Love this map - wish they had the full series on the Cotswold Way walk. Arrived before promised date.

This is a terrific map -- easy to read and shows almost all of the small towns and villages -- highly recommended for travbel in the Cotswolds

I gives notations as to market towns, picturesque villages, pubs etc which is a help in planning. Use a larger scale map with it if going on small roads.

It was an excellent, extremely detailed map. It made it easy to navigate the back roads of the Cotswolds.

Got me through traipsing the Heart of England Way. Still had to ask directions once, but overall, if you're good at reading maps, this will do the trick. It opens large but is easy to see. Be sure it includes the section of the Cotswolds that you require.

THIS IS A GREAT MAP TO HELP YOU PLAN YOUR TRIP AND GET AROUND WHILST THERE.I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS.

Eactly what I needed.

Review

“If developers would rather not work through hundreds of pages but would prefer a hands-on experience in which they write small programs that quickly teach the language in a series of graduated projects, then Murach’s Beginning Java is the book I recommend.” --Andrew Binstock, Editor-in-Chief, Java Magazine

I love how well this guide is written and in plain English. The only misgiving I have is that I would prefer if there were a lot more exercises and a solution manual or online guide to the solutions.

I haven't found a Murach's book that I didn't like. Great explanations and much cheaper than other textbooks

Great book if your taking java classes but it needs better examples.

No problems.

Good book if you do not need any tech support, Mr. Murach is no help.

Thing I would have liked to know (just learning Java and IDE), but weren't available in the description: JAVA SE 8, NetBeans 8 ( I am learning with v7 of both), MySQL 5.6 ( I use PostgreSQL). Install instruction for Microsoft and Apple ( I use unix)UPDATE: Netbeans 7 can NOT open the sample code due to a binary versioning conflict. Price is $40.25 at author's site, but probably, taxes & shipping extra Download of example code requires name and email address registration and uses 'tracking' site to supply captcha. (I had to turn off 'Privacy Badger" for the registration to completely display. Just starting to use the book, I can't comment on content yet.

"Murach's Beginning Java with NetBeans" teaches Java and your first IDE (integrated development environment) at the same time. Like all Murach books, the book is heavy (600+ pages) and contains good review/labs at the end of each chapter. Including those that have you modify existing code. When I feature was introduced in a certain version of Java, the book points out which one.I really liked the intro including types of applications and keywords. I like the covering NetBeans as needed for specific concepts including code completion and the debugger. Including the “main project” concept which is something that makes me crazy in NetBeans! Similarly, good programming idioms are covered so readers can see patterns. I particularly liked how the code listings highlighted the relevant parts. I also liked the UML class diagram introduction. The only thing I noticed missing was the introduction of equals(), but not hashCode(). Since they should both be used together, I feel like they should have been covered together. Also, I disagreed with the comment about lambdas not being reusable. They can be assigned to a variable and reused that way. There's an Eclipse version of this book that came out this year. I reviewed it and both are of good quality. Eclipse is more marketable than NetBeans so I lean towards suggesting that version.---Disclosure: I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for writing this review on behalf of CodeRanch.

The body of knowledge when it comes to Java is quite vast and can be very intimidating to a beginner because it is hard to know where to begin. So many books try to be comprehensive reference manuals that they can cause someone new to Java to drown in information overload. Other Java books will explore a specialized API in great detail, but it can be hard to see the big picture.“Murach's Beginning Java” is a gentle introduction designed to enable beginners to learn the essential basics of the language. It comes in two editions: one for the NetBeans IDE and one for the Eclipse IDE. The two books are essentially the same except for the IDE you choose to develop with. There are two appendixes at the end of the book, one for Windows and other for Mac OS X, that show how to install Java and the respective IDE's so you can work the end-of-chapter exercises. As beginning books, they cover the basics you would expect: classes, methods, primitive types, operators, control statements, strings and arrays. It also covers basic object-oriented programming concepts including inheritance, interfaces, inner classes, enumerations and exceptions. The books employ the paired-pages format that Murach is known for: For each topic, the right page contains pictures, diagrams, code examples, and bullet points, while the left page contains the explanatory text.At the end of every chapter, there are a set of hands-on exercises that let you practice the concepts in that chapter. The practice exercises are quite important to do. So many other books either don't have practice problems at all, or if they do, they are so open-ended and time-consuming that it is hard to know if you got them right. Murach provides practice code that you download from their website. The problems typically involve using the IDE to make simple code modifications, and then running and debugging your changes. This is an important hands-on approach, since it not enough to learn a new language just by reading about it.As a beginning book, it also briefly mentions lambdas, generics and threads, but does not go very deep into those topics. Threads especially can be an involved topic that deserve a book of their own. It also has some basic coverage of the new date/time API. File I/O is limited to text files. Unfortunately, the only collection that was covered in any depth was a List, with minimal discussion of Maps and Sets. Sets and Maps are essential data structures that any Java developer should know, and I was quite disappointed the book did not cover them in much detail. It also seems strange the author would discuss the equals method but not hashCode which I feel should be discussed together.Surprisingly for a beginning book, it has coverage of JDBC in the later chapters by having the user install MySQL and MySQL Workbench in the later chapters. It also has an introduction to creating a graphical user interface using Swing. This book is a bit different from “Murach's Java Programming,” 4th edition in that the other book goes at a faster pace and covers more material like binary file I/O and XML. It is designed for more advanced programmers who are simply looking to pick up Java as a new language. The introductory book is designed more for people who are new to programming generally, not just Java. All-in-all the book succeeds in what it is trying to do. You won't be an expert after reading this book, but you will be in a better place to explore and understand the rest of the language.

Review

ADVANCE PRAISE FOR THE MAIN ENEMY"Risen, the journalistic outsider, and Bearden, the clandestine insider, have combined their insight and knowledge to give us a compelling account of the last fierce days of Cold War machinations between Soviet and American intelligence. This is history very up close and very personal.” --Seymour M. Hersh"Fascinating stuff . . . an inside view of a complex world . . . it doesn't get any better than this. It's great." --Robert De Niro"Some study war from an armchair; others through field glasses. The best go into the firing line. Milt Bearden of the CIA was one of those. For those of us who recall the Cold War, this is fascinating stuff. For those who are too young, read and learn."--Frederick Forsyth, author of The Day of the Jackal and The Dogs of War

From the Inside Flap

A landmark collaboration between a thirty-year veteran of the CIA and a Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist, The Main Enemy is the dramatic inside story of the CIA-KGB spy wars, told through the actions of the men who fought them.Based on hundreds of interviews with operatives from both sides, The Main Enemy puts us inside the heads of CIA officers as they dodge surveillance and walk into violent ambushes in Moscow. This is the story of the generation of spies who came of age in the shadow of the Cuban missile crisis and rose through the ranks to run the CIA and KGB in the last days of the Cold War. The clandestine operations they masterminded took them from the sewers of Moscow to the back streets of Baghdad, from Cairo and Havana to Prague and Berlin, but the action centers on Washington, starting in the infamous "Year of the Spy"--when, one by one, the CIA’s agents in Moscow began to be killed, up through to the very last man.Behind the scenes with the CIA's covert operations in Afghanistan, Milt Bearden led America to victory in the secret war against the Soviets, and for the first time he reveals here what he did and whom America backed, and why. Bearden was called back to Washington after the Soviets withdrew from Afghanistan and was made chief of the Soviet/East Euro-pean Division—just in time to witness the fall of the Berlin Wall, the revolutions that swept across Eastern Europe, and the implosion of the Soviet Union.Laced with startling revelations--about fail-safe top-secret back channels between the CIA and KGB, double and triple agents, covert operations in Berlin and Prague, and the fateful autumn of 1989--The Main Enemy is history at its action-packed best. From the Hardcover edition.

This fascinated me on 2 levels. First, a thru-the-keyhole view of what life is like for agents in 'denied' areas, e.g., Moscow, and 2nd an insider's take on history as it was made.I never understood, until I read this book, why the Soviets invaded Afghanistan. All I could think was "Oh, are you SERIOUS?? THAT'S what they thought??"Think you want to live your Walter Mitty dream and become a CIA agent? Yeah, me too. I got over it. Fast.Beardon is a wonderful raconteur but he lived it, some people died and not all of them physically. This is not entertainment. It is history in literal flesh and blood. At the end, when he tells the fascinating story of meeting his Russian counterparts after the wall fell, it's hard to remember that these were the people who put bullets in the heads of people we were responsible for.And guess what? Walker, Howard, Ames, Hanson - it's an incomplete list. There's another one out there. They know it. They just can't quite......

I do understand that this book had to be vetted by the CIA and so therefore it probably omits things that are still considered to be classified. That being said, I found it to be thoroughly interesting. If nothing else I came away with the impression that the CIA and KGB were like opposing football teams that beat the bejeezus out of each other on the field and yet have great respect for each other. I was also surprised to see how much communication there could be between the two. While they might have seen each other as mortal enemies, they also behaved with each other on the basis of professionalism. Whether or not it really was that way, I don’t know. But that’s the impression this book left with me. All-in-all, I recommend this book to anyone who wants a glimpse into how the CIA really operated. I give it 4 stars instead of 5 simply because I suspect that some things need be left unsaid.

At 536 pages, this reads like a novel covering the years 1985-1992, from CIA spy-versus-KGB spy, to Berlin Wall removal and USSR breakup, which dissolves the KGB. With Bearden as the CIA inside man and Risen as the journalist filling in gaps and KGB insiders filling in on the Russian side this book is difficult to put down. Traitors defect from both sides until there is little accomplished and both sides are tuning into CNN to get updates to the Russian collapse in early 1990's. Describing the 9 year Russian debacle in Afghanistan, along with US and Pakistan involvement is a major part of the book and also a major reason for Russia's bankruptcy. Bearden describes in some detail with real names how the CIA and KGB ran spies, dead drops, recruitment of opposing agents and a lot of other detail in the spy game. The biggest disappointment is how long it took to find the three main US traitors, Aldrich Ames, Robert Hanssen and Edward Howard with a fourth possible still unknown.

I must disclose that I am only 50% through this book and rate it five stars at this point. As a former counter-intelligence agent with the U. S. Army during the mid-50's, I have been, and always will be, very interested in the intelligence game between the U. S. and Russia.. At this point in the book, I definitely assess the content to be factual, i. e. a true account of what went on during the Cold War with respect to intelligence gathering, disinformation dissemination, propaganda, and decision-making both sides. Many mistakes were made by both governments and their intelligence agencies. The book also gives you an accurate insight into how Russia became involved in the Afghanistan war and our response to it. An ongoing conflict to this day as you know. I look forward to finishing the book and likely will do a follow up review at that time. I predict I will still rate it five stars and recommend the read at this time.Have finished the book. As predicted in my initial review above, overall I rate this book as an Amazon 5-star read. Among many other things, it gives you factual insight into the Berlin Wall, its subsequent destruction, the failure of Russia's invasion of Afghanistan, and the fall of the Soviet Union. A fascinating historical account of the intelligence game that went on between the United States and Russia during the Cold War.

This is an excellent work...almost too good! It seems that at the end of the Cold War, CIA rather naively agreed to the publishing of this book - which features operational details which had they been written about only 5 years earlier, would have earned a jail sentence. I couldnt help thinking as I turned its pages that the SVR/FSB also really enjoyed reading this book - heck, they even allowed Bearden to use the digraph/crypts of the assets! like GTTophat, etc. Apparently Bearden was one of those officers who sort of "lost it" at the end of the Cold War - a professional, Russian speaking officer that suddenly became a polyanna type the minute the Cold War ended.....The Russians were going to be our friends, kumbaya......I guess he kind of ignored about 1000 years of Russian history. And now, of course, we have seen the reversion to the mean with good old Russia.......

Rarely can an autobiographic author get out of their own way and accept some help. It is also rare that a co-author, even a knowledgeable one can preserve the authenticity of the stories participants. The authors were able to accomplish both in this story. They used good judgement as to the right level of detail to promote understanding without becoming tedious. I am not in the intelligence field, but I was able to appreciate the characters and stories. The authors seemed to resist the urge to sensationalize, be too proud or too humble in a way that would reduce their credibility. If the topic is of interest, I highly recommend this book. I would liken it to a Michael Shaara work in the sense that it is factual, but reads like a novel.

Hambly's James Asher series are all a cracking good read complete with memorable characters, historical detail and suspenseful action. But what gives them gravitas beyond the usual vampire story are the moral and ethical themes that underpin the tales. For a slightly different edge, it is Lydia who away from home initiates this adventure and Asher, laid low with illness who is at home in Oxford. World War 1 is in its second year and Lydia (shadowed by her pale guardian, Don Simon Ysidro) is at the front working at an advanced medical station. Lydia and Simon notice evidence of the "Others" that they encountered in Peking and relay the information home to James. Drawn into the investigation, James encounters these creatures in London. As expected, the historical background is accurate and engrossing.( I checked Maconochies war time stew and the St Pancras workhouse). Her descriptions of The Western Front give a genuine, pervasive horror to Lydia's situation. It intensifies when Hambly makes the logical conclusion that with all this misery and easy death, of course, vampires would be attracted to the battlefield. These vampires are not noble or glittery or nice. They are self-centred, cruel and childish in their simplistic view of the world. But even they can be enticed to help when their lives are at risk. The moral choices that Lydia, James and even Simon make are mirrored by the limited self-serving actions of Crowell, Francesca and Grippen. Perhaps the heart breaking and human decisions of the Irish nurse Meagher, and Dr. Lemoine reflect the choice of most of us. I cannot condemn their choice as I wonder what mine may have been.Finishing this book in a rush was like emerging from a black, dank hole. I was relieved to emerge into my clean safe world, but I would not miss this experience for anything.

Barbara Hambly is articulate and a wonderful story teller. A joy to read. I hope she is able to follow the adventures of James, Lydia, and Don Simon for many more years. Maybe Miranda will have adventures also.

I love Hambly's Asher series. If you're into vampires and haven't read "Those Who Hunt the Night", you're missing a classic. This latest book is set in the trench warfare of WW1 and includes misguided scientists, vicious vamps, and undercover intrigue. I read Hambly's books because of 2 things: she assumes women are capable of multiple roles and she does her historical research for great background flavor.

I love Barbara Hambly‘s James Asher Vampire Novel series and look forward to each new story. This one set during WW 1’s trench warfare is a disturbing setting but the storyline premise is truly horrific. Excellent scary storytelling that brings up questions about the morality of war and lesser of evils. Looking forward to another novel in this excellent series.

Hambly one again crafts a delectable tale, this time of vampires at the front in World War one. Her incomparable prose and brilliant characterization effortlessly transport the reader to the last spring of the war, when an inspired doctor and a desperate vampire collude to meld the Unliving and the Undead into a fearsome army to win the war for England and France. James and Lydia Asher with the enigmatic Don Simon Ysidro predict a different result of the release of hordes of revenants in the trenches, endless war and horrors undreamed. Together they seek to eliminate the spawning nightmare.

Only Hambly can get this much historical context in a vampire mystery, while revealing how vile and useless the entirety of WWI really was. Brilliant, a little sad, and truly excellent writing.

Set against the early stages of the Great War. Raises the question of the vampires vs. the evil of man.

I enjoy Hambly's vampire series - and it's interesting now that it's happening during WW1, with all the complications and opportunities that setting provides.
