THE BOOK WAS A FAST, EASY READ (SINCE IT IS FOR YOUNG READERS). I READ EACH PAGE EXCITED ABOUT HOW, WHY AND WHAT THE HELL!THE STORY ENDS WITH A SOLUTION, BUT LEAVES YOU WANTING SO MUCH MORE!I AM GOING TO PICK UP THE SECOND ONE . . . HOPE IT IS A GOOD AS THE FIRST.

In our contemporary everyday society communities have play stations, cell phones, iPads, tablets and other electronic gadgets. It seems many environments retain few traditions, such as book reading. Nevertheless, there are still ways to find old fashion entertainment. The book City of Ember provides good clean fun. It also takes you to the past while connecting with the potential future. The plot takes place underground. Readers discover that a city was built within mother earth's womb, beneath the outer surface of our planet. It was built by “builders.” The builders are central to the premise of creation. It was the builders who constructed Ember City. They did this to protect members of mankind after some kind of catastrophe took place. Catastrophe required mankind to have shelter. The book includes three principal characters. There is the shy LIna, the child Poppy and the explorative boy Doon. These three individuals are the principal individuals in a community of people in a science fiction city that oscillates around dark and light.A grandmother provides an education about compassion as readers learn about memory loss within a cherished family. Doon’s father gives his son knowledge about being inquisitive. These positive traits exemplify positive family potential. There is nearly nonstop mystery. The mystery is correlated with adventure. This is a book which not merely stimulates reading skills in children, it also elicits excitement, in both adult and youthful readerships. Ember City is a positive type of tool that can be passed on from one family member to the next. It teaches about responsibilities, concern for others and the value of exploration. it’s about how to bring light into darkness. In addition to sections containing moral values and hope, there are aspects about to the vile of evil. This book is not only a teacher, it can kindle a love for reading. It’s a win-win item. The reader is exposed to children. These kids are in the age bracket of 12. That’s when they are faced with something like a graduation; jobs are being handed down with titles. The reader learns that they will labor at their job classification until old age. Lina and Doon switch job classifications. The girl becomes an messenger. This enables her to extract more news and information than otherwise would be possible. The boy gets to work fixing piping that runs throughout the underground city. The boy is able to explore various underground tunnels and search for salvation. It is here where readers are also introduced to the mayor of Ember City and his disciples (or cohorts). At first one simply thinks they are typical politicians. Later, it is discovered they hoard and steal precious food. This is completely immoral because the city’s food supply is being reduced. In the meantime, the rest of the citizens are facing the calamity of reductions. The reader is witnessing a potential future society, or at least the give-and-takes within community.Further, the generator that produces lighting for society is starting to malfunction. As a result, there is a reduction of lighting. Citizens of that unique underground settlement are sporadically left in the dark. It makes a person wonder what can be done. This can also make readers appreciate all of our electrical benefits. Also, it is here that the reader ponders about solving the problem of simple meals. Moreover, Ember City provides food for thought about what to do when you are left in the dark. You’ll have to read the book to discover the trail of tunnels that lead to the ending. However, can you possibly imagine not knowing that there’s a sun that provides light? This book demonstrates how people can be afraid, brave and also extraordinarily curious. It provides food for thought about the circumstances of choosing job professions, changing environment and society. In a way Ember City is more than an exciting book that can rekindle a love of reading; it not only provides entertainment and is a fun read, it has popular ratings by both adults and children. It can be a cement for family togetherness, understandings and open communique.

The Books of Ember series was very enjoyable. Easy to read and full of adventure. The first second and fourth books were my favorite, but the third (a prequel to the first and second) wasn't nearly as good. However, at the end of the fourth book, you realize why the third book was necessary. This series is probably appropriate for 4th grade and up. It is also full of good life lessons, like - life isn't easy but you can be happy even if it's hard. It also puts a lot of value on being courageous, resourceful, and loyal. Read it. Read it. Read it.

What a breathtaking book! The detail is amazing and it completely brought the book to life, the storyline is very creative and inventive. This book is about the adventurous, courageous, and shy Lina, who lives in a small, rubbish, and dirty town, that hasn't seen natural light since... ever. So, Lina is determined to find some sort of light, to help her city, that is run by a selfish mayor, who gets everything to himself. In fact, Lina discovers a small closet in the pipe works while visiting a friend on assignment day, inside that small closet is a lifetime supply of canned goods, that some people have never even had in their town. She finds out that her mayor secretly takes his "break" in that closet to have all the goods to himself, so she wonders... "What if I found out more" so Lina, without thinking twice, tries and finds out more. She searches all over the pipe works for more information, she finds a key, her new friend Doon, and some determination to find out what this key leads to. Is it the key to a new city? Will Lina and Doon find light?Read this dramatic and climactic book to find out!

In 1998 it was observed that the expansion of the Universe, known since 1913, is in fact accelerating. Not too long ago mainstream cosomology had believed that the expansion of the Universe was slowing down, and the only question was whether the attractive force of gravity would be enough to halt or perhaps even reverse the expansion. The 1998 observations thus set cosmology back on its haunches... engendering much new (speculative) thought. If you want an update on the new cosmology, this book is probably not what you want, for it turns out that Livio's main theme is Scientific Beauty. By that he means that in order to be valid a scientific theory must be beatiful, must be:1. Simple 2. Symmetric 3. CopernicianAlthough he recognises that to some extent his definition is arbitrary he hopes to persuade us that his definition is reasonable. He even goes so far as to offer his grand definition gussied up as THE COSMOLOGICAL AESTHETIC PRINCIPLE.I had two problems with this book:1. Livio does not distinguish between beauty and truth. Aristotle found the symmetry of circles to be beautiful and invented a model of the universe in which planetary orbits were perfect circles. It was beautiful, but turned out to be unrelated to reality. Livio spends a good deal of his book discussing what he (and others) want to see in the Universe. Cosmologies are evaluated based on beauty - and it is easy to lose sight that we also want to know whether they represent reality. A theory may be beautiful and wrong.2. Livio's discussion of various cosmologic theories is disjointed and fragmented. He says one thing on one page, and contradicts himself 50 pages later. This necessitates a great deal of flipping back and forth. Sometimes it then dawns on the reader that Livio is talking about a slightly different definitions. At other times we are just left wondering. Example: Livio tells us that inflation theory and observations strongly suggest that Omega is close to or exactly unity. Elsewhere he explains that this means the Universe is flat. Yet the 1998 observations of the accelerating expansion would seem to mean that the Universe is open, the geometry is negative. Perhaps all of the above seeming contradictory statements can be true at the same time, but Livio does not elaborate.I understand Livio's desire to avoid the dread mathematical equation for the lay public. There are, however, professionals in other fields who desire to become familiar with the latest is cosmology. Some concepts are made more clear by an equation or two. This would have been a much stronger book if he would have included, perhaps as optional explanatory notes, explanations that are a bit more complete than you get with words alone. This would have necessitated an equation or two but would have made the book much more valuable. It is interesting to see that thinkers in religion and cosmology both indulge themselves in the irrefutable hypothesis. If you want to pledge allegiance to, say, Eternal Inflation in which our Universe was ten to the hundredth power in line for creation, you need every bit as much faith as you do if you are enamoured with the Biblical Creation Myth.Punchline: If you want a brief review of the old cosmology as well as an introduction to what is currently going on - there has to be a better book out there somewhere.Dr. Roode proode@pol.net

Pure beauty. This is a remarkable piece of knowledge. It summarizes the human knowledge of physics by year ~2000. Wonderful read.

A cosmologist and art fanatic, Mario Livio, elegantly tells the general reader about the recent observational finding that the expansion of the universe is speeding up contrary to the long-held belief of slowing-down expansion. He stresses the effect of this finding on the beauty of the fundamental theory of the universe; or rather the central theme of the book is that beauty.Livio clearly explains his requirements for the beauty in physical and cosmological theories: symmetry, simplicity, and the Copernican principle (we are nothing special). According to the author, the tentative discovery of the accelerating expansion of the universe poses a frightening challenge to the beauty of the final theory by raising difficult questions about the non-zero value of the cosmological constant (or the energy of the vacuum). From the viewpoint of the Copernican principle Livio rejects resorting to the anthropic principle for giving a quick answer to those questions. The story told about the recent finding of extrasolar planets is intriguing and helps strengthen the basis of the expanding Copernican principle. The book is so good that I am tempted to write all of its minor deficiencies I have noticed: The explanation of the inflationary model is not very understandable as the author himself admits in the book. The author's bottom line for Carter's argument about the rarity of extraterrestrial intelligent civilization is rather confusing, because the latter's argument seems simply wrong due to the contradiction of his conclusion to his two-possibility reasoning, aside from the dubiousness of his crucial assumption at the start. In the last chapter Livio writes about Wheeler's view of the participatory universe, but its distinction from the anthropic principle, if any, is not made clear. The first name of the Japanese physicist and cosmologist Katsuhiko Sato is misprinted as Katsuoko. It would have been much better to include bibliography of the books cited and the photographs of many paintings referred to.

I'm a big fan of Jill's, I listen to her podcast all the time and she was one of my inspirations for changing careers to become a Financial Advisor. So I was really excited to get her book. It was a quick, relatively easy read, that made what can be a pretty dry subject entertaining. Her writing style reminds me of sitting down with that friend who is going to tell you the truth even if it isn't what you want to hear, and isn't going to let you get away with your B.S. We all need a friend like that! Her advice is sound, leaning towards conservative, and she gives lots of great real-world examples on why you should prepare for life's unexpected challenges. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I think it may have helped me embrace portfolio rebalancing.

Everyone has done dumb things with their money, some dumber than others. Here, the author addresses her list of common mistakes and included stories with the financial impact of those mistakes, making what could be a very dry book more interesting. A lot of this is common sense, but as we all know, common sense isn't always so common. This was a fairly quick read with some good reminders.Thank you to Random House Publishing Group - Ballantine and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for my honest review.

I always appreciate the no-nonsense, smart advice that Jill brings to personal finance. Almost everyone will find something here that will help them make smarter decisions about money. Especially appreciated is Jill's practical approach to spending on higher education. Plus, a great does of humor and storytelling makes this a useful and delightful read.

That's my plan at least. This book is super easy to read and draws a lot of parallels to Suze Orman's 9 Steps to Financial Freedom in terms of the key lessons. The main difference is that Jill uses more anecdotes to show how it can all go wrong and offers tips for how to make sure you don't make these dumb mistakes.

Initially I didn’t know for whom this book was written. The answer is EVERYONE. From the person who doesn’t have money to “invest” to the high net worth individual who has a sophisticated money manager, Schlesinger’s book is for all. She not only tells you what you’re doing wrong and how to fix it, she tells you WHY. You won’t change your behavior if you don’t change your thinking --Schlesinger guides you through the process of understanding your financial psychology. It’s an incredibly valuable book that has universal application. The best part though is that Schlesinger is hilarious. And oh so honest.

I read The Dumb Things Smart People Do With Their Money: Thirteen Ways to Right Your Financial Wrongs and completely enjoyed the book. For someone like me, nearing retirement it is a valuable resource if only to serve as a check on the decisions my wife and I have made so far. There is a wealth of great advice delivered in an easy and fun to read style. Some of the mistakes we’ve already made can’t be undone but many of our choices can still be modified to greater advantage. I highly recommend this useful financial guide.

Jill delivers great advice in a great read! I am making this a mandatory book to read for my son. It isn't dumb to make financial mistakes but it is dumb not to be aware of what they are. Thanks for clearing up so many areas I've struggled with for years.

This book is an easy read and is filled with excellent advice and real life examples.

I have followed Marc Silber's YouTube videos for some time, and was excited to learn he had created an AYP book. Many of his interviews of celebrated photographers are outstanding. But this book is so sketchy and basic that I cannot recommend it to anyone above the most elementary beginner level. In fact, if you have ever held a camera in your hands, you are probably too advanced to benefit much from this book. Moreover, some of the advice is absolutely astonishing. Marc presents a chapter on getting your work out to be shared and includes approaching galleries to try to get them to exhibit your work, yet at several points in the book argues strongly against making your own prints. No one knows what you wanted your image to express more than you do, so handing that file over to someone else after you have fiddled with the basics of managing a photo that Marc presents about Lightroom would be laughed at by galleries and destroyed by online criticism. Unless you work to get a final print, you cannot truly understand or experience the subtleties of the photographic art. Marc himself points out that his initiation as a photographer came when he worked out prints in the darkroom as a teenager and gave up drug store processing himself. Yet he tells the reader not to make his/her own prints? Hard to believe, given the ready availability and rapidly declining cost of inkjet printing these days. Also, the image examples in this book are tiny and very weak at best. For comparison, see Bruce Barnbaum's recently updated The Art of Photography if you want to see superb example reproductions, as well as detailed explanations of image processing in both color and black and white. These (both images and detailed processing steps) do not exist in AYP. In summary, this slight book will advance no one's photography and I would suggest that you turn elsewhere to learn more about the art. A very disappointing effort.

I did find some nice pointers in the book, but it really didn't live up to my expectations when it comes to stepping up my photography. I do understand that getting to know a camera depends on the brand, but some of the things to know were not explained enough, in my opinion. I also was disappointed when I got to the section on processing the image. The author only covers Lightroom and although he mentions Photoshop in the book doesn't even mention it when it came to the processing section.

An excellent and practical photography book designed to help you take the pictures you like and want to make most. How to look and compose, understand your camera so it becomes second nature and doesn't get in the way. Fine exercises or practice drills also designed to making taking pictures natural and improve skills.I opened this book right to a diagram that showed me something I hadn't understood before. Sweet.Marc Silber's desire is for his handbook to help a photographer advance whether beginner, intermediate or advanced. The color quality of the photos used as examples are quite good which for some reason I expected less in a smaller format book made to be carried with you on your photo expeditions as modest or grand as you chose them to be.A unique well thought out approach!

I just received my copy of this well written, easy to understand book on photography. Finally, after reading countless books on the subject, someone has produced a no nonsense approach to understanding and moving ahead in the field of photographic artistry. I love the format and the handbook design. My hats off to Marc Silber for offering this book on advancing photography from beginning visualizations to mastering the whole process.

I'm a professional photographer, I've written my own guide and I must say Marc does an amazingly thorough job here and at such a great value. I think hobbyists and pros alike will be able to take away something new and inspiring from this book. Hot tip, check out the author's free YouTube channel called "Advancing Your Photography" and keep on shooting!

This was a very good book and a simple read. Read it through the first time and plannto keep it handy as a reference guide for future use. I suggest reading with a method of marking the most helpful items so you can easily reference when needed. This would be a great beginners guide for someone whose newer to photography. I've been doing it for a while so I knew the basics but still found several areas in the book to flag for later use.

Great Book. These photography tips are so easy to understand and apply. I appreciate getting them from a professional photography master. I keep it in my photo bag. Great for beginners and advanced alike.

A very fine collection of ideas that will improve any photographer's skills. Marc writes with a passion that inspires. I love his YouTube videos, too.

Soar, Adam, Soar recounts the odyssey author Rick Prashaw and his son, Adam - nee Rebecca – navigating through the joys and trials of youth and young adulthood, the perils of epilepsy, and the challenges of a transgender life. It tells of lives enriched, a life lost, and lives saved. It is an inspiring, eye-opening and thought-provoking read that the reader will put down a wiser person than when they picked it up.

Amazing read. I think Rick did a great job at helping Adam shine through on the pages with all the social media posts. I could not put this book down once I started reading it. As much as you'll laugh on some pages, they'll be tears on others. A truly bittersweet read.

... part way through.I'm a parent and so this book was bound to touch me. I didn't find the blurb entirely accurate, as I don't think I really 'saw' Rebecca or Adam whilst she/he was alive, because the tale seems to focus much more on the after, and about the child/YA introduced to us through his father's memories of events. That's not a criticism per se, just that I'd expected to have read more about what Rebecca/Adam was really like, with more 'in the moment' stuff. But, it was told with love and admiration, and that's not something that all parents of trans kids might do. I found it lovely that both parents were fully accepting of Rebecca/Adam's exploration of herself/himself and supportive of her/his decisions, though some of them might have found them with their fingers crossed a time or few. What made me cry in this is reading the letter from the recipient of Adam's heart. That touched me hugely, and I cried more than once. For someone to appreciate the gift of life like that, to want to say a heartfelt (no pun intended) thank you to those who helped make the gift possible, and how decent a person the recipient turned out to be, was humbling. It made me realise that I take my own health for granted to a degree and that it's time, at 49, for me to look around, take stock and make some decisions re health and older age.I think the book may perhaps have been tempered/muted, emotions wise, for Adam's dad to be able to tell the tale, for readers to be able to read and appreciate it, but it felt a little subdued. It's a private situation made willingly public by Adam's dad in writing this book, and yes, I do appreciate that, but at times I felt that it skimmed things rather than went into them in depth. I'd have liked to know more about Adam's thoughts that turned into actions; at times it felt as if his parents either didn't want to question him, or thought that he was going through a phase. This may be a slight spoiler, apologies, but to enter into a 'marriage' ceremony at such a young age, when a young child is involved, and for it to end shortly after, feels like a situation that did need a little tough love, or at least a 'let's sit down and talk about this', not with the aim of trying to change Adam's mind, but as supportive, caring, 'been there, done it, alone again' parents.Adam himself seemed a lot immature in some ways, but mature in others. I'm not sure he came across as a free spirit, but more as someone preoccupied with his own self, needs, wants, etc, which isn't that unusual for teens, from what I hear/read in pop culture. I have a son not that much older than Adam, and he's very different and an only child who's extremely close to both parents, and therefore as a family we didn't go through any of what Adam's dad portrays, so maybe I am being judgemental. If so, I don't mean to, but Adam's parents seemed rather out of his life in many ways, and yet his dad being his friend on social media, felt a little too much in his life in a way. Sorry if this is contradictory, but I'm also a Brit, and therefore, maybe a little more reserved than the Prashaws?I'm not sure I felt anything for Adam's mum, who seemed to be absent and yet not, his confidante and yet not, an unwitting creator of distance between Adam and his dad, and yet not. Was she present enough, post her divorce? Was Adam affected by their divorce and therefore rushed into life decisions? Whilst I'm glad that Adam was taken seriously by those involved medically in his transition, I did feel that everything seemed to be rushed and as if Adam was racing to a finish line. Yes, it's probably easy for me to say, having grown up a het female without a doubt about her gender and sexuality, but I have a few trans friends and things for them have progressed a lot slower, with one choosing to detransition after 5 years. And, it also makes me wonder, as did the posts about death that came to light after Adam's passing, if he had a premonition that his time on earth would be short?Overall, this is an interesting read, but I expected it to be more emotional and loving and moving. I just didn't get that feeling until after Adam's passing, and only once the heart recipient came into Adam's parents' lives. I don't think I felt that I knew, knew Adam, because he didn't shine through; I think for me, as I said above, the tale felt rather muted.ARC courtesy of the author, Dundurn and NetGalley, for my reading pleasure.

What a touching tribute by a loving father to his fascinating and resilient son. This book almost felt co-written as Adam's social media posts were incorporated into Prashaw's narrative. Adam's posts provided a unique insight into his struggles with growing up and epilepsy, and his journey to transitioning. No doubt Prashaw loved and respected his son, and gave him as much freedom as possible (given his medical condition) to become the wonderful person he was in his short life. Adam's life isn't sugar-coated, and I appreciated the realness with which Prashaw relates his story.
