I have loved to read about the Aztecs from junior high. Believe it or not from a textbook that covered the Spanish conquest in some detail.I was not familiar with the Triple Alliance until now . Nor did I know the Aztecs never referred to themselves as Aztec. The classes of people was informative & the way governing the empire was not essentially the emperor’s role .Also interesting was the diet of corn & beans which gave the Aztecs all the nutritional value needed . Meat was in short supply so they made do with what was available & what they could grow.So sad that this empire fell rather quickly after the Spanish arrived but not being immuned to new diseases the population slowly vanished. But, with archaeologists still studying & excavating this empire more information will be added to its knowledge base.Read this book to add to your knowledge of the Aztec empire & if you never read anything on the Aztecs this book a good place to start.Thank you Captivating History for another super book!!!
Really enjoyed reading this book from Captivating History on the Aztecs. It's my first time reading about their history, I knew very little of them previously, other than they were conquered by the Spanish. The book provides a good overview of how they came to be, of their rise and expansion and what lead to the fall of this powerful people group in a few short years. A big focus is the golden years of their history with an emphasis on explaining the story behind the story through a discussion of how their society was structured and the ensuing politics and pecking order within Aztec society. Daily life is discussed covering topics including agriculture to sports. The book concludes with helpful summary of the material covered within the book and a Bibliography for digger deeper into the history of this most interesting people group.
Another good book in this series. With the Aztecs there are enough ruins, images and writing that their history can be fairly well figured out. Their empire consisted of around 50 city-states and at one time reached about 3 million in population. The fairly well thrived until the Spanish soldiers arrived with their diseases and weapons and that was pretty much all she wrote for the Aztecs. Another aspect of this, of course, was that the Aztecs had their own enemies who allied with the Spanish to help defeat the Aztecs. The Aztecs, like the United States, actually consisted of an area with diverse climates and that, of course, had an effect on what people did to survive in those different areas. Two overriding characteristics were the concept of tribute and human sacrifice.Their society was stratified with a number of layers from the very top down to the slaves who, unlike those in the U.S., were able to leave slavery behind sometimes. The book also goes into the topics of the Aztec religion (many, many gods), the life of the commoners, how the leaders got elected, the stratification by wealth and even their sports. One thing I found very interesting was the Aztec concept of this being the fifth Earth, not the first.All-in-all another very well-done book for this series.
I learned more about the people and traditions that influenced the human sacrifice ,that is mostly what is highlighted in history books today. Learning more about their creation history and their version of heaven and hell, explains a lot of how and why they acted as they did. This book helped me understand their calendar system's better. I didn't really know that the Aztec's were mostly vegetarian. All in all it was a enjoyable and informative read.I received this book for free to review and loved it. Will be using this to supplement my home school mesoamerica history.
