My actual chemistry textbook was not aligned with the AP curriculum exactly, and this book really makes everything short and sweet and has EVERYTHING you need to know. If I had known how useful it was, I would have bought it in the beginning of the year!! The practice questions after each section are PERFECT. If you can do them, you understand the material. Also, I just took the AP test this year and I can say that the short answers are VERY SIMILAR to what this book has. The multiple choice isn’t as good, but definitely study the short answer because some of the short answers in the book were almost the same if not harder than the actual AP Exam. When I finished the short answer section, on the AP Exam, I can happily say I knew how to do the redox titration and enthalpy one thanks to this amazing book. If you’re taking AP chem next year, buy Princeton review! (It’s betger than barons cause it gets to the point and makes everything easy, it also covers all the lab stuff you need to know)

It has helpful content but I was disappointed in all of the errors/misprints in the book, some that make the explanations seem very confusing. Could have been edited more thoroughly.

Still contains material that is no longer tested, but my students loved this resource and found the relevant information easy to study with explanations that made them feel confident they understood it.

No matter what, you need one of these to study for AP Exams successfully. This one does a pretty good job.

Good product, unfortunately the 2018 Edition does not appear to be updated or much different from the 2017 Edition.

William K. Kershner (1930 - 2007) began flying in 1945 at the age of fifteen, washing and propping airplanes to earn flying time. He is the author (and illustrator) of The Student Pilot’s Flight Manual, The Instrument Flight Manual, The Advanced Pilot’s Flight Manual, The Flight Instructor’s Manual, The Basic Aerobatic Manual, and Logging Flight Time.The Kershner Flight Manual Series has influenced hundreds of thousands of pilots, with over 1.3 million copies printed in at least 3 languages. After doing his first spin at the age of 16 in an Aeronca TAC, Kershner flew and taught aerobatics for 60 years and operated a one-airplane, one-instructor aerobatics school in Sewanee, Tennessee using a Cessna 152 Aerobat. He received the General Aviation Flight Instructor of the Year Award, 1992, at the state, regional and national levels. The Ninety-Nines awarded him the 1994 Award of Merit. In 1998 he was inducted into the Flight Instructor Hall of Fame and in 2002 was among the first to be inducted into the Tennessee Aviation Hall of Fame. In 2007 he was inducted into the International Aerobatic Club Hall of Fame; to date he is only person inducted into both the International Aerobatic Club Hall of Fame and the Flight Instructor’s Hall of Fame.

First, I absolutely love all of William Kershner's flying textbooks. When flying was just a distant dream to me, I bought a copy of "The Student Pilot's Flight Manual" - it was the first flying textbook I owned, and it made everything so clear, even before I had a single hour at the controls. Same for all of the other Kershner books - I've read and benefitted from them all, and even as I've earned all sorts of ratings, I still refer back to some of his books now and then.Fast forward many years, and although I'm not really interested in a career as a CFI (I don't think I'd have enough students to stay current), I am interested in giving something back to the aviation community by teaching ground school, so I'm considering going for an AGI (Advanced Ground Instructor) certificate. Naturally, I picked up Kershner's book, and for the most part, I've found it just as helpful as his other texts.My only gripe is that, like many of the other books out there, Kershner promotes an integrated approach that mixes ground and flight together. This is probably exactly the right thing for someone on a CFI path, but for someone like me pursuing the AGI, this means there's a lot of material that just isn't very relevant for me. Sure, I like Kershner's writing style and I'm happy to read every word, but learning to fly from the right seat (for example) just isn't that important to me at this point.Otherwise, I do like the book very much overall, especially the focus on the human factors and attitudes that go into being a good instructor. Indeed, I think back on many of the CFI's I've known over the years, and his suggestions and guidelines exactly define the best of the best that I've known.I'd definitely recommend this book as a great way to get started learning how to give flight instruction.

Similar to the Airplane Flying Handbook but obviously from an instructing point of view. Comprehensive in that it covers FOI, Private, Commercial, Multi, Instrument, and Aerobatics. My only critique is that there are only 17 pages devoted to light twins, over 60 pages on aerobatics, and zero pages on water ops. It would truly be a complete book if seaplane ops were included (after all, he took the time to include substantial aerobatic instruction; surely there's a similar number of floatplane instructors/students). More importantly, I feel the chapters on multi-engine and instrument instruction could be a little more robust. Overall, a nicely written book - easy to read and then create your own outline as to how you will instruct a topic.

The information presented is excellent but the Kindle version does not have a table of contents and the index doesn’t show page numbers for any of the topics. This makes the Kindle version very difficult to navigate. Hopefully this can be fixed. In the meantime I cannot recommend the Kindle version.

I've used many texts over the years, and IMHO no one beats Kershner. He explains things in terms students can understand, a real help to instructors. Those who say his jokes are a bit dated are right, but it adds to the enjoyment of the reading. Like picking up a conversation with an old friend. Highly useful, and highly recommend.

Great book for aspiring flight instructors. There aren't too many books out there on how to be a successful flight instructor and this is a really good one.

Reasonably priced.

This is a necessary book for all Flight Instructors. This is the 'How to" book for how to teach difficult subjects to personswho want to obtain flight licenses and upgrades.

This book would have 5 stars had they decided to build these projects per the directions. So far I am two projects in on this book and have found errors in both projects. Her shopping list tells you to buy enough wood for one side, not two. This error is found in her farm house table plans and the farm house bench. This book has potential but she doesn't even bother to rectify these with a newer edition or in her blog that she is so well known for. If you buy this book make sure you read the shopping list and cut list. If something seems out of place that's because it is.

I love the book but know that the directions/drawings/cut lists for the farm table and Adirondack chairs are INCORRECT!!! No errata that I could find online on her blog or maybe an updated book version...sad nice projects but CHECK CHECK CHECK everything before you do/cut/buy anything for the projects.

This is a great book if you need to get motivated and inspired. Ana is right about the box furniture: you get a pile of particle boards in a box which you then assemble. So why not cut and assemble your own (good quality) boards? Each project is broken down into steps with all necessary materials and tools listed in the beginning. The cut lists are nicely labeled, and the assembly steps are color-coded.Don't expect great prose there. :) More like talking to a friend. This is not a furniture making manual either. It doesn't cover every furniture-making technique. Every project is a very practical, basic, "woman-centric" piece of furniture to use, as opposed to a carved heirloom version. In my subjective opinion, the simple projects in the book are not very stylish, and the more stylish ones are not so simple. The budget-friendly part? It depends. To make each project square, plumb, and level you have to be able to make square cuts, which require reasonable quality power tools ($$). Also, the Kreg jig for joinery (I have one, it's great) can cost you up to $99. So, be prepared to spend couple hundred dollars on that first shelf or picture frame, unless you have a man in your life with a shop full of tools AND he is willing to lend them to you (an angel). Some projects in the book might have minor design flaws (e.g. the way face frames are built, or how load-bearing elements are joined). So the master-carpenters out there might chuckle. Let them chuckle, practice makes perfect. We all have to start somewhere. If you are on a very tight budget, visit Ana's blog where she posts free furniture plans. It is a great preview of what's in the book.

What an enjoyable book this is.I'm new to woodworking and new to Ana White's blog so a recipe from the book was my first try at an Ana-authored project. I'm using the word "recipe" intentionally. As a curious and fairly confident home cook, I'm game to pick up a book and try to make something new, even with new-to-me ingredients and tools. However many of the wood working project books I've seen are loaded with jargon and somehow impenetrable or inaccessible to me -- or the projects are just goofy and uninteresting.In sharp contract, this book made me feel like I could knock out an appealing project the same way a good cookbook would. I made the farmhouse bench, following the instructions carefully, and then made a second one customized (smaller in length for my mudroom space, taller in height for the comfort of my family). I learned a lot in the doing, and that acquisition of technique and understanding gave me the confidence to design and build a custom media tower. So now I've got some great wood furniture exactly as I want it for much less than I could have purchased it.Why not five stars? This is a solid first book but some details need checking and correction. For example, the farmhouse bench cutting list is missing a few items, if you want your bench to look like the picture. (Specifically you need four side trims, not two, and you need two bottom shelf trims, not one.) You figure it out when you build the bench and look at pictures of the benches other people built yet it is incorrect in the instructions. Note: the shopping list covers enough lumber, it's just a cutting list error.Second, her rating system is a little funky. As a starting woodworker, I was looking for appealing "one nail"/easy rating projects to start with. They're only a couple in the whole book, none of which interested me. If this is a "start here" book, it should maybe include more beginning projects. It wasn't until I read her intro for the recipe that I got the confidence to build the bench.Third, these recipes invite customization yet the book says very little about that. They'd be more useful if they included tips on customizing the projects.Finally, the book would seem more ideal to me if it had a little more information on the finishings shown. Some tips are including in the narratives but it's a little haphazard, especially since some tips can apply to many projects. So it would be great if this type of information was more ordered.Even taking into account these criticisms, this is a really fun, exciting book. I'm 99% sure that if there's a volume II, I'll be buying that as well.

Ana White is a Goddess. She makes the most difficult seeming things look do-able. Her instructions are clear. The techniques she uses are within reach of most women (and men) with a few basic tools. The book has a number of nice projects, which, in typical Ana White can-do fashion are achievable even by novicesBut I think the most important thing about the book is the author's straight-forward attitude that just communicates confidence. I really love building things but I was never taught how to do it. I took Home Ec with the other girls while the boys took shop. I've mostly learned by looking at You-Tube and talking to the guys at the lumber yard until I found Ana White's blog with all the wonderful advice and instructions in it.I bought the book mostly as a way of saying thank-you for all the free lessons from her blog, but I ended up discovering quite a few projects I intend to build - a folding sewing table with room to store my machine, a media console, a bathroom storage unit, and a bed to name a few.

As an optometrist, I always want my patients to understand what is going on with their eyes. I have used every picture, diagram and computerized image of the eyes out there and this one is simply the best. Everything you want to talk about with a patient is represented on the poster in an easy to understand view. The adnexa, the lids in cross section, the extraocular muscles, the ciliary body, the lens, the retina - everything. There is even a detailed view of the trabecular meshwork and layers of the retina.I now have the identical chart in every room in the office.Mike Rothschild, OD

The print quality is great and the illustrations are excellent for learning about the eye and to use as a visual aid with patients. I have one I purchased years ago in one exam room and wanted an identical picture for the second exam room at my office. I have a problem with the seller's lack of information, however. I'm disappointed that it has grommets. Looks silly having grommets behind glass and a nice frame. I suppose they are handy if you want to hang the poster by the grommet holes. The listing should have included a picture with the two holes in the top corners.

This is a very nice poster of the anatomy of the human eye. I purchased second copy so that I would have one in both my examination room and office. The surface allows writing with both water-based and dry erase markers. Highly recommended.

HamiltonÂ’s achievements as first Secretary of the Treasury, co-author of The Federalist Papers, and member of the Constitutional Convention were clouded after his death by strident claims that he was an arrogant, self-serving monarchist. Chernow delves into the almost 22,000 pages of letters, manuscripts, and articles that make up HamiltonÂ’s legacy to reveal a man with a sophisticated intellect, a romantic spirit, and a late-blooming religiosity. One fault of the book, is that Chernow is so convinced of HamiltonÂ’s excellence that his narrative sometimes becomes hagiographic. Nowhere is this more apparent than in ChernowÂ’s account of the infamous duel between Hamilton and Aaron Burr in 1804. He describes HamiltonÂ’s final hours as pious, while Burr, Jefferson, and Adams achieve an almost cartoonish villainy at the news of HamiltonÂ’s passing. A defender of the union against New England secession and an opponent of slavery, Hamilton has a special appeal to modern sensibilities. Chernow argues that in contrast to Jefferson and WashingtonÂ’s now outmoded agrarian idealism, Hamilton was "the prophet of the capitalist revolution" and the true forebear of modern America. In his Prologue, he writes: "In all probability, Alexander Hamilton is the foremost figure in American history who never attained the presidency, yet he probably had a much deeper and more lasting impact than many who did." I actually got this book from a store, but I've been buying up Founder books on Amazon left and right in my quest to earn a self-awarded M.A. in Poli Sci, and, for some odd reason, I decided I have the right to critique this one, too, especially because I'm a little irate about this particular work. This was an impressive and troubling read. It's exceptionally well written and covers Hamilton's life with such color and detail that I was enthralled through the first half. And then I began to feel this grating sensation, and finally I came to realize it was because the writer bears such rabid personal animosity toward Jefferson that after a hundred pages or so of unrelenting, really vitriolic attacks on the man (maybe biographers just get that way...no, not all of them), I began to lose faith in his overall objectivity as a biographer.To wit: where Hamilton was "brilliant," "a true American genuis," "inspired," almost super-human in his ability to crank out brilliant, fully formed essays, the other indispensable founder, a man of towering logic and foresight, a man for whom "I told you so" became a mantra, etc., etc., virtually every word and/or action by Jefferson was deemed "effrontery," "outrageous," "had the temerity to," and on and on, truly ad nauseum. Everyone knows Jefferson had personal flaws, hypocrisy, sly political ways (as did Hamilton), and particular trouble around slavery, for which he did express much guilt. But Chernow has apparently decided T Jefferson was absolutely the most vile, dishonest, unethical mucus-coated slug-creature ever to ooze out of the political soil.Where Hamilton created a genius system of big banks, etc. (the results of which we're perhaps starting to reassess these days), when Jefferson oversaw a surplus in his first term as president, Mr. Chernow called it "an accident." I mean, come on, the guy had a few fans, and Hamilton certainly had more than his share of enemies. Another fact to consider: Jefferson has the big old monument by which we remember him (not to mention the Declaration and the Louisiana Purchase, which I suppose were accidents, too), while Hamilton has...the Grange and, to some degree, too-big-to-fail. Are the American people so easy to delude? The bias was so thick that I finally, sadly, felt the need to skip about 100 pages, jumping over Hamilton's post-administration period to just before the duel, because I found it so difficult to tolerate the outrageous effrontery and temerity of the writer, attacking this fellow founder with such venom and petulance, apparently because Hamilton and Jefferson didn't get along and the writer reveres Hamilton to the point of beatifying the man. This is the book's fatal flaw, in my opinion. Childishness that sullied scholarship. An impressive work otherwise, though the Jefferson bias really has me wondering how accurate the rest of it is. And all of this pisses me off, by the way, because I really wanted to get a thorough understanding of Hamilton and now have a hole in my reading, and I have way too many other presidents and political leaders to pursue and so I won't be going back to Alexander again, may the gods bless his troubled soul. Dammit.Okay...feeling better now.

This book is a beautifully rendered portrait of Hamilton, both his public life and his private life. As so many other reviewers have noted, the book is an example of first-rate biographical research and most of the book is well-written.Up to chapter 16, “Dr. Pangloss,” the story is superbly told. But, when Thomas Jefferson enters Hamilton’s life, much of the book becomes a contrast between Hamilton, who had his own well-documented personal failings, with Jefferson who, if the text is to be believed, had nothing but personal failings. Jefferson is variously described as hypocritical, duplicitous and conniving. Undoubtedly, Jefferson fit much of this description but so did Hamilton in their Federalist-Republican (anti-Federalist) feud in the 1790’s. What bothered me was the unrelenting negative portrayal of Jefferson, Madison (after 1790) and John Adams. Hamilton is portrayed accurately and fully as a brilliant and decent man with some major flaws. Jefferson and, to a somewhat lesser extent, Madison and Adams, are portrayed as deeply flawed individuals who happened to have a few good points. The language reinforces this. If one were to count the negatively loaded adjectives and verbs accorded to Hamilton’s three main opponents, they would vastly outnumber any positive linguistic connotations. In order to sharpen Hamilton’s character portrayal, the image that Chernow gives of Hamilton’s opponents is, given other biographies of these men, less than just.The name-calling, smear campaigns and character assassinations in the 1790’s are appalling (but less so given the 2016 Presidential campaign). However, a dozen years after independence and only a few years after the Constitution was ratified, the fears of the anti-Federalists were real ones. Jefferson’s and Madison’s hypocrisy and the foibles of John Adam’s personality notwithstanding, the concerns expressed were often genuine ones at that time about what kind of country the United States would be and how the Constitution should be interpreted. The possibility that the Jeffersonians may have had a point gets lost in Chernow’s constant barrage of claims about duplicity, hypocrisy and malevolent intentions.So I thought this was a brilliant portrayal of the man who founded our economic and, to a large extent, our political system. The portrayal of Aaron Burr is excellent and the factors leading up to the duel are gripping. But the mid-section of the book would have been even stronger if Chernow had presented Hamilton’s foes in a fuller, less negatively charged light.

Anyone familiar with the subject matter and how it relates to the greater issues individuals in society are facing philosophically, practically, and morally today will gain deeper understanding from the ideas in this book. There's knowledge in science but great wisdom in holy scripture for those with eyes to see...

A wonderful little gem from the early 1960s.

Excellent.

This is a useful historical text to consider in debates about how far to entrust decisions to search engines, expert computer systems, unmanned aerial vehicles, and other automated agents. Wiener, succinctly and with persuasive examples, makes an argument similar to Joseph Weizenbaum's Computer Power and Human Reason about the necessity of drawing on the judgment of people. Short as it is, this book meanders somewhat. One could easily become derailed near the beginning with some highly speculative technical mumbo-jumbo (it almost seems that Wiener threw it in for that purpose), and he also digresses for commentary on the U.S.-Soviet ideological battles of the day. Furthermore, religious references are restricted to the very beginning.

Weiner was something of a revolutionary in his time. He (among others) pushed the revolution in computing out of the slipstick era. He, at the height of the Cold War, wrote for audiences in both the USSR and the USA. Small wonder that he took on religion. I mean that he took it on as a duty and companion, not as an opponent, though many might have seen opposition.Much of this book lacks direction. He skims issues that are still contentious, including the right to die. His arguments about self-reproducing machines tend twaords the vague, although he admits that he avoided tedious precision. Many of his points are clear and sharp, however. Drawing on the genie in the bottle, the Sorcerer's Apprentice, and other popular literature, he argues that the capabilities of technology steadily run ahead of our ability to predict and mitigate its consequences. He also notes, during first light of the transistor age, that "Living matter has a fine structure ... [approached by] machines which operate according to the principles of solid-state physics." As usual, technological optimism carried him well beyond justifiable extrapolation. Also as usual, he had a fair inkling of how today's 0.1 micron transistors might compare to 1.0 micron brain cells.His sharpest commentary starts in the faith that scientists and engineers are moral people, and work in the belief of the human good that comes from their life's work. (Please, don't descend to the belief that we think we are evil people reveling in evil outcomes.) Weiner notes that the deepest hell in Dante's Inferno is reserved for the sin of simony - directing the Church's good power to personal gain, using the force of money. He draws a direct analogy to the sin of corrupting vast technological power towards personal gain, also using money as controlling force. If you're already queasy about the amorality of the MBA's "bottom line" ethos, this may give you some very bad dreams.It's an important book. It's flawed, but has the honesty to ask hard questions. It also has the courage to attach a moral sense to the analytic trait of mind - it ought not be surprising that the two fit closely.Among all the quotable lines in this book, one stands out: "... remember that in the game of atomic warfare, there are no experts." Here, now, under the president that demolished 30 years of arms control treaties, it's a phrase to remember.//wiredweird

In reviewing this book I feel a little like Icarus. I feel afraid to fly to close to the sun of Norbert Wiener's genius, herein exposed full force. For example, have you ever been asked the chicken and egg question? Norbert Wiener answers thusly, "a hen is merely an egg's way of making another egg.." Contrast this with "The Selfish Gene" which took Richard Dawkins a whole book to say. (See my review of this book elsewhere at Amazon.com.)The subtitle sets forth, in brilliant compaction, the theme of this essentially extended essay: "A Comment on Certain Points Where Cybernetics Impinges on Relgion."First, Wiener considers machines which learn.Next, Wiener considers machines which reproduce themselves.Wiener's work anticipates the entire modern field of bioethics. As Wiener says in his final chapter, "I have now run through a number of essays that are united by covering the entire theme of creative activity, from God to the machine, under one set of concepts. The machine, as I have already said is the modern counterpart of the Golem of the Rabbi of Prague." If you are concerned about cloning, or man playing God, I urge you to buy and study this book.

"God and Golem, Inc." by Norbert Wiener is a curious set of publications united under one title. It looks like all today's inventions and science paradigms were discovered long time ago. Would be interesting for A.I. and IT researchers.
