James Reason is a pioneer and leader in understanding and prevention of "organizational accidents." That alone is sufficient reason to read this book if you're interested in this topic, which is why I read it. However, Reason doesn't really break new ground with this book, so people who are already well versed in this field may not get much out of this book.The bottom line is that there are no easy answers when it comes to safety, and no one theoretical framework can cover all needs, so a multifaceted approach tailored to each organizational situation is likely the best way to go. Reason offers one such framework, and briefly comments on other frameworks in this book. Here are some points noted in the book which I think are worth highlighting:• The contributors to incidents can involve all levels of a system, ranging from individuals working at the “sharp end,” to groups, to organizations, to broader systems which include regulators. Efforts to prevent incidents will typically be best directed at multiple levels simultaneously, with both top-down support and bottom-up feedback. Efforts targeted to only a few specific areas are prone to not being effective because we can’t anticipate the specific ways adverse factors may “line up” to produce incidents, particularly in complex systems (and complex systems are the norm, not the exception).• “Human errors” can’t be eliminated, but their incidence and consequences can be reduced. As long as they are managed properly, human errors can also be a source of helping us learn how a system works.• People are naturally more inclined toward skill-based functioning, rather than more slow and laborious knowledge-based functioning. This influences the types of human errors which occur.• There will almost always be a competing tradeoff between safety and other goals such as production, performance, profit, etc. Safety is therefore usually under continual pressure and requires continual mindful vigilance. At the same time, too much emphasis on safety can impede operation of a system to the point where the system becomes no longer viable, so proper balance is needed.• In developing safety metrics, it should be noted that rates of minor incidents are not necessarily correlated with rates of major incidents. Sometimes, there can be even be an opposite correlation between the two, such that major incidents occur after a period of declining rate of minor incidents.• Due to complexity, uncertainties, limited resources, tradeoffs, and human fallibility, it is generally not possible to reduce incident rates to zero.

Hmmm ... not what I thought. I was expecting an updated edition of the previous classic. Instead, this is a collection of case studies without much of the theory in the original book. Not helpful for teaching a class.

The book has several good vignettes that illustrate systemic problems but is not offering any new information on recognizing organizational flaws in advance

I found this book to be perfect for me. I am a web application developer and do not have a lot of directx, graphic or game programming experience. Therefore this book really addressed my needs. I am already very familiar with C#, architecture, object oriented programming and design and this book really spoke to help me get a grasp on how I would go about writing a game, working with directx and graphics. The examples were great. The included code really helped to give a better understanding of how it all works together. David Weller, Alexandre Santos and Ellen Hatton have put together a very nice introduction for me. I liked that they chose a game that I was well known so that I was not caught up with learning the rules of a new game and could instead focus on the programming learning at hand. I also liked the examples for enhancing the games and suggesting ways to improve them. Game programming is a hobby of mine and will definitely take this knowledge to devising games that hopefully my kids will enjoy.

Quick Advice:Download C# Express from Microsoft's website, it is free right now. Also download the Summer 2003 edition of Direct X.Everything will compile except Space Wars 3D (I am so happy now, see below). I am missing files, its 3:00 am, I will look for my (or their mistake) in the morning.Also go to the Apress website to download all the code including the VB.Net version of the book. It seems they left out key files (Like images for chapter 3) for the C# version that you can get in the VB.net download.My Story:I got this book because I wanted to learn C# and have some fun. I certainly enjoyed the first 3 chapters. They were very nicely written and friendly, which is why I bought the book. I also like that the book explained the basic concepts clearly (which is all I am looking for right now). So far, fairly self-explanatory, follows with what I already knew and expected (it confirmed how I thought it all worked procedure wise).However, when I tried the book code in visual studio 2003 I kept getting errors. Mostly from me copying what the book had. I then had to tweak everything to get it to work. I later found it much easier to just load the code from the website. However, this does not help learning if you just compile and view. The step-by-step examples for the later chapters would have been nice for these early ones.After a short hiatus (6 months of wasteful job searching, which I am still on) I came back to work on chapters 4 onward. I found these to be very difficult to work with. I kept getting errors. After a few 5:00 am nights, I discovered it's not the code it is VS 2003 it just won't run it for some reason. Gives me a .net compilation error. I bet it has to do with patches or version differences of the .net framework.I was about to bag the book and write a bad review (mostly because I could not find quick help anywhere) when I decided to check Microsoft's website. After downloading their tools and converting the files to VS C# Express everything ran great. By the way, online resources say to use this with 2003, but I keep getting a greater version used error when working with 2003, so they must have done this in 2004. My advice on what to get is above.So after a bit a fun and a lot of short-term frustration I am happy once more and can continue my studies. My goal is not video games, but research and development for engineering. I just wanted a pretty way to render my results.To note, Direct X has had some major changes so the book is now dated, but the logic on Direct3D, collisions, and general procedures is still good. Direct Play is out, I am not sure about Direct Sound or Direct Input.When you buy a book you expect to get higher quality material then what you would find online. Overall, I would say it is better then some information I have found online, but it certainly lacks in certain areas such as better explanation on DirectX functions, though it does a good job where needed. For instance some spots in the DirectX documentation is lacking, the book does a good job of explaining those parts.Microsoft has plenty of new resources online now including better explanations on what was missing before, so I am unsure if this book is a buy anymore. I will say it is a good first start.

They were missing classes that need to be purchased/downloaded from a third party.Part of learning a new programming/technology concept is having a working model. Frankly, for the pure graphics, the book only touches on the algorithms. You will need another text devoted to the latter. But within the space constraints of this book, there is an admirable job of conveying how to write games in C#.

Another great little pocket-sized guide to help the traveler decide where to go and what to do. Packed with information and good photos, I really like these little guides.

This is the least informative of all the Eyewitness Travel guides in my library today. May be that there is simply not enough information to compile a worthwhile book. Publisher might consider informative pamphlets in place of a combined island book. Would not buy again.

I find that a trip is not as valuable unless I bring reading material that helps me find places to go and see easily so I don't waste valuable time with trivial travel. This was a good guide.

Amazing Guidebook - we only had 5 days in the BVIs for our own chartered sailing adventure, and this book helped us to make sure we hit the high points. Don't leave home without it!

Helpful and covers everything

Only used for the American Virgin Islands. Maps were crappy. Info was okay and always like concise lists. I used this as a secondary guide book if I couldn't find anything in the first book. Best suggestion would be to make sure internet works well on your phone for info--AT&T.

Frugality, simplicity and a strong faith are qualities I identified with growing up Mennonite in Lancaster County, PA during the 1950s. Linda Maendel has painted in bold colors a realistic picture of life in a similar culture, her Hutterite colony in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Mennonites and Hutterites both have Anabaptist origins in Europe, value close family ties, and oppose war.Using blog posts, newspaper articles, and historical research, Maendel recalls the hard work and strong sense of community that keeps the Elm River Colony thriving. Before reading this book, I had only a vague idea of Hutterite life. However, I learned that cooperation makes their world go round, basing this belief on the New Testament teaching in Acts 2:40-47. While the colony members do not have personal bank accounts, colony leaders distribute funds to individual families and pay all Canadian government taxes. They are skilled at re-purposing too. The author’s stories of fashioning an old desk into something new and creating lap quilts from patches are heart-warming.Reading Linda’s memoir felt calming. As Valerie Weaver-Zercher mentions in her book Thrill of the Chaste, readers are drawn to stories like these because of the moral innocence exemplified, “chaste residents in a defiled world,” as she puts it. I found it interesting that my friend Weaver-Zercher was Maendel’s editor during book publication.Maendel is a consummate storyteller, a quality students in her German and English classes must relish. Through wit, humor, and an authentic voice, Linda Maendel is giving her Hutterite community a legacy to savor and to those yet to come a roadmap to follow

I had been looking forward to the publishing of this book since I knew about it from reading Linda's blog, and it does not disappoint. I think it very well succeeds in accomplishing the author's intention of sharing a picture of Hutterite life as it is lived in the early 2000s. Linda has a very flowing conversational style that gives the reader a feeling of being with her and hearing all these things first hand. I like the topics she chose to share very much. Linda writes about history, but also about the day to day life on a Hutterite colony, and special things that happen. It is clear that there is a strong bond among these people but also clear that they are very human, perhaps especially the children. Well done!

Until I was led to Linda’s Book all I’d read on the Hutterites was pretty dated. The Hutterites culture is quietly but assuredly in flux. It is with great pleasure that I recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in learning about these truly amazing people. We non-Hutterites have much to learn from them and how they mediate change.

Ideal book for young children! Nice size for small hands. The flaps are sturdy and won’t break with use!

My daughter is almost two and we’ve been reading these chunky flap books for about a year. She loves interacting with them. The flaps keep her engaged. I wish they had more in the series. Whenever we read a book with paper flaps, she pulls and tears the flaps. These are much more sturdy.

Our son loves these books! Got all 5 and read them every day from age 3 months to 6 months at least

Nice thick pages. Panels are perfect for my 1 year old to pull. Pages are playful and fun for learning colors. I just wish pink was included!!

These babies love Lift-a-Flap books are the best. My infant started lifting the flaps at 6 or 7 months and she still loves doing it at 9 months. I've bought 8 of these books so far and I plan on buying more. I can't recommend them enough!

Love & so does my son. Love that every page has a flap and is chunky enough to with stand my 1 year old "reading" it by himself.

This book is only first volume. It is not complete 9 volume work. Name is misleading. Table-of-content shown is fraud. Only volume I is present. No page numbers and no clearly marked sections. This is one continuous book where chapters and sections starts anywhere in the middle of the page and titles are not bold either. They are in same font as regular text making hard to spot. I left one star for print quality.Old review:I was looking for Swamiji's complete work which comes as multiple volumes. But this is a single book. I don't think it has all volumes combined based on its size. Also its a strange book. It has no page numbers. It has no separation of chapters. Chapters starts inline with regular text anywhere on the page and have same text size, format as rest of the text. So without page numbers and no chapter/section separation, it is difficult to read. Better by 9 volume set. I gave ** for paper and print quality which is good.

The most substantial "negative" comment on this volume in past reviews is that there is no TOC. I hesitated to urchase this book but decided to download the trial first to see if a TOC had been added sinc ethat negative review was posted. And..yes, there is now a TOC. As of today (Jan. 6 2015) there is a very detailed TOC with live links to each section of eafch volume. The TOC is so large that it is difficult to navigate but this is easily remedied by doing a search for the word "Volume" - you get a list of each of the 9 volume headings and from there you can click on whatever section you want. Each section is also numbered so if you know the volume and section you are looking for you can search on the number (for example 7.1) and navigate directly to that section or any of its subsectoins (7.1.1, 7.1.2 etc.)Combine this workable TOC with the Kindle's ability to search for any concept (like "karma") and this Kindle edition is a practical a way to access Vivekananda's writings and talks as you are ever likely to find. As a bonus text to speech (TTS) is enabled. If you have a fluid TTS voice installed on your tablet (my favorite is the British TTS voice "Brian" which is available on the HDX tabletsg) you an turn on text to speech and imagine you are at one of Vivekananda's talks.

As a Christian in the world today, I believe it is also important to be familiar with other religious traditions. I must also confess having a long term fascination with Hinduism simply because it is the oldest of the major religions of the world, the others being Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. I also respect Hinduism as I find many of its practitioners to be humble and good people.What I like most about Swami Vivekananda is the freshness of his writing, which is saying something because it is over a century old. There is a sense of immediacy to these essays, lectures, and letters. You get a bang for the buck here with this series of 8 volumes, which are in a handsome set and easy to read. SwamiJI covers a wide range of topics including many lectures and essays on Hinduism, the Vedas, Christianity, and the place of religion in the world. For Christians, it is insightful to see how followers of another faith based tradition speak of you!In addition there are many practical lectures on meditation, and yoga, popular topics today. If you're not familiar with Swami Vivekananda, there are many videos on Youtube where you can get your feet wet as it were. I'd start there and then start reading. You can't go wrong with the Complete Works!

This kindle version of this book was the need of these days....we need to spread Swamiji's work in every way possible. If you are interested in Hinduism or Budhhism or Indian Culture or you are just in search for a greater peaceful life you should read this book. Just to reach all the people we are getting this a way below than a nominal rate. But the content of this book can change your view towards life forever. I hope all the Indians may already know about Swamiji a little or more. For the Non-Indian people I am giving a little history about his profound influence on Western Countries:Swami Vivekananda, the nineteenth-century Indian Hindu monk is considered as one of the most influential people of modern India and Hinduism.Vivekananda, during and after his tour of western countries in Europe and the United States had profound influence on notable personalities, who either became his ardent devotees or friends and some even his ardent disciples and many of whom even became ascetics. Right at the beginning of his visit to Chicago to address the Parliament of World Religions Professor John Henry Wright of Harvard University, invited him to speak at Harvard. He pointed out to Vivekananda the necessity of going to the Parliament of Religions, which he thought would give an introduction to the nation. Wright's reasoning was "To ask for your credentials is like asking the sun to state its right to shine in the heavens". Some of such well-known luminaries are: Max Müller (Indologist), J. J. Goodwin, John Henry Barrows, Mark Twain, Sturdy, Romain Rolland, Sara Chapman Bull, his American mother and benefactor, Mary Hale, Josephine MacLeod, Christine Greenstidel (who later came to be known as Sister Christine, Maragaret Noble (Sister Nivedita in later years), William James, Josiah Royce, Robert G. Ingersoll, Nikola Tesla, Lord Kelvin, Harriet Monroe, Ella Wheeler Wilcox, Sarah Bernhardt, Emma Calvé and Hermann Ludwig Ferdinand von Helmholtz He initiated several followers : Marie Louise (a French woman) became Swami Abhayananda, and Leon Landsberg became Swami Kripananda.American industrialist John D. Rockefeller reportedly made his first large donation for public welfare and later became a notable philanthropist after a meeting with Vivekananda. My soul will bear him an eternal gratitude.Vivekananda's life and works have influenced many scholars, writers, politicians worldwide. French writer Romain Rolland wrote that Vivekananda was "energy personified". Rolland felt "kingliness" was Vivekananda's characteristics, "He was a born king and nobody ever came near him in India or America without paying homage to his majesty." American writer, historian, philosopher Will Durant told, the speeches of Vivekananda were more "virile" than the ones delivered in the Vedic times.The nationalist leader and the first president of independent Indonesia Sukarno said that it was Swami Vivekananda who inspired him to become strong and to serve God and mankind. Historian and Indologist Arthur Llewellyn Basham compared Vivekananda with other eminent religious figures of India such as Kabir, Adi Shankara, Chaitanya. Russian academician and public figure Eugene Chelyshev was an ardent admirer of Swami Vivekananda. He said:"Reading and re-reading the works of Vivekananda each time I find in them something new that helps deeper to understand India, its philosophy, the way of the life and customs of the people in the past and the present, their dreams of the future..."Barack Obama, the President of the United States, quoted Vivekananda's words in his speech delivered in India in November 2010. He said:"Instead of succumbing to division, you have shown that the strength of India—the very idea of India—is its embrace of all colors, castes and creeds. It's the diversity represented in this chamber today. It's the richness of faiths celebrated by a visitor to my hometown of Chicago more than a century ago—the renowned Swami Vivekananda. He said that, "holiness, purity and charity are not the exclusive possessions of any church in the world, and that every system has produced men and women of the most exalted character."

These nine volumes are like an encyclopedia. It has everything Karma Yoga, Raja Yoga, Bhakti Yoga & Jnana yoga. It also contains lectures given by Swamiji on Gita, Upanishada, Vedanta and so on. And of course one gets to know Swami Vivekananda and his teachings.Although its available online, I am very happy to have it on my Kindle.Thanks.
