Hambly's James Asher series are all a cracking good read complete with memorable characters, historical detail and suspenseful action. But what gives them gravitas beyond the usual vampire story are the moral and ethical themes that underpin the tales.For a slightly different edge, it is Lydia who away from home initiates this adventure and Asher, laid low with illness who is at home in Oxford. World War 1 is in its second year and Lydia (shadowed by her pale guardian, Don Simon Ysidro) is at the front working at an advanced medical station. Lydia and Simon notice evidence of the "Others" that they encountered in Peking and relay the information home to James. Drawn into the investigation, James encounters these creatures in London.As expected, the historical background is accurate and engrossing.( I checked Maconochies war time stew and the St Pancras workhouse). Her descriptions of The Western Front give a genuine, pervasive horror to Lydia's situation. It intensifies when Hambly makes the logical conclusion that with all this misery and easy death, of course, vampires would be attracted to the battlefield. These vampires are not noble or glittery or nice. They are self-centred, cruel and childish in their simplistic view of the world. But even they can be enticed to help when their lives are at risk.The moral choices that Lydia, James and even Simon make are mirrored by the limited self-serving actions of Crowell, Francesca and Grippen. Perhaps the heart breaking and human decisions of the Irish nurse Meagher, and Dr. Lemoine reflect the choice of most of us. I cannot condemn their choice as I wonder what mine may have been.Finishing this book in a rush was like emerging from a black, dank hole. I was relieved to emerge into my clean safe world, but I would not miss this experience for anything.

Barbara Hambly is articulate and a wonderful story teller. A joy to read. I hope she is able to follow the adventures of James, Lydia, and Don Simon for many more years. Maybe Miranda will have adventures also.

I love Hambly's Asher series. If you're into vampires and haven't read "Those Who Hunt the Night", you're missing a classic. This latest book is set in the trench warfare of WW1 and includes misguided scientists, vicious vamps, and undercover intrigue. I read Hambly's books because of 2 things: she assumes women are capable of multiple roles and she does her historical research for great background flavor.

I love Barbara Hambly‘s James Asher Vampire Novel series and look forward to each new story. This one set during WW 1’s trench warfare is a disturbing setting but the storyline premise is truly horrific. Excellent scary storytelling that brings up questions about the morality of war and lesser of evils. Looking forward to another novel in this excellent series.

Hambly one again crafts a delectable tale, this time of vampires at the front in World War one. Her incomparable prose and brilliant characterization effortlessly transport the reader to the last spring of the war, when an inspired doctor and a desperate vampire collude to meld the Unliving and the Undead into a fearsome army to win the war for England and France. James and Lydia Asher with the enigmatic Don Simon Ysidro predict a different result of the release of hordes of revenants in the trenches, endless war and horrors undreamed. Together they seek to eliminate the spawning nightmare.

Only Hambly can get this much historical context in a vampire mystery, while revealing how vile and useless the entirety of WWI really was. Brilliant, a little sad, and truly excellent writing.

Set against the early stages of the Great War. Raises the question of the vampires vs. the evil of man.

I enjoy Hambly's vampire series - and it's interesting now that it's happening during WW1, with all the complications and opportunities that setting provides.

These volumes are excellent for those who are beyond beginner status but not yet "grizzled" expert. In other words, one who is comfortable with buying grade "A" leather and making the sheaths with little waste. Likewise, I would not recommend for the beginner unless one is adept at tooling, dyeing, cutting, skiving, sewing, template usage, pattern making,etc.Knowledge of tools and techniques are essential in making the sheaths. For instance, the first project, The Mexican Loop Sheath, is somewhat complex. 29 materials and 24 tools are necessary for the project- although veteran leathercrafters probably might use fewer materials and tools depending on the level of expertise. However, I would take seriously the ability to use the plastic templates for measuring and drawing, as well as having elementary arithmatic skills. As metal and woodworkers know, correct measurements count. Leathercrafting is no exception. And every leathercrafter beyond the beginner level knows, a slight mm or inch off makes quite a difference in the project's finished appearance. But eventually when one feels comfortable using tools as an extension of one's hand, project's like this become less complex, and quite enjoyable. I love making sheaths because I love the huge variety of knives available. And if one is or decides to become a knife maker, making sheaths is an added benefit. I'm looking forward to Volume 4. These books are very leathercrafter-friendly, and I'd recommend all volumes as an addition to your library as a fast and valuable resource. The book came in good condition and looked very nice, the old Gothel on the hardcover is a nice touch. The story itself I have mixed feelings about.The story was interesting and I was excited to know more about Gothel's past. If it wasn't attached to the Tangled story and had a different end, it would have actually been an amazing book in my opinion.I personally think they messed with the story and character in a way I didn't like. Sure you don't know MUCH about Gothel from the movie but this book made her insane and completely unattached.Everything was decent enough until it caught up to the movie part. Where these odd sister's were narrating parts of what happens in the movie but in a way also almost mocking it. I didn't like that. I would have liked to see Gothel's point of view in those moments instead of boring narration from these sisters that honestly became very annoying to me. The end just fell apart for me.

This was much more detailed and thought provoking than I had imagined!when I bought this book,I expected it to be a childs tale, but I was so wrong. It was much more complicated than i thought, but not too complicated that I couldn't keep up. It was a dark and twisted tale, which personally, I think gave it an excellent plot. But most importantly, there wasn't a dull moment. I couldn't stop reading!!! Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anybody! Now, I must read more of the authors work!

Got this at 12:25 this afternoon and finish it at 4:16! I really could t put it down ! It was amazing as always. This woman is amazing at making the beginning story’s of these villains ! We meet gothal young early 20. We find her life full of sadness and darkness. It goes up to where tangled ended. It’s an amazing story. Hoping queen of hearts is next :).

Since the very first chapter I didn’t want to put this book down! I loved the outline and I loved the back story to this villain! Amazing job and I highly suggest to any reader interested in reading about the dark side of Disney!

I collect these books, I love the quality of them. My favorite part is under the outer cover! You get to see Mother Gothel as the old witch! Really cool and original

The story was written in a "childish" way. It was interesting but just was not what I was expecting. The term sociopath was used and the word didn't even exist in the Rapunzel time period. To me, the author was just trying too hard and didn't do appropriate research for the story.

I couldn't put this down. This has the same kinda dark feel that Fairest of them all had. Love this writer. She is quickly becoming my favorite. Great!! You feel for Gothel and her sisters. Def gives a good background to her early life.

I loved this book... it was a lot darker than I thought it would be but it was really good... I was interested in finding out Gothel's story and hope we find out more about her family in the next book... Everyone at my worked loved this as well... we really enjoyed this whole series... Highly recommend the read

James Reason is a pioneer and leader in understanding and prevention of "organizational accidents." That alone is sufficient reason to read this book if you're interested in this topic, which is why I read it. However, Reason doesn't really break new ground with this book, so people who are already well versed in this field may not get much out of this book.The bottom line is that there are no easy answers when it comes to safety, and no one theoretical framework can cover all needs, so a multifaceted approach tailored to each organizational situation is likely the best way to go. Reason offers one such framework, and briefly comments on other frameworks in this book. Here are some points noted in the book which I think are worth highlighting:• The contributors to incidents can involve all levels of a system, ranging from individuals working at the “sharp end,” to groups, to organizations, to broader systems which include regulators. Efforts to prevent incidents will typically be best directed at multiple levels simultaneously, with both top-down support and bottom-up feedback. Efforts targeted to only a few specific areas are prone to not being effective because we can’t anticipate the specific ways adverse factors may “line up” to produce incidents, particularly in complex systems (and complex systems are the norm, not the exception).• “Human errors” can’t be eliminated, but their incidence and consequences can be reduced. As long as they are managed properly, human errors can also be a source of helping us learn how a system works.• People are naturally more inclined toward skill-based functioning, rather than more slow and laborious knowledge-based functioning. This influences the types of human errors which occur.• There will almost always be a competing tradeoff between safety and other goals such as production, performance, profit, etc. Safety is therefore usually under continual pressure and requires continual mindful vigilance. At the same time, too much emphasis on safety can impede operation of a system to the point where the system becomes no longer viable, so proper balance is needed.• In developing safety metrics, it should be noted that rates of minor incidents are not necessarily correlated with rates of major incidents. Sometimes, there can be even be an opposite correlation between the two, such that major incidents occur after a period of declining rate of minor incidents.• Due to complexity, uncertainties, limited resources, tradeoffs, and human fallibility, it is generally not possible to reduce incident rates to zero.

Hmmm ... not what I thought. I was expecting an updated edition of the previous classic. Instead, this is a collection of case studies without much of the theory in the original book. Not helpful for teaching a class.

I found this book to be perfect for me. I am a web application developer and do not have a lot of directx, graphic or game programming experience. Therefore this book really addressed my needs. I am already very familiar with C#, architecture, object oriented programming and design and this book really spoke to help me get a grasp on how I would go about writing a game, working with directx and graphics. The examples were great. The included code really helped to give a better understanding of how it all works together. David Weller, Alexandre Santos and Ellen Hatton have put together a very nice introduction for me. I liked that they chose a game that I was well known so that I was not caught up with learning the rules of a new game and could instead focus on the programming learning at hand. I also liked the examples for enhancing the games and suggesting ways to improve them. Game programming is a hobby of mine and will definitely take this knowledge to devising games that hopefully my kids will enjoy.

Quick Advice:Download C# Express from Microsoft's website, it is free right now. Also download the Summer 2003 edition of Direct X.Everything will compile except Space Wars 3D (I am so happy now, see below). I am missing files, its 3:00 am, I will look for my (or their mistake) in the morning.Also go to the Apress website to download all the code including the VB.Net version of the book. It seems they left out key files (Like images for chapter 3) for the C# version that you can get in the VB.net download.My Story:I got this book because I wanted to learn C# and have some fun. I certainly enjoyed the first 3 chapters. They were very nicely written and friendly, which is why I bought the book. I also like that the book explained the basic concepts clearly (which is all I am looking for right now). So far, fairly self-explanatory, follows with what I already knew and expected (it confirmed how I thought it all worked procedure wise).However, when I tried the book code in visual studio 2003 I kept getting errors. Mostly from me copying what the book had. I then had to tweak everything to get it to work. I later found it much easier to just load the code from the website. However, this does not help learning if you just compile and view. The step-by-step examples for the later chapters would have been nice for these early ones.After a short hiatus (6 months of wasteful job searching, which I am still on) I came back to work on chapters 4 onward. I found these to be very difficult to work with. I kept getting errors. After a few 5:00 am nights, I discovered it's not the code it is VS 2003 it just won't run it for some reason. Gives me a .net compilation error. I bet it has to do with patches or version differences of the .net framework.I was about to bag the book and write a bad review (mostly because I could not find quick help anywhere) when I decided to check Microsoft's website. After downloading their tools and converting the files to VS C# Express everything ran great. By the way, online resources say to use this with 2003, but I keep getting a greater version used error when working with 2003, so they must have done this in 2004. My advice on what to get is above.So after a bit a fun and a lot of short-term frustration I am happy once more and can continue my studies. My goal is not video games, but research and development for engineering. I just wanted a pretty way to render my results.To note, Direct X has had some major changes so the book is now dated, but the logic on Direct3D, collisions, and general procedures is still good. Direct Play is out, I am not sure about Direct Sound or Direct Input.When you buy a book you expect to get higher quality material then what you would find online. Overall, I would say it is better then some information I have found online, but it certainly lacks in certain areas such as better explanation on DirectX functions, though it does a good job where needed. For instance some spots in the DirectX documentation is lacking, the book does a good job of explaining those parts.Microsoft has plenty of new resources online now including better explanations on what was missing before, so I am unsure if this book is a buy anymore. I will say it is a good first start.

Like the fundamentals of detection of collisions between 2 objects on the screen.Naturally, since visuals are crucial, space is devoted to constructing 3D objects and rendering them with various textures. Frankly, for the pure graphics, the book only touches on the algorithms. You will need another text devoted to the latter. But within the space constraints of this book, there is an admirable job of conveying how to write games in C#.

Another great little pocket-sized guide to help the traveler decide where to go and what to do. Packed with information and good photos, I really like these little guides.

This is the least informative of all the Eyewitness Travel guides in my library today. May be that there is simply not enough information to compile a worthwhile book. Publisher might consider informative pamphlets in place of a combined island book. Would not buy again.

I find that a trip is not as valuable unless I bring reading material that helps me find places to go and see easily so I don't waste valuable time with trivial travel. This was a good guide.

Amazing Guidebook - we only had 5 days in the BVIs for our own chartered sailing adventure, and this book helped us to make sure we hit the high points. Don't leave home without it!

Only used for the American Virgin Islands. Maps were crappy. Info was okay and always like concise lists. I used this as a secondary guide book if I couldn't find anything in the first book. Best suggestion would be to make sure internet works well on your phone for info--AT&T.
