This book is a superb reference to the history of Grandfather Mountain and the surrounding area. Mr. Johnson is an expert on the history of the mountain and the area, and his love and respect for the uniqueness of Grandfather Mountain and its ecology clearly shows throughout the book. This book is a great addition to the library of anyone interested in the history of Appalachia, who lives in the area, or who loves Grandfather Mountain.The book is well written and a joy to read. The photographs and illustrations are excellent and very helpful overall. There were only a few minor confusing photographs: On the photograph on page 7 - I'm sorry, but I just don't see the Face of Grandfather Mountain there. Perhaps a different picture would illustrate this better? On the photo on page 16, I guess the upper photo is showing what the swinging bridge site looked like before the bridge was there, but I had difficulty seeing where the bridge was later placed. I take it it was across the deepest hump in the ridge?Overall, the is a gem of a book. The history of the area and its colorful cast of characters and personalities that played a role in the discovery, settlement and coming of age of Grandfather Mountain is thoroughly covered. The final two chapters on hiking and photographing the Mountain are an added bonus.Highly recommended!

Grandfather Mountain ─ formed by a collision of continents 300 million years ago, located in the High Country corner of northwestern North Carolina, and with an elevation of 5,946 feet and a sprawling footprint that covers 50 square miles of southern Appalachian lowlands ─ is an epic mountain. As author Randy Johnson relates in his winning, impeccably researched, and richly illustrated Grandfather Mountain: The History and Guide to an Appalachian Icon (The University of North Carolina Press, 2016), it has evoked awe for centuries.In 1794, the French botanist André Michaux (1746-1802) sang “La Marseillaise” when he reached the top. In 1898, America’s most famous naturalist, John Muir (1838-1914), had a mystical moment when he reached its highest crag: “I couldn’t hold it in, and began to jump about and sing and glory in it all.” A snow squall in September 1913 caused two expert hikers, Donald Beeson and friend Charles Mathes, to tuck into a cave as they climbed Grandfather’s Attic Window Peak. “With the weather ‘blowing a hurricane’ and a fire blazing ‘in front of the cave mouth,’ Beeson wrote, ‘I doubt if I have ever enjoyed a supper more.’”A “love letter” to Johnson’s favorite mountain, the book actually is four or five books in one. This book made me laugh out loud. It is a wonderful read, period. But, if you grew up or live in New Orleans and saw a Lucky Dog vendor on just about every corner, you will love it. The title refers to the character in the book "Confederacy of Dunces"; a true classic. If you read this, you need to read the other, as well. They really tie-in together. Some people will read it and find it fantasy. For those of us lucky enough to grow up in that wonderful city on the Muddy Mississippi, you will read it and identify thoroughly. He makes many bricks with very little straw.Yet, there is a very tender side to his memoir, for Strahan never deprecates nor condemns even the most fricative people he must motivate. This book is part hilarious comedy, part tragedy. It is a walk on the edge that most of us will never experience. This book so accurately portrays the downtrodden and their trials and tribulations without judgement, pity or disrespect. I enjoyed every page. I hope we see more from this author, the true king and manager of the real-life confederacy of dunces.

As a "Baby Boomer" born in the early 1950s, I was raised on a steady diet of classic motion pictures from legendary directors such as Frank Capra, John Ford, and William Wyler. I'm a military history buff as well, so I was somewhat familiar with John Ford's role in documenting the Battle of Midway and D-Day. Despite that interest and awareness, I found "Five Came Back" to be truly educational, enlightening, and highly entertaining...My understanding of that era greatly increased.Although politics has always intruded upon cinematic art, I didn't realize the full extent governments influenced the content and release strategies of feature films before, during, and after World War II. The same goes for documentaries produced in that era; competition between the Allies over who could produce the best battlefield films? I was surprised to learn how many of those documentaries were chock full of re-staged battle scenes.One of the facts which surprised me the most was the deep-seated antipathy director John Ford had for one of his biggest stars, John Wayne, over Wayne's avoidance of military service during the war. Yes, the same John Wayne who so many folks today hold up as a "Great American Hero", likely based on all of his military film roles, actively kept himself out of "Harm's Way" for a variety of bogus reasons. When compared to the group of middle-aged directors who served with their combat camera crews on multiple bombing missions, hitting the beach at Normandy or Tarawa, or during the Battle of the Bulge, John Wayne was anything but heroic. Ford seemed to take great satisfaction in publicly calling out Wayne on movie sets for being a shirker.I truly enjoyed learning the back stories behind Oscar-winning films, and how "Dr. Seuss" got his start making raunchy training films for G.I.s. Even more intriguing, most of the directors who went to war experienced varying levels of PTSD, which had a marked effect on their postwar films."Five Came Back" is very well-written and also thoroughly documented, which doesn't always occur in books of this type. Author Mark Harris is very adept at smoothly switching subjects, and maintained a functional chronology in his narrative, which enhanced readibility. I highly recommend this book!

Harrishimself may not know the collective consciousness of the time but his excellentbook brought it back to me.Through the patriotism that infused thedirectors I felt the message we got in the news shots of war in theaters of thetime. Through the thoughts they had about the " total waste of war" and thedamage it did to our souls , I could feel the thoughts I had between the age of7 and 11.My uncles came alive again as the Directors moved through the warwith the different branches of service. When the war ended, luckily all myuncles and other relatives came home, at least two wounded, but alive. I knewHarold Russell and his family.Filming the atrocities of war so we could see it on the big screen on Saturdaymatinee made us all aware of the tremendous sacrifice of life. For what? Forone man to rule the world , I often thought .It was the pictures of thesouls in the death camps that raised the hackles! The final sickening straw!How , why ?The damage done to Director George Stevens who saw photographed ,and experienced, was so real and profound . I visualized once again thosehorrors. One can only imagine the soldiers who stepped up to soothe, calm, andcomfort the barely living survivors who rose from among stacks of dead bodies.I screamed once again inside me at the utter horror of evil men who walked theearth with us.The horrid cruelty of prisoners and the Red Cross by theJapanese came back and I remembered asking why the Emperor got away with this ?Harris answered that question after all these years. I still think the Emperorshould have done something to stop the war and should have paid a price forit.Through the lives of five men , the war came back and though these menwhere older than me by 39 plus or minus years , we shared a common collectiveconsciousness . I wonder if this is proof of that and how we make ourworld?I know none of us wanted war, but once we were in it we all were in itto win. Yes, when it was over we "had enough ".Yes, a great narrative ,stirring and so enveloping about the time. The investigation into Communism inHollywood and more are all there.Yes, a few tears peeked out as I closed thebook for the last time and put the era back to sleep in my mind , but not beforeI had made comparisons about the rise of Hitler with the rise of terrorism.History is repeating itself !

A must for sailors visiting Venezuela and Bonaire. New version is wire bound for easy use aboard. Well written and documented approaches to harbors and difficult anchorages. New version has been updated and corrected.

Really well written and organized. This book lives up to the great reputation that Chris Doyle has built. A great blend of sketch charts, color pictures of areas depicted in charts and good local information. I have not sailed there yet, but I feel this guide will make it much easier.

I have used excellent cruising guides by Chris Doyle while sailing in the eastern caribbean. This guide for Venezuela and Bonaire appears to be equally informative. The mini-charts are clear and provide enough guidance without being cluttered. The only reason I did not give the fifth start is that I have not used the guide in the waters for which it is written - perhaps next season.

During our sailing trip from Martinique to Venezuela we used this book especially because of the detailed and useful information about small harbours and beautyful beaches. I can recommend it very strongly.

This edition does not include all of Defoe's famous work, Robinson Crusoe. It has no cover page or publishing information, and ends at chapter 9 mid sentence. Literally the last page of the book ends mid-sentence, with a comma. Terrible. I am just now noting that the cover has a picture of a motorboat - definitely not available at the time of the setting of this book. This edition was negligently put together and should not be sold. Don't buy under any circumstances, it will only make you sad.

I would offer "0" stars, if possible. This edition is thin, without page numbers, and the book ended in the MIDDLE OF A SENTENCE! Obviously, it is not a legitimate copy, and is a fraud. If I had only purchased one copy, I would not be so upset, but I bought 17 copies for a book discussion group and cannot return them! This "publisher" is fraudulent and Amazon should not allow them to sell this knock-off of the real thing. VERY FRUSTRATING!

This is not a complete book; what a scam! It's about HALF of the book and it ends mid sentence. Also, why is there a motorboat with a Yamaha motor on the cover? This book took place in the 1600s; there were no Yamaha motors or motors of any sort at the time of this book. What a rip off! Also there is no publishing info other than "Made in the USA Lexington, KY 17 August 2017" I placed my order for this book on August 17, 2017. I guess they didn't have time to print the entire book???

If I could I would put zero stars. The book is incomplete!!!!!!!!!! I bought it for my son's homework and he realized after starting anoting in it that it was finishing in a middle of a sentence and he did not have the end! !!!

The version I got is the one with the motorboat on the cover (which makes no sense given this is set in the 1600's). First off, this book just starts on the very first page which was a little strange, but not really a problem. Next, it has no page numbers; I can deal with that as well - after all the book was inexpensive. But then the reason I really hate this version on the book, is that it ends mid-sentence in the middle of chapter ten. Which means this book is good for nothing except the trash.

I am writing a review of the audiobook version. I liked the narrator's presentation of the book. He has a good speaking voice and I've enjoyed other books he has narrated.As for the book, one cannot expect the writing style or narrative to match that of current day since it was written 300 years ago, I did enjoy the usage of certain words in the book, which are now considered archaic. That said, I found the story to be tedious, repetitive and overtly religious. While it probably helped sales of the book in England, I did not like the overly superior manner in which the English way of life is portrayed in the book. All other peoples and they way they live are deemed are inferior.Daniel Dafoe must have consumed the entire world's supply of commas for 10 or 20 years in writing this book. Nearly every sentence seems to contain a comma and many have multiple commas.

It is presumptuous of me to offer a review. The Canterbury Tales, the first English book, and Robinson Crusoe, the first English novel, may be to two most seminal books ever written in the English language.Let me just say that Robinson Crusoe is simply a great read. Do you need a story for the beach? This is it. Do you need a subject for you doctoral dissertation? This could also be it.Everyone should find something of interest in this adventure story. I strongly recommend it.

I used to work at Macmillan when Scribner was under the Macmillan umbrella and I knew when I bought this edition that it was the highest quality you can buy. The N.C. Wyeth illustrations are wonderful and they're on the very best high quality paper. All the Scribner Classics are well made. If you like classics, you'll love these editions. They are very well bound on very good paper and, as I just said, the illustrations are on the very best paper. For the price, you're getting a great deal. The only drawback: because it's such a high quality edition, you'll want to take very, very good care of it. Read it away from anything that might spill on it. Try to keep it away from any humidity. I know I'm sounding like a crazy book person and, okay, I probably am, but when you buy it, you'll see what I mean.

The classic male version of the Odd Couple transferred to the female gender does work but does require an adaptation of both mechanics and mental processes. The basic plot from the male version of two well-meaning friends, each with marriage breakups, agreeing to share an apartment with the subsequent discovery of incompatible living routines remains intact as does the theme of taking honest responsibility for one’s calculated offensive actions without a blame being shifted for self-justification purposes. Notable changes are the opening scene the poker game with beer being changed to trivial pursuit and more allusions to the subject of sex. However, there is the same amicable resolution of the progressively intolerable living situation at the end. In comparison of the two versions, an interesting difference in the male vs. female thought process can be detected, i.e. the male propensity to solve a problem a problem quickly vs. the female propensity to first decide how they feel about a problem before taking any steps toward its solution. On stage, this may make the female version more interesting. I elected for the four-star rating as I thought dialogue a little more pointed at the gender thought process difference would be a good enhance of the script. However, a good director should be able to make up the difference with creative non-verbal communication. This play is a wonderful comedy for small theaters both amateur and professional.

I always wanted to know what the original play was like, and this was it. I'd suggest reading the play and then watching it preformed on stage on YouTube.

Simon released his 20 year later version of the 1965 play and 1968 movie in book form only (to my knowledge) - and after the first spray of Lysol we get excited about where to see this "live", is there a DVD?Upside, the Funniest Trivial Pursuit game imaginable (the female "poker game"); early scenes really gut-bustin' as "Unger" (Florence) arrives at Olive's New York pad (we assume not far from the Central Park location of the guy's version) - and establishes material order while destroying everything non-material - namely, the psychological state of her best friends, especially the "female version" of "Murray the Cop", who, with whistle in hand, loses it before everyone else!Frankly, it's tough to separate Art Carney, Walter Matthau, Jack Klugman, Tony Randall, etc., from the proceedings, but the play does stand alone, ultimately.Downside: I think Olive ("Oscar") needs some more "believability"..I don't get that she's all that current-events or sports-minded. And unlike her male counterpart from 1965, she is *aware* that she is a slob (of sorts).Downside, continued: a long, draggy scene with the "Male" version of "The Pidgeon Sisters" - two Brothers from Spain, upstairs neighbors from the "old world", contrasting with the "new world" of independent American women. Stereotypical drivel, which would have been rejected by Burns and Allen in 1939, from page 60 to page 70. Neil...why?And there's more: "Japanese" and "African" references to make *Archie Bunker* wince.Overall, for deep or casual fans of Neil Simon, this is good, well-intentioned fun. May even wanna try it on for size at a theatre group.

I have been watching the current tv show. No one can replace or be better than klugman and Randall. Matthau and Lemon are a close second! Simon is a one of the great playwrights of American theater. This is a great jumping off point for any fan of the show.

My husband planned to audition for the role of Oscar Madison and wanted a copy of the play ASAP so he could go over the lines. It arrived only 3 days after I ordered it which gave him plenty of time to review the lines...and he got the part!!

Good book to use before you get there but same information for free on the Internet. I don't think we used it at all in Bermuda. Most hotels have some one to help guide you and local people are always willing to go out of there way to help. There is also a lot of literature for free there.

I purchased this book and the Foder's Bermuda book before traveling to Bermuda a while back. I used them both in advance of and during my trip. Helped immensely in our planning for what was a memorable trip!

You can always count on Frommer's to be as current as possible for a printed travel guide. I found great ideas for sites to visit that many of the online tourism sites neglected to mention. Most useful is the parish-by-parish guide. This is a must pack travel guide!

Very concise review of Bermuda with helpful tips and ratings for restaurants, hotels & things to do. Bermuda is small and it is easy to see many of the sights and do many of the things they suggest.

I am going to Bermuda for the first time and this book has been very helpful in planning my trip. I love these books.
