I gave 4 stars to this book, because the author is not reflecting the reality of clinical practice. For example, students who have good academic grades necessarily would succeed in clinical settings. From my practice, it is opposite -they get lost, and have problems to connect the academic knowledge with hand on experience. For that reason it seems to me that the author has very minimal practical and clinical experience that leads to misinforming students, professors and instructors about evaluation process.

Great buy. Very helpful for those in school to become a nurse educator or nursing professor. Goes into details about both classroom testing strategies as well as clinical evaluation methods.

Very useful book. I am enrolled in a Master's of Nursing Education program which required this.

although out-dated only in that there are always new varieties being introduced annually, there still remains an enormous amount of excellent detailed basic plant structure, growth and performance information that is so very useful whether you are considering a single or multiple hydrangeas. Though there will always be a 'new' color to consider, the basic knowledge within these pages is so beneficial.

I'm a big gardener, and as gardeners know, if you are working with a new genus or group of plants, you really need a specialized book, with good photos. This is when the "Gardening Encyclopedia" simply won't do. I recently moved to the No. Georgia mountains, and this is "Hydrandea Heaven", a group of plants I knew little about. Already, I have several types, and needed information. This book is clear, complete and practical, and has taught me all I need to know. It's now in my gardening shelf and I've not only read it, but refer to it quite often, along with others I have on my other favorites such as one on lilies, another on azaleas, etc. If you're "into" hydrangeas, you need this book.

If you love hydrangeas, look no further because this is THE BOOK to buy. I have become something of a hydrangea enthusiast, but I have a lot to learn when it comes to plant care and varieties. After an exhaustive search for the right guide, I was discussing different hydrangea varieties with the owner of a local nursery. She pulled out her well worn copy of this book, and together we came up with a long list of varieties for me to add to my wish list. I ordered this book the minute I got home, and I haven't been disappointed. My favorite thing about this book is its varieties list in the back. This is incredibly helpful if you're looking for particular colors, types, etc. This book also discusses general care, soil pH, plant division, and pretty much anything else you'd want to know about hydrangeas.

I had the same reaction that Newton did to both this book andDirr's book on viburnums. There is a wealth of information available in the book but it is so bogged down by it's unorganized presentation that it's very hard to sift through. At times the writing seems very much like a copy of the writers journal notes. A good tech editor and better organization is definitely needed.I was disappointed to find that the book has so many plant discussions on the macrophyllas but limited information on arborescens and serrata. Being a novice with hydrangeas it's difficult to determine if this because there are limited cultivars of arborescens & serrata, if I'm just so bogged down in the information presented & not finding it, or if this is only because as the writer pointed out, macrophyllas are his favorite.Last I think it's great that Dirr included information on the breeding history of some of the crosses that lead to the cultivars we see today, but I think it's not useful in this book. Maybe as a article in a scholarly journal would be better.I am still sifting through this book, and may possibly update this review. But right about now I am glad that I purchased the book used instead of at full price.

Dr. Dirr's books are always great additions to the library: well presented, graphically excellent, and with good information. As I have said with others of his books, I personally consider them to be additions to rather than a foundation for a good library on gardening. These are books that I like to own and find them to be wonderful, appreciated gifts for my Master Gardening friends. Many of his books have been written some time ago and I think that the publisher has changed. Dirr mentions the availability of a vast picture trove he took for this book. It does not appear to be available and he is not to be found, at least in my searches. If an extra book is in your budget, a book by Dirr will not disappoint.

I'm a professional gardener with a horticulture background and it was so refreshing to hear Michael Dirr's evaluations of the different hydrangea species and cultivars. The gardens I care for have some dense plantings of hydrangeas and I picked this book up to get me excited about taking care of them again. In alot of ways this book was successful. Its helpful in some general identification of different cultivars and it discusses the pros and cons of different varieties. It was good to read something that had opinions and some science to back it up too.

Avoid this terrible book. It is garbage. I'm disappointed I never got around to returning it in time. SO MANY TYPOS AND MISTAKES! Really not helpful at all. The material it covers is all in paragraph form and not very easy to study from, it might as well be a poorly written text book. Don't waste the money on this.

Don't buy this book. Outdated. Gives you tips that are illegal in test centers.

This book is extremely informative, and overall I found it a great read. It is not comprehensive of the inner workings, so do not just purchase this book and expect to jump right into Linux and start building embedded systems. You would need to know something about Linux before you start. There are a lot of books out there to get you started in Linux, so I will not cover them here.Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone looking to get into embedded Linux systems, or Android, because you need to be able to boot Linux on your embedded device to port over Android.I cannot wait for the author to come out with his next book on building embedded Android systems. I put it in my cart around October. Maybe it will come out soon......

This book is not for novices. You will need to be familiar with embedded systems and Linux previous to reading it, but once the prerequisites are met, this book serves as a great resource.

Very pleased with the delivery time and with the product quality.

There is some good information in here, and some valuable resources, but the writing style seems more like a novel to me than technical literature. There seems to be some gaps, and a lack of in depth knowledge. I did not get what I wanted out of this book, so I will be trying another author.

I've been an embedded software engineer for years, but I haven't done all the different parts of a project. There's always someone else who does the bootloader, or writes a particular class of driver. When a coworker loaded my his copy of Building Embedded Linux Systems, I jumped at the chance to learn some of those areas where my experience did not reach. Within a few days I ordered my own copy and I'm in the middle of reading it. This book has just the right balance of high-level organization information with low-level, how to do it, details. Excellent book.

I'm a beginner in embedded development on Linux. I find the book very good. It's compact, very well written and has detailed descriptions of the procedures to building embedded Linux systems.

It's clear the author is very talented. The book was pretty boring. Any good Linux reference can give the same information with "all" the options not just those the author used. I found "How LINUX works" by Brian Ward much more useful, and informative.The front page says "Concepts, Techniques, TRICKS and traps. I don't feel this was accomplished. I was dissatisfied with the book. It was more of a documentary of a special software project that the author was involved in and will be of limited value to most embedded users.

I could to do many modifications in my project with this book. This is a book to read page-at-page, I'm really pleased!

I'm a barnaholic. Every age, style, purpose, architecture. I find them great statements of the ingenuity and practical nature of man throughout the ages to house and protect their livestock and livelihood. Eric Sloane's work is a masterpiece because he really gets into the architecture and art of barns. A look at the tools, techniques, structures and uses can all be had in many other books - but tied together here with outstanding illustrations which can show so much more than photos could capture, makes An Age of Barns a must-have classic if you're thinking about building your own barn or just can't get enough of these icons of agriculture.The paperback reprint would have been OK (I've seen it and it's fine) but this original hardcover really captures all the original nuances of Sloane's work and is a lasting testament to the lasting structures he filled it with.

If you're from a rural area or reared on the farm, you'll love this book. You'll love it even if your only connection is a love of architecture and old buildings. I've loaned this to many friends who found it as interesting as I did. Both the architectural and construction aspects of the book are great but add in some of the history that is shared and this is a wonderful coffee table volume. Add it to your collection.

When Eric Sloane wrote this book in the 1950's, the United States had already made the transition from being an agricultural nation into an industrial society. Fortunately, there were still plenty of examples of America's rural past scattered along the backroads and other forgotten areas of the nation's countryside. Sloane spent many years, seeking out these historic relics so that he could study and sketch them. The result is whole series of books that chronicle America's historic material culture. This book focuses on barns.What makes an Eric Sloane book so unforgetable are the black and white sketches. If you are a visual learner who believes a good drawing is worth a thousand words, Eric Sloane is the author for you. By no means is this an academic study of the different barn styles that existed in the United States. Instead this book is a collection of beautiful drawings that can help the reader understand how barns were built and what they were used for. This is a magical book. If you like it, you will have many hours of pleasure seeking out and reading Eric Sloane's other books. Highly recommended. A great value.

Sloane's books capture the romanticism of the past better than any picture books, and that is certainly true for his An Age of Barns. The beautiful line drawings range from evocative perspectives to working sections, giving you a good idea of how these barns worked. There are Shaker round barns, traditional gambrel barns, Amish barn raisings and a wide variety of outbuildings associated with the early American farmstead. He lovingly focuses on hinge details, stairs and ventilation openings. Sloane's eye never missed a detail, and for anyone who loves old barns this is the book to get.

If you are interested in older barns, this book gives a nice brief insight into how they were made and how they were used. I like seeing and identifying the various types of barns I grew up around. Very interesting, and a good addition to any bookshelf.

We know only a few of the names of early Americans who settled this fertile country as farmers, woodsmen, carpenters, blacksmiths, and other important skills, all of whom were respectors of the land. Eric Sloan illustrates with pen and ink, a masterpiece of information on the types of barns our ancestors built and used.. With adze, saw, froe and maul, early on they built barns with logs cunninly constructed with notched corners. Later more complex, multi-bay timbered marvels were erected on a weekend by an army of neighbors at a Barn Raising Bee. How it was done is a visual feast. The beer, to quench their thirsts, was cooled in a small barn - a Spring House.

A good book to understand the evolution of today's immigration law.Americans might be under the perception that until recently, we have always closely guarded our borders and regulated entrants who mostly "came here legally" by adhering to immigration law.But as Salyer's work points out, America's immigration law developed over time. She uses the experience of immigration law vis-a-vis Chinese immigrants in the late 1800s to make a couple points. First, immigration law within the context of regulatory agencies responsible for its administration, arose in the late 1800s. Second, that early regulation was aimed at keeping out ethnically or socially undesirable groups like the Chinese, who were otherwise migrating in accordance with American practice. And finally, that the expansion of immigration regulation was based upon the Chinese experience and soon applied to other less-than-desirable groups.Laws Harsh as Tigers gives a revealing look at the rise of immigration law. It forces us to rethink the idea of "sovereign borders" and to reflect back on when immigration was part of the common law. Only later did the idea of an administrative system, largely separated from and independent of, the court system, develop. With this, the American government gained much power to formulate, administer and interpret immigration law--as the author would argue, to the detriment of the rights of immigrants.In the first part, the book provides a look into how Chinese immigrants faced new restrictions and how they fought back using the courts. Eventually new laws and self-guided administrative procedures restricted this route to them. The second part of the book catalogs the development of administrative law in immigration. It shows how immigration restrictionists, often those within the immigration bureaucracy itself, used the powers of administration to shape immigration.Both halves should give the reader insight into the creation of immigration law, the emergence of restrictive immigration policy, and how both fit into the expansion of the national government in the late 1800s and early/mid 1900s.

This is the definitive history of the legal struggle against the Chinese Exclusion laws that banned almost all Chinese nationals from entering the United States between 1882 and 1943. It shows the racist underpinnings of the legal doctrine that today that limits rights of all of us, citizens and non-citizens at the border. At the same time, it shows the power of an organized legal resistance, and the ways the judicial branch maintained its adherence to the rule of law in the face of bigotry. Salyer documents that Chinese brought over 7,000 cases challenging the laws and their implementation in the first decade of exclusion, and were so successful that Congress ultimately stripped courts of the power to review many exclusion decisions. As--or more--relevant to current political and legal fights as when it was published, this is a must read for those interested in immigration, law, policy, and democracy.
