Great book. Beautiful paintings. Great ideas on what to paint, very colourful paintings. Lots of paintings. Very useful to loosen up your style and be more creative. It is not a step by step type of book, it gives tips and some explanations on the paintings but no steps. I was looking for a book to loosen up my style and this one I find it very useful, I wasn't looking for a step by step kind of book, so I am pleased with the book. I think it is for intermediate level if you want to tackle the paintings on your own. It could be for beginners who are taking lessons and use the paintings as inspiration or ideas on what to paint, since there are no step by step photos you would need a teacher if you are a beginner. I recommend this book.

Soraya French shows what beautiful paintings can be created with little composition and an explosions of colour. Her work has inspired me not to be so realistic.

I was able to look at several books about acrylics at the studio of a friend and decided to purchase this one. Though I have not read it all yet it has not disappointed. It covers a wide range of important (for me) topics, the medium of acrylic (advantages and disadvantages) itself, color, and the creative process of image making. There are also many examples of wonderful works by 5 different acrylic artists. Excellent resource.

This is a very exciting book with lots of ideas for using acrylics and other media such as acrylic inks.She shows how to incorporate many media to liven up your painting. She explains how she created each painting. Her DVD helps to show her free wheeling techniques that produce an interesting painting not a paint by number type of ordinary work. It took so long due to several simultaneous big projects in my family and business life; sometimes I could only manage a page or so at a time, sometimes no pages at all for several days. But the content of this book is so interesting, so relevant to the big patterns of Western history, that I was committed to reading every single word of it. As one specific example, I knew there was competition among Italian city-states, especially between Venice and Genoa, but I had no understanding of the depth, breadth, and violence of those struggles. As another, learning in detail the role of Venice nicely fleshes out one's knowledge of the third and fourth crusades. I am now reading Empires of the Sea, which was already on the shelves of my personal library, and now, having direct appreciation of this very fine author, I will without hesitation buy and read whatever he writes. If Mr. Crowley thinks it's relevant and interesting, chances are high I will too. I know from first-hand experience the time and labor of love that goes into such a writing project; your efforts, sir, are appreciated.

I primarily read this book to flesh out my understanding of the sack of Contantinople during the fourth crusade. Most books with a Byzantine focus seem to imply that it all fell on Enrico Dandolo; the wily old Doge with a grudge. This book does an outstanding job of giving intimate details of the fourth crusade. Crowley weaves together the intrigues, politics, and attitudes that led to this seminal event in Venetian (and Christian) history. The attack on Constantinople and the sack of the city are given in great, almost painful detail.What I found more fascinating is the after effects of the fourth crusade. How Venice controlled key islands in the Aegean that corresponded to their economic and strategic goals. It was all about trade by sea, and it is absolutely amazing to realize how focused the Venetians were. I think Crowley does a good job of demonstrating that Venice was the protoype for global economic thinking.He also demonstrates convincingly that Venice was also the prototype for colonialism backed by naval power. No, they did not always treat their subject states well since the goals were economic and strategic.Finally, the incremental rise of Ottoman sea power is contrasted with the slow decline of the Venetian state as the dominant naval power. I think Crowley did a great job in showing how the forgotten battles such as Negroponte had a huge impact on the morale and identity of Venice.My only complaint is the ending of the book. It is almost as if Mr. Crowley assumes that the reader's history must be adequate enough to know what happens next. The implication being that Venice continues to decline ultimately resulting in the horses of St. Mark's ending up in France as Napoleon takes northern Italy. Further, Crowley wrote the excellent book Empires of the Sea: The Siege of Malta, the Battle of Lepanto, and the Contest for the Center of the World. The events of this battle are only 50 or 60 years after the end of this book. Why not include more details linking to this battle and the events leading to it? I mean, he skims some of these events such as Cypress being taken by the Ottoman Empire. What is one more chapter between friends... right?All in all a great book that I enjoyed reading very much.

This book cleared up quite a few mysteries about Venice. There are frequent descriptions from original sources by contemporary chroniclers that bring the tumultuous history of Venice to life. I did not expect this book to be a page-turner but for me it was.The writing is clear and concise. I've been to Venice several times but this last visit was immeasurably enhanced by the visceral and dramatic knowledge contained herein. You'll never feel quite as casual strolling around Piazza San Marco, or shopping on the Rialto bridge after reading this book.Kudos to the author.

Author Roger Crowley has a solid command of his subject. He knows his oats. And he presents a large, complex history in a way that is at once accessible to the average reader (like me) and very interesting. He keeps us engaged.I was disappointed when the book was over. I wanted another few centuries of learning.One caution-I got the kindle version. At the end of the book and many many pages of period paintings and maps and such. I would rather have a physical book in my hand as the black and white shot of a magnificent painting isn't as cool.I have a much better understanding of Venice as a culture and as a city. There isn't anyplace like it.

I had been exploring the history of the Ottoman Empire right up to its fall as a result of the first world war. In the process I discovered that the Ottomans and Venice were engaged in a power struggle for several hundred years. Having recently visited Venice and its museums last November I was also intrigued by how this small enclave had been so powerful in the past. As a result of these issues I was looking forward to reading this book.I was not disappointed. It is well written and very easy to read. It filled in many gaps in my knowledge of history. It was also interesting to discover the extent to which the 4th Crusade was a major contributor the the decline of the Byzantine empire and the ultimate fall of Constantinople to the Ottomans. The fact that that crusade mainly ended up targeting christian city's that were regarded as competition by Venice was also enlightening as was Venice's constant war with Genoa .A well written fascinating book.

While not as comprehensive as its sister book "50 handbags that changed the world", this book is a decent recounting of notable dresses through the last century. It features the usual ("Some Like It Hot" steam vent dress, "Breakfast at Tiffany's" LBD, and so on) also features a far greater number of British designers than I was aware of. I haven't formally studied fashion so I can't really weigh an opinion on whether or not all of the designers and garments featured are as influential as the book states but it's still a fun read.

Found a couple errors in history, and would have selected some of the same and never would have thought of others...but it is a British production. Americans have a different perspective. One error was calling a famous actress Rita Hayward. We have Rita Hayworth and Susan Hayward. I think they meant Rita Hayworth. Also said the word "vintage" was not even invented in the 1960s. Come on! It's been used for a great many years! Perhaps they meant as relates to fashion ONLY. Still it's worth adding to the fashion library.

I was expecting a great coffee table book, and maybe provoke some discussion. It was ok. THere are some obvious ones in there, but they didn't really tell me WHY they changed the world. Was it fabric? DId it provoke social debate. For the older the entries (the flapper dress) yes they covered that, but I didn't see that in other entries.

Meh. Very small book and it only goes to the mid 2000's. Thought it would be a fun book for my fashion conscious daughter but really was not a hit.

Nicely designed piece of fluff with some iconic dresses, but most pictures unremarkable. Enjoyed reading through it once, but not enough there to look again. Would make a nice gift for a young person just getting into fashion.

The color, the font, the title, the simplicity, the Breakfast at Tiffany's wonderment of it all.I mean, stick Audrey Hepburn in a tiara on a striking mustard background and who wouldn't judge?This book is delicious. It beautifully outlines 50 dresses that made a "substantial impact in the world of design." And it does this well. The people at Design Museum know their stuff and you are bound to learn a thing or two (unless maybe you're a costume historian or professional Dressologist).We're not talking universe-altering-atom-splitting-rocket-curing-hunger-world-peacifying stuff, we're talking dresses.But they are amazing dresses that created long-standing trends in women's fashion. The FFF (Fifty Fabulous Frocks) reflected the politics of the day and put designers on the map. You will likely guess a couple of the creations that make the cut, but you may also be surprised by others. I think Betsey Johnson is notably and unforgivably absent, but nobody asked me...Design Museum gives a short explanations for each selection. But it's a somewhat text-booky read. I wish they would've hired a writer to zip up the copy to suit the beauty of the dresses and the photos. But all is forgiven, Design Museum.Go forth, if you love fashion, art, design, style, picture books, or mini coffee table books, it's a very pretty read. It's worth spending the money if in the industry or a hobbyist. Otherwise, a quick flip through will do the job nicely.

I’m a Software Developer and I’ve written many XSD files but it’s not a task I enjoy. I recently had to write another XSD file using nothing but source code written in a language I had never seen. When I was done, I was proud of my 1000+ line XSD file. Afterward, I questioned whether or not the XSD file was up to standard. We have the first edition of this book at work so I ordered this 2nd version. I’m the cover-to-cover type and as I progressed through the book’s exercises, I kept looking back at (and improving) my last XSD file. This book has shown me that I could be getting so much more information into and out of applications. Here are the main reasons that I gave the book 5 stars:1. Font: Basic stuff like this can kill a book. This book’s font is large and clear enough to read comfortably.2. Structure: The book is laid out in a logical fashion that makes it easy for someone to read cover-to-cover instead of simply using it as a reference book.3. Throughout the book there are sections titled ‘Design Hints’ that point out key design considerations. Furthermore, she dedicated chapters 21, 22, and 23 to design topics. Anyone can knock out a simple XSD file but to get the most functionality out of it, you need to design it properly. Introductory books like ‘XML Visual Quick Start Guide’ by Goldberg won’t give you that level of insight.That’s about as good as a book on XML schema is going to get.

My contribution walks an XML document and determines how its structure maps to its corresponding XML Schema. This book was very helpful as reference to understand XML Schema document structures and how they apply to tags in an XML document. It was very helpful to help me understand how global vs. local elements and attributes are merged together, how complex & simple types can be extended and restricted, and how namespaces in wildcard elements and attributes work. It is one of the better references I've read in years!

My review primarily pertains to the Kindle version of this product. It's practically useless in its current form. To process this kind of content, you have to move back and forth between many pages to put all the pieces together. The code examples often span multiple pages and so you have to read a little of the narrative and pan across multiple pages to see the sample content and then pan back several pages to continue the narrative. I needed the content in a hurry so I thought I could overlook the formatting issues described by others. You are not permitted to print pages from the Kindle to overcome these barriers. I feel like a hostage with no way to utilize what I paid for. After multiple attempts to glean information from it, I have lost hope and consider it a complete waste of money. I will probably purchase the printed book because the content appears to be highly valuable, if it is in a consumable format. I suspect I will rate the printed version quite high. If you need this content, purchase the printed version and make do with online resources until it arrives.

This is a great book. I have been using it to write an XML schema for a complex Xml synrax.

I have to start by saying it's difficult to make a book about XML appealing. The author has done a fairly decent job to make the book readable and understandable. This really is far more than a reference document, and it represents a huge undertaking.To elaborate:First, to write this book, the author must read the specification(s) (or at least significant parts of them). That alone is more than most people can tolerate. I'm pretty sure it could give the unprepared brain damage. If you don't believe me, try reading the W3C XML Schema specification yourself.Second, the book has the perspective of being a second edition based on the more 1.1 specification. Where possible, there are comparisons to notable changes from the first edition. This is actually helpful both in practice and for fundamental understanding.Third, there are occasional recommendations for usage and practice, again quite useful.I haven't seen a better all-around definitive guide.

This is a very good reference book for those who already have a good grasp of how all the pieces of XML schemata fit together. If you already have a good working grasp of XSD (and the tools used to create and test schemas) then this book will enable you to quickly remind yourself of how to make use of a particular XSD entity.But if you do not have a good conceptual overview of XML schemata and how their pieces relate to each other, then you should look elsewhere. The book provides a comprehensive body of reference material, a much smaller amount of extremely terse conceptual information, and essentially no illustrative tasks or examples. The point being that if you're hoping to learn XSD from this book, you probably won't. (And if you are the sort of person who could learn XSD from this book, you quite probably don't need the book...)In short, great reference but most definitely not intended to be a tutorial...

As preparation for my confirmation into the Episcopal church, my priest made this book required reading. "Do not be put off by the teen guide part of the title", he cautioned. How correct he was! In some ways, some concepts in the book might prove to be too difficult for a young teen to grasp.As a fledgling Episcopalian, I learned not only about the liturgy and sacraments, but also the origins and meanings of the various rituals that differ substantially from those I had been raised with in the Presbyterian church. As a lifelong Christian, I learned more about the Bible and how best to study it. I also came away with new feelings about prayer, that are not unique to the Episcopal church.The book was not only educational, but it fascinated me. Having just experienced Holy Week, for example, I learned why the Great Easter Vigil is the most important day in the Episcopal faith. The service itself is magnificent, but understanding its meaning made it even more dramatic and moving.Jenifer Gamber made the Episcopal church come alive for me. Her writing style made what could have been a dry subject fascinating. My Faith, My Life would make a great gift to new Episcopalians and to those who need a refresher course. Father Lou advised me well.

I purchased this book for the four teenagers in my youth confirmation class at an Episcopal Church in California. As I was reading the book, I reflected on my own confirmation class many years ago and discovered the only thing I remember about the class was the teacher's name - not that Holy Confirmation had anything to do with continuing a spiritual journey begun at Holy Baptism. It is my hope that the youth in my class will discover and appropriate for themselves a working lanugage of faith that will sustain them on their spiritual journey. Although much of the content of the book is historical and factual, it also presents the faith journey as a living reality - one to be embraced and lived in a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Teenagers have a great hunger for the spiritual life but often flounder in the modern trivia of life that consumes so much of their time and energy. This book will engage their minds and hearts, encourage them to live out their Baptismal Covenant in meaningful ways, be actively involved in the life of the congregation,and be a useful resource for them for years to come.

I bought this book for my 16 year old Godson. Kevin has spiritual depth, has been steadily involved with the Episcopal Church for about five years, and has a jumble of knowledge about the Church. My Faith, My Life is just right for Kevin. It sorts out the Christian faith, as understood in the Episcopal Church, the role of Scripture, the centrality of the Trinity for Episcopalians, the history of the Church, and the common practices of Episcopal liturgy. The language is clear and concise, written with teenagers in mind, in a friendly, easy style. It will be a pleasure to give the book to Kevin.At 183 pages, My Faith, My Life is a well-written, complete, and understandable introduction to the Episcopal Church. While right as an introduction for teenagers, it should prove just as valuable for adults seeking to understand the Episcopal Church. It provides provides the basics, a clear framework for understanding both the spiritual church and the organizational church. The framework should make it easier to integrate the sermons, lessons, readings, and other experiences in the Church into a consistent theology and sense of mission.

This book is really perfect as a preparation for confirmation, but it is by no means for teens only! It is a very readable, comprehensive and well-organized introduction to the Episcopal Church. I very much enjoyed reading it, and the adults in confirmation classes also praised it highly. I certainly recommend it to anyone who wants to know about the Episcopal Church--from whence we came, how we worship, what we believe, how the church is organized, and how we see our place in the Anglican Communion.

The book appeared to be a good buy for my granddaughter. Ir arrived promptly and I hope it was a good selection for her.

If you are looking for an engaging and relevant resource for either middle school or high school youth groups- look no further! This is the best resource I have found and is flexible enough to be right-sized into different length modules. I highly recommend it!

I ordered this book from New Paradigm Books thinking it was the hard cover displayed in the photo, however it was not. Instead I received the Global Edition, which is considered to be the same book just with a different cover. This is NOT the case. I looked up some of the practice problems from the hard cover, non-global edition displayed in the photo, to check if they matched up with the Global Edition that I received; I need this book for a class and imagine that the homework problems will be a main area of focus. The problems I randomly picked, which were throughout the chapters, were mostly the same, but NOT all of them matched up. Many of the units, i.e. velocity speeds and lengths, were different between the problems in the two books. Because of this experience, I am warning those who purchase this book to double check if they are ordering the hard cover or the soft cover Global Edition.The Global Edition does seem to explain things well and the examples given are step-by-step, which is nice. The diagrams and conversion factors provided also help clarify a lot of information.I gave this review 3 stars because shipping was fast (about 6 days when it was projected to be about 2 weeks) and the book was in good condition. Additionally, this is not a bad book based on my skimming through it, but if you require the hard cover for a class, the Global Edition may not work for you, depending on your professor and course objectives. Please be wary so you don't have to exchange the book as I am going to.

I'm taking three "fluids" classes this semester. This textbook is my favorite. I even asked the instructors if I could reference the charts/notes in this book during the test, instead of the official course book... because the references are far superior to the charts/tables in my other two text books.The other books are thicker, and have more explanations. But when you get down to it, as a reference book, this thin textbook has everything I need for all three classes.One of my classmates regrets returning this book for a refund, because he thought he wouldn't need it.

Great textbook, came in pristine mint condition. The book goes through everything my university course is covering & it's easy to understand. I had to return it though, because the Global version's practice problem have different values than the North America version. And when homework is 30% of the final grade, you better have the correct version of the textbook.

Robert L. Mott has done an amazing job in putting this book together. I walked into my fluid mechanics class knowing nothing about fluids and came out with fluid mechanics as my favorite course. This book is easy to follow and everything is pretty much put where it needs to be. The examples are explained in such detail and simple steps that you're able to solve the chapter problems easily. I really enjoyed this book and I know I'll still use it in my future courses.

This book covered everything pretty well. Most of the information presented was understandable and coherent, and the section on pumps was great as well as some of the frictional losses and Moody diagrams (in my opinion when considering the whole book).The only annoying thing was the way they labeled images, questions, and problems... for example problem 56 might refer you to image 65 or something silly like that... why not just stick the image with it and keep the number the same?

The book I received was rebound and claimed to be a 7th edition. After working several homework problems out I have discovered it is not a seventh edition. Many problems were wrong and did not match the 7th edition my instructor or other classmates have. The book was however delivered in a timely manner and looked in very nice condition. It's just not the 7th edition it claims to be.

Beware, not the same as the english edition. Language is fine, just problems are different.

This comprehensive text covereing fluid mechanics by Robert Mott is an excellent means to review basic fluid mechanics. The text, example solutions and diagrams are easy to follow in spite of not having examined the principles of fluid mechanics since the mid 60's. Mr Mott provides sufficiently detailed solutions and discussions.

My son loves these books. We started reading National Geographic Kids books when he was about six (he's nine now) and I can honestly say that these books have been instrumental in teaching him to read. His favorites are those from the "Weird, But True" series. We own the first five books in the series and have the ones not yet published on pre-order.One weekend last spring, our son actually read one entire 300 pg. book from this series to my husband and I over the course of two days - 50 pg.s three times a day until he'd finished. I mention this because last year my son was sent to a reading specialist because his teacher was concerned that he was reading below his age-level. Although I was happy for him to receive the extra attention from the specialist, I always doubted that he had any real problems reading because he read the Nat'l Geo books to us constantly. Thankfully, I was right. He no longer sees the reading specialist, reads above his grade-level, and even reads out-loud to his classmates at lunchtime.Why is this so important? Because kids are often labeled as poor readers when it's not that they can't read, but rather that they simply aren't interested in what they are being given to read. My teen-age step-daughter grew up thinking that she was a poor reader, too. That all changed when I gave her the Twilight Series. She read the last book, "Breaking Dawn," (756 pages) in less than 48 hours!There are several elements that make the Nat'l Geo Weird, But True series so appealing, particularly to elementary aged boys. The layouts are very simple, not cluttered. Each fact is only one or two sentences long. The font is much larger than what you would find in a typical chapter book designed for this age group. And the visual images are excellent - exciting, funny, interesting - they immediately draw the reader in, curious to find out more.As a parent, teacher, library volunteer, and chairperson of my son's Scholastic Book Fairs, all of the books in this series are ones that I have and will continue to recommend for children (especially boys) from pre-K through lower elementary!

My kids love these books! We have the first one and I bought the second and third ones. We haven’t read number 2 or 3 yet because I’m using them as Christmas presents bit if they are anything like the first, then they’re awesome. My kids want to reread the first one all the time. Very fun and interesting!

I am a grandmother and I love to learn things. That's why I love trivia. (Learning small facts about the world around us.) It's just so interesting. I love it and who doesn't want to learn more things,and "show off" a little for other people who end up saying,"that is so cool!",or "I never knew that!!" And it's a fun read for all ages. Buy it and you might learn something....no matter what your age. Good for kids or grownups. Easy to read too.

BEST READ EVER LEARNING SO MUCH HOPE THEY PUBLISH MORE.

We have every book in the series and they are all awesome. Both my kids (6 and 9 years old) truly ENJOY reading them. Then later they hear something that triggers a memory of a random, bizarre fact they read and they say, "Did you know that......?" I'm glad they have these books. They are really educational and fun to read. (I like reading them too!)

We bought these for our 8 year old daughter. She loved them, and all the crazy new facts she learned.

My kids really enjoy this little book. Very informative and funny too.

My 9 year old grangdaughter loves this book series. Easy read that let's her know and share fun facts that a lot of adults don't even know!

I've been following Archana's recipes from her blog Ministryofcurry.com..Her recipes are simple, authentic and Instant Pot has made them easier than ever.Cooking Indian food is time consuming and needs monitoring. But with Archana's simple recipes in the Instant Pot it is possible to enjoy authentic Indian food without the fuss.My favorite recipes are Chickpea curry, Red Kidney bean curry, Paneer and vegetable biryani, Paneer in spinach sauce, cabbage rice (from her blog) and sweet rice porridge.I just received my copy of the book and I highly recommend this book as it has got recipes for breakfast, main course and desserts. She has also included recipes for some accompaniments with the main course like raitas (yogurt based side dish). It's nice to see how she has covered some of the most popular recipes across India.If you are unfamiliar with Indian cooking the book provides information on spice blends and items you need to stock in your pantry. This book belongs on your kitchen counter!

This is such a wonderful cookbook. Being from India, my mother always cooked a majority of these recipes in this book. However, when I was at the age to learn, I would watch her, and try and write down the recipes. It was a palmful of this spice, a smaller palm of this spice, etc., etc. Never did I get the exact recipe from my mother. So when I would try out various recipes I wanted to have, before getting married, there was a lot of experimentation going on in my kitchen. Enter "The Essential Indian Instant Pot Cookbook". Such wonderful recipes, all laid out clearly and easily, and in front of me, and yes I can still experiment with the spices, as my nine year old son, does not like his Indian food 'too spicy', so we always have to tone down the spices for him, but still maintain the taste.The reference at the end of the book is a great shopping list when I go to various Indian/Oriental stores, and make sure I always have the right spices I might need in the days ahead.Thank you for writing this book, and as an Indian-American (yes I am an ABCD) and for those that might not know what I mean ABCD stands for American Born Confused Desi (Indian). It makes all those recipes I tried to learn years ago, a simple task these days!
