Smelly does an excellent job explaining the errors of Calvinism. He did his homework. He does well going to the sources of Calvinistic theology and does well explaining what Calvinists believe according to Calvinist theologians. He then explains how the Calvinists are mistaken. As a former Calvinist of over 20 years, it was refreshing for me to read a good refutation of Calvinism from someone who clearly understands Calvinistic theology. I especially appreciate how Smelly refutes the most damaging doctrine of Calvinism - Perseverance of the Saints. The Calvinistic doctrine of Perseverance makes a live characterized by obedience necessary unto salvation. If faithful obedience is necessary unto salvation, then salvation is no more of grace alone.
Great book - uses Bible verses to tell the truth about Calvinism.
Excellent work. Biblical, logical and thorough.
I have read many books on Calvinism, however, this one stands out among them. I encourage everyone to buy this book and read it. Then pass it on and let your friends read it. I guarantee you will be blessed. The author writes this book in such a way as to captivate the reader within the first couple of pages. When you start reading this book, you will not want to put it down.
A VERY GOOD BOOK-WOULD RECOMMEND TO ANYONE
Written by an attorney in an organized, fair and comprehensive style. One of its strengths is that the definitions and descriptions of Calvinist beliefs come from quotes of recognized spokesmen for the movement. It is impossible to escape the meaning of their own writers.
The question has been asked many times: "Why are there so many different beliefs and denominations?" Someone wisely answered, “Because not everyone that believes in God and reads the Bible has the same rules for interpreting it."I have given Smelley's book a very high rating because he seeks to present the facts based on the rules of hermeneutics (the science of Bible interpretation) and the rules of law (sub-miscible evidence). In putting Calvinism on trial, he simply asks you, the jury, to examine the evidence. In mentioning his degrees, he alludes to the fact that he is qualified to respond to those who propagate Calvinism and Reformed doctrine. In a courtroom, all evidence that is presented must comply with the rules of law otherwise, it is deemed inadmissible. Smelley states his position from the very beginning, when he speaks of Calvinism as being outside the hermeneutical circle. He demonstrates decisively how proof-texts are used in presenting Reformed doctrine that violates the context, harmony, and grammatical rules of hermeneutics. The hermeneutical rules act like referees on a football field. They drop flags on plays when anyone commits a rules violation. It doesn’t matter whether they are defense or offense, Calvinist or non-Calvinist. If one does not abide by the referees decisions, they are removed from the game, and so it is in theological discussions. Like many people watching a football game, folks reading theological dialogues like these are not aware of all the rules that govern the rendering of Scripture. In Matthew Chapter 4, Jesus Christ Himself used the context rule and the harmony rule when rebuking Satan for misinterpreting God’s Word. 2 Timothy 2:15 compels those who preach and teach Scripture to study to show themselves approved onto God rightly dividing the Word of truth. One fine example of Smelley’s giving evidence of a doctrinal error is in the following text. In Ephesians 2:8 he proves that faith, in this verse, is not the gift of God as Calvinists contend. In their rendering of this verse, Reformed doctrine proposes that faith is a gift because man is not capable of believing by his own volition. A follower of Calvinism and Reformed doctrine is led to believe that the free will of man relieves God of His sovereignty. The truth is that the sovereignty of God will never be altered by any act of man's God-given free will. The Calvinist view of Ephesians 2:8 is a violation of a grammatical rule of hermeneutics. Before we examine that, let's ask a question: What is faith? The answer is twofold. First, saving faith is an act of the human heart generated by trust. It is subjective and abstract. God, in all His mighty and gracious acts, has proven that He is trustworthy; therefore, it is His will that we trust Him. Unbelief, or the lack of faith, is an act of the human heart that is self-centered and generated by pride or deception. Second, faith is objective and concrete. One contends for the faith (doctrinal faith) as a system of religious beliefs. How does one get faith? The answer is quite clear: Romans 10:17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. Both saving faith and doctrinal faith come from hearing the Word of God preached and taught. Now let’s take a look at Ephesians 2:8 and eliminate the confusion. For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: The confusion begins when one reads verse 8 and assumes that faith is the gift of God, which is a syntactical impossibility. What does that mean? The problem exists in the gender of faith and that. The common error is to match the antecedent for the pronoun that with faith. This is not possible because faith is of a feminine gender and that is in the neuter gender. In Greek, the pronoun and antecedent genders must match. Typically there are three points of view here: conjectural, conceptual, and contextual. Those of the conjectural point of view accept this rendering without grammatical support—they just believe faith is the gift of God because someone else has said it. Those of the conceptual view reject that faith is the gift of God and accept salvation as the conceptual antecedent for that. Those of the contextual view also reject that faith is the gift of God in verse 8 and believe that mercy in verse 4 is the neuter antecedent for the neuter that in verse 8.Hats off to Hutson Smelley! He does a good job by quoting authorities who have put in print what Calvinist and Reformed people accept as truth. He also does a good job at putting Scripture before the hermeneutical referees, giving the jurors an opportunity to look at the “replays†with the rules in focus. Referees applying the rules, without bias, on both side of the scrimmage line is what all spectators desire the most. This is what I liked best about Deconstructing Calvinism.Dave Weeks, Author of CHECKMATE for Mormons and Jehovah’s Witnesses
I was impressed especially when the author established as his first priority of business:1) The wide variations in positions that individuals who embrace Calvinism take. Therefore the author uses quotes from Calvinists who are considered primary voices of influence among Calvinists in general. This is a very wise move. You can hold a snowflake in your right hand, study it and describe "a snowflake". But then a snowflake in your left hand can argue that he is not like the one you described, therefore your description of snowflakes is illegitimate in total. You can see the subtitle strategy behind that argument is to d-legitimize anyone who does not embrace the doctrine as unqualified to identify the elements of its claims. The author is taking necessary precautions. But I still suspect that will not stop indoctrinated reviewers from claiming the author did not describe them in particular etc etc. Just be aware of the strategy behind that argument, and you won't be fooled by it.2) The very critical role that "customized definitions" of words and terms play in indoctrination.Experts; Steve Hassan, Mary Alice Chrnalogar, Thomas W. Keiser, and Jacqueline L. Keiser agree that many religious groups strategically deploy what it called "insider information". Insider information is the strategic use of "customized definitions" that are used within the teachings and doctrines of the group."Customized definitions" are given to words that are attractive to outsiders. Words such as "God's Love", "Salvation" "The Elect", "Sovereignty", "Evangelism", "Decree", "Free will", "Bible study" etc. The outsider is given to believe that "evangelism" is bringing someone to God. However, the "functionally true" definition of evangelism is drawing someone into discipleship into the group in order to make the group larger and stronger. This explains why such groups prey on people who are already Christians rather than wasting their time on lost souls. Hiding behind the mask of "evangelism", the true strategy is simply increasing membership thereby increasing the group's power base, while simultaneously decreasing the power base of opposing groups. Infiltration and domination behind the mask of "the Gospel".The religious group crafts "customized definitions" for words, which also function as a lens through which scripture is interpreted. Group evangelists, seeking to draw people into the group will, for example, invite them to a "bible study" on "God's love". What the indoctrinated doesn't know is the "functionally true" definition of "bible study" is "indoctrination session". And only well after the indoctrinated is successfully invested in the group with they learn the definition for "God's love", is God throwing outsiders into a lake of fire for pleasure.Insider definitions for words also become a critical tool for winning debates as a form of deceptive argumentation. E.g. "We hold that God, from the foundation of the earth "decrees" and "scripts" every man's thoughts words and actions. But not in such as way as God is the "author" of every man's thoughts words and actions. When logical conclusions of the doctrine become a hindrance to drawing in disciples, the group simply redefines words to mask the logical conclusion.3) Before going to the typical "TULIP" indoctrination tool, the author goes right to the foundation stone upon which the group's doctrine pivots. Theological Determinism.See wikipedia article on theological determinism. [quote: Perhaps the most prominent theologian to espouse hard theological determinism was John Calvin, with his formulation of predestination.]The philosophy of theological determinism is for John Calvin, the most sacred of all things. God's holiness, loving kindness, self-sacrificing character all play a secondary role under God's "Sovereignty" which is strategically pressed into the mold of theological determinism. In general, it functions as the standard of measure, against which every verse in the bible is to be interpreted. Any verse in the bible that does not affirm theological determinism must be "re-interpreted" so that it does. This then becomes the most critical and sacred rule of exegesis. As a final note I found it interesting that the author applies his expertise in law to the writing. I note that the academic achievements of John Calvin were Latin, Philosophy and law. This makes for very interesting play between the author and Calvin's belief system, which I enjoyed.Hudson Smelley resides in Houston with his wife and seven children.
