Jordan Denari Duffner is a leading Catholic voice on Muslim-Christian relations and an advocate for interreligious dialogue. Currently pursuing a PhD in Theological and Religious Studies at Georgetown University, she is also an associate at the Bridge Initiative, where she previously worked as a research fellow studying anti-Muslim prejudice. The best part of this book for me was the witness to and strong encouragement to get to know Muslims and enter a dialogue of life. The author wrote much about her contacts with Muslims in the U.S. and abroad. These personal accounts were very helpful. Personal contacts make a great deal of difference, and give us a chance to clarify what we read and hear about Islam and Muslims. I've read a fair amount about Islam in the past several years and have had some personal contacts at my parish and at a local Islamic center. I have come to the conclusion that personal contacts are very helpful in getting to the heart of matters.I am left with some questions about the theological interpretations in the book about what Muslims believe. (That is largely why I gave the book four stars, rather than five.) I'm attempting to talk with a local Imam I've met at an interfaith discussion at our parish and at an Iftar this year during Ramadan about these questions. He is very articulate and loves these discussions so I am looking forward to that. If it happens, I will revisit this review and write about the outcome.7/4/18: I met with the Iman today for coffee and gave him my copy of the book to read. We plan on getting together again to discuss his thoughts on the book. Our hope is to have an interfaith discussion at our Catholic parish this fall with some Muslims from the local Islamic Center and Catholics from our parish.7/23/18: I met again with the Imam to discuss his thoughts on the book. He has several concerns about the interpretations offered in the book. Nevertheless, we may use this book for a parish-level Catholic-Muslim Discussion as even these concerns are a good starting point for discussion.The book has discussion questions at the end, a glossary, and suggestions for further reading. This is all very helpful for those who want to continue studying this topic.

The topic is timely and deeply explored, though the book is never dense and moves along at a very crisp, enjoyable pace. I couldn't put the book down. Denari Duffner shares the perfect mix of her personal experiences and scholarly insight from sources like Islamic mystics and papal encyclicals, and has written a real gem. You will enjoy this book, and learn a great deal, too.

I must say Jordan's first book on this important relationship between us all is enormously important. It has helped me to articulate my own relationship with Muslim friends and how we all enhance our own faiths. In the kind of divisive world we live in, this is a practical tool to assist Christians and Muslims in our search together for common ground, a respect for our differences, and ways we can flourish together. What an important search in the times we live.

Demario Duffner shows that interfaith relationships actually strengthen ones own personal religious convictions, not weakening them. Jordan Denari Duffner has put together an accessible and inspiring book that combines her own story of growing in her own Catholic faith though encounters with Muslims and careful engagement with both the Islamic tradition and the Catholic faith (particularly the doctrine arising from Vatican II). While she doesn’t get too deep into theological nuance, she does lay out enough of a foundation for Catholics to begin conversations with their Muslim neighbors. What strikes me as most distinctively Catholic about her approach is her spiritual and intellectual courage. The Catholic tradition holds that truth cannot contradict truth and therefore Catholics need never fear learning about the beliefs of others nor about their practices. To learn about others—to get to know our neighbors for who they are and what they believe—is a necessary step of faith and love through which we might begin to counteract the fear, suspicion, and hatred that drive far too many of our words and actions. Excellent work.

Maybe it is because I have been reading books 1-3 back-to-back, but I am starting to lose interest.Leda needs to get to level 8 or 9 to be able to communicate with her abducted foster brother, that is the one reason for her to have joined the Legion of Angels. As we know hardly anything about said brother and there was no established story between them, I have no real feelings about this.I dislike the Legion of Angels. All those young people pledging themselves, fighting for the Legion and trying to get better and better. For what? For the Gods? For the angels? For the world? They are so easily discarded by the dozens, sacrificed by the Legion for a 'better' cause. Forced to drink the Nectar before they are ready and have a horrible death. I was disgusted. Nero explains somewhere that Nyx, the First Angel, is not born human and that excuses the despicable death toll???The storyline could be condensed as it seems books 1-2 are rinsed and repeated. Leda fights, trains, fights, trains, thinks of sex with Nero etc. etc. And she gets to the next level. The relationship between Leda and Nero moves slowly. In this book there is some talk about angels being forced to marry. What is the connection with Leda/Nero?Everything is too slow for my liking and I am not sure I will continue the series. It is written very well, but I need more explanation about things that don't add up.

So holy shmolies!!! I completely am in love with this series!!!! It's hard to keep a story intriguing upto book three and beyond but wow still amazing!! Once I start I cannot stop I love Leda and Nero and their evolving relationship. The story line is progressing leaving me wondering what the heck is next and squealing like a school girl!!! I'm hooked, keep writing and I will keep buying and if you haven't read these DO IT!! On the short side, because I want so much more, but I never get bored with any of it. Sucks me in till I'm wanting more!

Siren's Song continues a highly entertaining series. I still love Leda, Nero and all the side character's. I like how Jace (the head of the Legion Brats) is developing. The plot in this particular story was interesting, giving us more exposure to the Pilgrims and to an old battle site.For all that the story was entertaining (and I will be continuing the series), there are a few things that are starting to bother me. Most of them have to do with the depth of the world and the story. We're missing a lot of details and it's starting to feel like we're getting the cliff notes version of the story, rather than the whole story. We don't know much about the different abilities that come with each level of the Legion. We mostly find them out one a book and they're mostly glossed over. Vampire's kiss - you become vampire like. Ok, so what does that mean exactly? I'm normally not one to wish for more exposition, but this book could certainly use a bit more. I want to know more about how the world works.I wish more time had been spent on Leda's experiences in the Lost City. There were hints of it, but I would have loved more. The ending was pretty awesome though, especially a few of the things that got revealed.

I've been wanting to childishly sing that forever! You could have thrown a giant brick at Leda that says "YOU BELONG TO HIM WHETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT", and she still might not have gotten the message until Calli points out that his actions are described in a book he's given her. Now she also knows Nero's father, under strange circumstances.But is someone trying to kill Leda? Trying to keep her from finding out where she really comes from? Or just trying to keep her from getting better and finding her brother. And who are these people of whom she has memories from a battle 200 years ago?Once again, Ella Summers brings us a very quick and delightful read. The action is fast-paced, characters quirky, and fun trouble in the best way which keeps the story moving. I do appreciate an afternoon read & this series is perfect for it.

Leda still has no filter. She and Nero are still...flirting with one another. A power hungry angel takes over the New York offices...I so hope it’s truly temporarily. Leda has to secretly uncover hidden relics before the bad guys do. Just another day for a Legion soldier in training!The Legion series has really grown on me! I love the snark, the familial relationships, and the Legion politics are cut throat, yet interesting. Nero has shown the most character growth since the beginning, but Leda is slowly getting there. She actually bit her tongue a few times-improvement goals!

If you love women, and men who show strong characteristics, then read these stories. So well written, each person with their own story. I can not wait to delve into the next book! Yes, I have a tendency to use lots of exclamation points when I am excited about well written storylines. Action from beginning to end. Ella Summers does not waste words describing fluff. She gets right to the good stuff, action versus reaction.

High octane adventures continue in this fabulous installment. The fights are more vicious, the magic more potent, the intrigue more complex and romance is sweeter and deeper. I can't wait for the next book!

The author's writing has really improved by this book. There is a much better flow between the action and the dialogue, and I felt like there was more fullness in the setting and in development of the lesser characters like Drake. I still enjoy the premise of this series and I am enjoying the characters. I appreciated that Leda seemed to be maturing a bit more in this book, she seems to be developing more self-control and magic skills.

This was an okay read."The Obstruction of Emma Goldsworthy" is the third book in the "Get Out" series and I haven't read the first two books. This can be read as a standalone as the author did a decent job relaying the important info but I could tell I was missing out on a good amount of backstory, too.This time we follow Emma, who is a twenty-year-old single lesbian and a university level field hockey player whose goal it is to climb the professional sports ladder.The storyline is a mix of her romantic pursuit of the costumed stranger she met at a party months before, dealing with her ex who's come back into the picture, and supporting her gay male friends through their drama. Though the book has a sports theme, we basically see none of it in action. All plot lines have something to do with relationships or maturing.Emma herself is a snarky character fighting her insecurities and falling in love at the same time. She stands out as a good friend.The story was entertaining enough and I liked the geeky elements that cropped in with cosplay. It was also nice to see lesbians and gay men in strong friendships and getting along. For whatever reason, I rarely see this reflected in lesfic.Unfortunately, I thought Emma's love interest ended up being fairly generic and there's a bit of instalust/love (minus the "I love you" declarations) but the author at least made fun of it and actually chalked it up to being swept up in the endorphins of a new relationship. Note, the sex scenes are all fade to black. Emma is only twenty and, on one hand, I could see some immaturity in the spats she'd have with her girlfriend but, at the same time, Hallelujah! Emma and her beau worked out their differences IN the fights. How often have I seen this in lesfic? Uh, once before?This is a male author which in no way detracted from the quality or authenticity of the story and perhaps was a saving grace in avoiding lesbian tropes that we see so often. He also happened to have Emma make a menstrual period joke. Amazing!The overall takeaway was that this was a cute and somewhat sweet story with some snark and friendship drama. 3.5 stars.

Emma is trying to make sense of the world, be a good person, and find true love.... in this gently hilarious book, that's not easy! Mr Kennedy has a gift for introducing us to worlds that feel real, and people we want to meet. It's quite addictive.

About the Author

Francine Johnston is retired from the Department of Teacher Education at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro where she served as Director of Graduate Studies, Coordinator of the Reading Masters Program, and ran a clinic for struggling readers. Francine worked as a first grade teacher and reading specialist for 12 years before getting her doctorate at the University of Virginia where she first learned about a developmental approach to word study and worked with Dr. Marcia Invernizzi to develop word study materials and activities. She consults with school districts across the country and frequently serves as a professional development speaker. Francine is a co-author of many books, including Words Their Way: Word Study for Phonics, Vocabulary, and Spelling Instruction.   Donald R. Bear is Professor Emeritus in Literacy and Director of Literacy Centers at Iowa State University and University the University of Nevada, Reno. A former elementary teacher, Donald currently researches literacy development with a special interest in students who speak different languages and he partners with schools and districts to think about how to assess and conduct literacy instruction.   Marcia Invernizzi is Henderson Professor of Reading Education in the Curry School of Education at the University of Virginia. She and her multilingual doctoral students enjoy exploring developmental universals in non-English orthographies. While I really love Words Their Way and I sincerely appreciate the publishers creating word sorts, the digital book is absolutely useless. I am quite upset that I have not been able to figure out a way to actually print the sorts for my students. I sincerely wish I would have just bought the hard copy and not wasted my money. Amazon, please fix this! :-(

When I was a classroom teacher, I used many of the strategies taught in this book. They are still an awesome way to teach spelling. The only complaint I have about this book (and the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars) is because frequently the book refers to material found elsewhere. It seems as though these references are to another one of their books. If the references are actually to material in this book,it's not at all clear.

I use this resource in my 4th-grade classroom. The sorts are developmentally appropriate for my students and the teacher's instructions are clear and offer extension ideas.

Using this curriculum with my 10 year old. He both enjoys it and seems to be catching on to the spelling patterns, finally!

It's a perfect but but not a great kindle buy. I needed it to work with my child on her words while in India but the kindle version doesn't allow you to print the sheets she needs.

There is no better way to engage students in word study than Words Their Way! Of all the instructional tools in my closet, this is the one I take every where I go!

This is the best vocabulary instruction program out there!!!

The book was exactly what I expected. No complaints here.

I am still reading this book but I am constantly amazed and transfixed by the words of Yahshua, King of Kings. I do believe Miryam Magdala was his Beloved and there is nothing blasphemous about a rabbi/teacher being married or bearing children. Religion is the murderer. Truth is the Christ's message not creating another religion. Pistis Sophia is a book that the religious Jesuits tried to destroy but the Gnostics and the Cathars' beliefs and teachings became revealed for all the truth seekers to delve into and be truly free. Don't be afraid of this book if you truly love Yahshua Messiah.

I don't know whether Jesus is the one who actually gave this to his disciples or even if it was his disciples who wrote it but there are some very interesting verses in their dealing with repentance that I find interesting whether it's gospel or not I cannot say that's not my job but I can say it is a really nice book well-constructed and worth the money for those of us who are looking for deeper meaning in true gospel and scripture. I received it fast and shipper packaged it very well. Happy with my purchase

A wonderful document of a transitional period between earlier Greek and Egyptian mythology and those of emerging Christian sects. The Kindle scan was a bit sloppy and lacks the margin notes of the original. I switched back and forth between Kindle and a web page that was much cleaner and had a better presentation.
