theory, the spacecraft might be able to reach the limit of the visible universe within the lifetime of the crew member (although billions of years might have passed on Earth). ‒ from PHYSICS OF THE IMPOSSIBLE"... a universe in which left and right are reversed, matter turns into antimatter, and time runs backward is a fully acceptable universe obeying the laws of physics!" ‒ from PHYSICS OF THE IMPOSSIBLEPHYSICS OF THE IMPOSSIBLE is a speculative work on the possibility (or not) of realizing what the current state of the Science of Physics considers impossible. Its author, Michio Kaku, is a theoretical physicist who helped define String Theory. On the other hand, physics and differential calculus quickly phasered my desire to become an aeronautical engineer back in the 60s. Class III (perpetual motion machines and precognition) violates the known laws of physics and would require a paradigmatic shift.Most important to my appreciation of the subject matter, the author explains everything ‒ or nearly everything ‒ at a level that can be (mostly) understood by us Just Folks who could barely manipulate a slide rule back in the day. And except, as I recall, only one or two mentions of Einstein's famous E = (m) (c squared), he doesn't speak in equations at all.Granted, when Kako starts in about the eleven dimensions and multiverses allowed for by String Theory, the subject matter perhaps recedes over my comprehension's event horizon, but I figure he's allowed. He's earned it.One can only imagine the advances in physics since this book was copyrighted in 2008. Can Scotty now beam me up, I wonder?As with The Hidden Reality: Parallel Universes and the Deep Laws of the Cosmos by Brian Greene, PHYSICS OF THE IMPOSSIBLE will perhaps open-up the reader's mind to a sense of wonder. Ever since the Caveman first gazed up into the night sky uncontaminated by any light and thought "Dude!", such a mental epiphany is an experience to be savored.

The Physics of the Impossible was one of the best books I have ever read.Dr. Michio Kaku takes the reader on a journey from what is possible with the physics of today to what may be accomplished in the future, like time travel, invisibility, teleportation, faster than light travel, etc. He presents a detailed account of string theory, robotics, anti-gravity and phasers that make it easy for those who do not have a background in physics to understand.

You know how people always ask, "If you could sit down and have dinner with anyone, alive or dead, who would you pick and why?" Yeah, yeah, everybody picks Lincoln or Jesus.Me? I'd pick Michio Kaku. This guy is phenomenal! I'd love to sit down across the table from him, ply him whatever libations he prefers and then let him verbally go to town while I sit there and listen to him and occasionally interject asking questions.For this man to be able to not only explain previous futuristic predictions made by his predecessors with ease and an astutely keen perception of where they were correct and incorrect, but to also be able to go into such great detail about what's to come, based upon where we are now and where we've come from, it's actually something marvel over as you roll around what he's written in your brain and let it sink in.If you have ANY interest in physics or even just in the progress of mankind -- past, present and future -- this book will not disappoint.

The approach Kaku has taken with this book is very good. He has different ratings for (im)possibility: 1. possible, but existing technology is not quite there yet 2. could be possible if a new form of technology that we do not know of could be developed 3. not possible with our known laws of physics.He also rates different kinds of civilizations based on their access to energy. A type 1 is for instance a civilization that is able to harness most of the power of the earth; a type 2 most of the power of the sun; a type 3 most of the power of the galaxy etc.He uses the latest knowledge of physics to comment on cases ranging from time travel, force fields, anti-gravity and so forth. In each case he gives the (im)possibility rating and type of civilization he expects would be able to realize it. Watching sci-fi after reading this book will be different indeed, you will be able to jeer or praise the stories with much more authority.

Clarke)-- and I often walk the razor's edge between wondering how much of this is 'magic' and how much 'could be' science. This book helps in that quest. This doesn't detract from the read--it does, however, take away some of the novelty.As I believe " science fiction ... contains elements of known, extrapolation of known or logical theoretical science" -- I find myself going back to from time to time to re-read parts of this book as I continue to walk the journey of the razor's edge.It's an easy read and a must for any die hard science fiction fan--unless, of course, you follow John W. Campbell's infamous "Science fiction is what I say it is."

In December, 1945, an Arab peasant discovered ancient documents near the town of Nag Hammadi. These represent 52 texts of Gnostic works, such as the "Gospel of Thomas," the "Gospel of Philip," the "Gospel of Truth," and so on. The actual works were dated at 350-400 AD, with the likelihood that they were authored by 120-150 AD.Elaine Pagels does a very nice job of describing the historical context of these documents and the controversy that they engendered in the early Christian era. The early Church leaders worked as hard as they could to suppress and destroy these documents. And, indeed, there was much at stake, as Pagels discusses the matter. Early orthodox Christians denounced these texts as heresy.Among the central issues that divided orthodox Christians from Gnostics included:1. The resurrection of Jesus Christ: Orthodox Christians define it literally as arising from death; Gnostics had another perspective. Also, Christians defined the leaders of the church as the Apostles and their successors; Gnostics demurred.2. Orthodox Christians saw the church hierarchically--religious leaders and then the rank-and-file church members; Gnostics rejected a Church leadership interposed between God and the people.3. Orthodox Christians trended to denigrate women; Gnostics saw God as both male and female.4. And so on.Pagels notes that (page 147): ". . .the discoveries at Nag Hammadi reopen fundamental questions. They suggest that Christianity might have developed in very different directions. . . ."Whatever one might think about the specific points of the Gnostics themselves, Pagels' book does a fine job of outlining what the key differences were between Gnostics and Orthodox Christians. For those wanting to understand the issues at stake in the early differences within Christianity, this is an accessible text and well worth looking at.

I read this years ago right after graduating from high school. This book was a life changer for me. I was heavily indoctrinated in the Catholic church and felt that by even reading this book and daring to speculate about its contents that the church roof would fall in on my head the next time I went to church. Although it was close to heresy for me to read about the early formation of the church, the good news is that I'm still here! The roof did not cave in on me and I continue to be fascinated with the line between historical, man-made doctrine and what went into the Bible as we know it now. Gnostic gospels takes the nag hammadi (sp) scrolls and shows that there were many gospels around the time of Christ. The fact that these gospels were jarred up and buried shows that they were not the favored gospels and possession was tantamount to death. Why were they different? Is it because these gospels talked about finding God within instead of using the priestly class as intermediaries? Or perhaps it was because this group of gospels treated women equal with men? Both concepts were diametrically opposed to the books that survived. So what else is there in these books and how exactly does a religion founded in blood, and reinforced by crusades and inquisitions further the true message of God? This book is a good place to start answering questions like that. Everyone will have their own opinion, but at least by reading the book it will be an informed decision.

All of my life I have felt that something important was missing from my relationship with God. Reading this work helped me to fill in the holes that orthodox Christianity built deep inside. Call it The Mysterys, call it gnosis. Call it what you will, but I found myself and my God when I read this work.

I began this book with a fascination for the ancient Minoan civilization, a keen interest in with the people and cultures of the eastern Mediterranean, and knowing virtually nothing about Gnosticism. What an enlightening and enjoyable book the author has produced. The book is based upon her interpretations of fragments of early texts, written in Coptic during the first two hundred years following the crucifixion. Pagels summarizes not just the writings of these early spiritual leaders, but also the social and political issues of the day.The Gnostic texts, discovered in 1948 buried in a remote Egyptian cave, describe a spiritual tradition of meditation, inner visions, and self-discovery, rather than a quest for salvation. The author's translation and interpretation from the Gospel of Thomas follows: "There is light within a man of light, and it lights up the whole world. If he does not shine, he is darkness."In Pagels' reconstruction of the period, another profound distinction between the Gnostics and the orthodox view that became the Roman Catholic church, was the participation of women and men as equals in their religious traditions. Mary Magdalen as apostle, is the prominent example. The texts describe God in both masculine and feminine terms with a complementary description of human nature. The book is a fascinating look into the founders and the founding of Christianity.

Morgan is a compilation of classic hymns that includes the music, words and story behind the song.The book is divided into sections that include Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving and Favorites. On one side of the page is the music and words, and on the other side is the story and some fun facts behind the hymn. There are also some Biblical quotations upon which the hymn is based.Not having any background in music, and being rather ignorant of most history, I found the information included to be both interesting and entertaining.This would be a nice gift for a Sunday school teacher, music or choir teacher. The book itself has a neat finish to the pages, they're sort of rumply and ragged.I gave this 4 of 5 stars because I didn't care for the way the book was organized. I didn't understand why Christmas was at the front or how some of the "favorites" were chosen.Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free for review from BookSneeze, a blogger program. This book was exactly what I expected! The hymns are printed on the left-hand page with the song's origin on the right. The quality is great as well - it has a silky cover with the bookmarking flaps. My husband and I purchased it as a Mother's Day gift for his mom and I almost didn't want to give it up...

Print version is great! Print gets 5 stars. DIGITAL GETS 2 STARS because the digital version is not especially useful when I’m trying to read the music as I sing.HERE’S WHY: The words and music are presented as sheet music, but each line is a separate image. If I enlarge the first line of words and music so I can read them in Kindle on my iPad mini, when I get to the end of the line I must then close that image and go through the process of enlarging the next line. I find that starting and stopping like that creates frustration and eliminates the pleasure of singing the hymn. I tried enlarging the font, which, predictably, did not affect the images containing sheet music.AS A CUMBERSOME WORK-AROUND, I just now spent some time fiddling with options for ZOOM under ACCESSIBILITY, which is in GENERAL in the SETTINGS app on the iOS 11.2.0. Within the Kindle app, I switched to one-column view, and then with the ZOOM control, I RESIZED THE LENS to include all images of the desired sheet music, and adjusted magnification accordingly. This way I can comfortably sing the entire hymn without interruption. HOWEVER, since I am not visually impaired, I do not need the “zoomer” active ALL the time, so I will need to turn it on in settings before I use the digital hymnal, and then turn it off again afterward. Not a terribly huge deal, I think, but I feel such gyrations shouldn’t be necessary for someone with normal vision, and it may become more trouble to me than it’s worth. They can do better. I’ll try the zoomer for a while to see what I think of it.

I noticed this book on a book rack in my grocery store - just when I was in need of a gift for a friend who was in rehab. Since my friend is a retired pastor, I thought reading about the hymns he is so familiar with would be perfect. This week I received a thank you note from his wife who is finding "Then Sings My Soul" something they can share, but she also uses it for her private devotions. Behind each of the "old" hymns is a story of human experience - sorrow, joy, life changing trials, and the reader is inspired, encouraged, and has new appreciation for each hymn. I have since used this book as a perfect gift for those who are shut-in, going through difficult times, and those who simply love the hymns. Each page includes the music, verses and the story - just right for a devotional book or to use as a program for a group.

Purchased as a required book for our homeschool curriculum this coming year. Each hymn has a two page spread: one with sheet music and another with a brief explanation how the hymn came to be. Many hymns were unfamiliar to me, so I am looking forward to learning them. A companion cd would have been a nice addition.

I was disappointed with this book. I expected the story behind the song, but for the most part it was a short biographical sketch of the songs author. The generic statement "it was during this time he(she) penned this hymn" was used repeatedly and did nothing to tie the hymn to a specific time or experience in the authors life.

This book gives fascinating and often inspiring insights into the history of many favorite old hymns of the church and I have enjoyed learning many of those stories. I knocked a couple stars off my review, however, because of the publisher's choice of binding. While the spine-binding seems to be very solidly done, the page edges are rough and uneven. While this may yield the feel of an "old book" I find it distracting and difficult to use when thumbing through the pages.
