It's rare that I ever finish a book in a day, or that a story will cause me to drop everything and just do nothing but keep reading, but Witchmark did that for me. I loved this book so much. It is captivating and romantic - it's like if Downton Abbey had magic and allowed it's LGBTQ characters to have an actual romance. Once you start reading Witchmark, there's really no stopping. It's my new obsession. I need a sequel to this like, yesterday. I need at least four books in this series right fricking now. Love it love it love it love it love it love it. More please. My only regret reading the ARC is that it will make the wait for a sequel so much longer.I need more. Miles/Tristan forever, damn it!
I bought this on a recommendation and was disappointed when I started reading it to find the romance more centered than I usually prefer and the good/bad distinctions a little overly discrete. It's readable and engaging so I didn't consider DNFing but was sort of meh.But she flips the script several times. The story starts with an outcast member of the ruling class discovering the trail of a possible conspiracy. But each new piece of the conspiracy (a big corporate/government allegory) tilts his worldview a bit and changes how he sees things. And each change complicates his relationships with society and his past.If I have criticisms they are mostly that the romance was too saccharine for my tastes, and the love interest entirely too perfect. But the world building was excellent and much more complex than you'll expect from the first chapters.
I read a lot of science fiction and I must say I enjoyed this book immensely! Right from the first page, I was hooked. The characters are carefully drawn and you are immediately immersed in a very real world. I believe this will be considered a classic and a sure Hugo contender!
Book Review: Witchmark by CL PolkRich magicians are fine. Poor ones are not to be tolerated, and their proper place is to serve as a stool to step on for the rich to climb to greater heights. That is the premise of Witchmark, which takes place in an early 20th century England-like country fighting a war on the continent against undesirables. I appreciate the novel take that magic is not for kids but rather the exclusive purview of grownups who have Serious Business to take care of. Caricatural mean industrialists, as usual, wish to prolong the war and line their pockets. The good guys, who want freedom to live and love, are trying to ferret out the truth and are trying to stay one step ahead of the bad guys bent on eliminating truth and goodness: sounds like a standard plot but there are refreshing takes on the concept and the weaving of the magic elements into the storyline is well done and imaginative. The ending is a little stretched but kept my interest.
What a wonderful novel! I had so much fun reading it. The world within Witchmark's pages is captivating, as are the main characters. I was completely absorbed. Interesting concept, charm in spades, and a mystery that I just could not figure out (usually a rarity, so a super grand surprise!){SPOILERS BELOW}My only quibble (and they are minor and in no way blemish my enjoyment), I felt the build up to the romance was enchanting but the payoff a bit lacking (very "fade to black"). I don't need "penny romance novel" levels of detail, but I was left wanting in that arena. My second wish is that the sequel would focus on the main characters in Witchmark, not the sister, whom, alas, I never warmed to. I felt she was never fully redeemed, so I'm not too keen on an entire book devoted to her.All in all...Perfect way to spend a rainy afternoon!
Witchmark is a romp through a landscape that is at once familiar and at the same time strange. I loved the urban fantasy sensibility in a post WWI world (though this is not our world). I fell deeply in love with Miles and Tristan's relationship. The love scenes were expertly and sensuously drawn. I am writing this review a few weeks after I read the book and what remains with me most vividly is the romance between Miles and Tristan. Their love scenes were sweet and erotic. The world she creates is intriguing and I'd like to see more of it in subsequent books. We are focused so tightly on the characters that we do not see much of the geopolitics of this world, though it is clear that they are critically important. It leaves a lot of room for future books to explore and I hope she will. There is a hopeful vibe that builds through the book as the characters deal with the consequences of war and of the unfairness of life. It is as if emerging from a nightmare and blinking at the warm light filtering into the room. This is a good book, a fast read, and definitely enjoyable. It drew me in and kept me there until I finished. Recommended.
This was on my want-to-read list for months, and I finally got down to buying it. It was fast paced. The story plunges you into a murder mystery from the very first chapter. The book is about power: both metaphorical and literal. We follow in the footsteps of Miles who is in hiding at the beginning of the story. He is a psychiatrist, and also a witch. There are many mysteries that unfold as you go through the book. This makes the plot complex - too much so and at times I was confused. The social structure was rather difficult to understand and the backstories and explanations were few and far between. However, if you do read until the end all the threads fall into place in a spectacular, explosive finale.I did not know it was categorized under LGBT when I started reading it, so the relationship between Miles and Tristan was a surprise. There was also very little humour or wit - which I felt was lacking.Nevertheless, I must admit this is a gripping tale and I look forward to the next installment.
