Seaweed Chronicles: A World at the Water’s Edge, by Susan Hand Shetterly

Review

“You might not expect unfettered passion on the topic of seaweed, but Shetterly is such a great storyteller that you find yourself following along eagerly.”—Mark Kurlansky “After reading Susan Hand Shetterly’s Seaweed Chronicles, chances are that you’ll look at sushi rolls and the brackish tangles of seaweed washed up on beaches in a new light. Seaweed Chronicles is a fascinating portrait of this valuable, increasingly threatened resource and a passionate plea for its wise management. It’s a beautiful book, both educational and inspirational . . . Shetterly is a wise, attentive observer, open to the wonders of nature. Although generally more lyrical than didactic, she helpfully frontloads the book with important facts about seaweeds. Seaweed Chronicles adds up to a persuasive and loving argument for 'a new model of how to manage ocean resources that doesn’t edge them toward oblivion.'”—Heller McAlpin, Washington Post   “Ms. Shetterly writes beautifully about the interconnectedness of humans and animals and the natural environment that we share. The twinned concepts of community and belonging are central to this story. By exploring the land where we live, we can begin to understand our place in the world. Seaweed Chronicles is an elegy to environmentalism and to the individuals in Ms. Shetterly’s local community who are committed to the stewardship of coastal Maine’s natural habitat. In the end, this is not about turning back the clock or calling for a global shift in behavior, but about a philosophy. Seaweed Chronicles is a local affair and, as such, gives more justice to Ms. Shetterly’s endeavor and closes in on something real. 'Attention,' Simone Weil once wrote, 'is the rarest and purest form of generosity.' Ms. Shetterly is simply urging us to pay attention to nature, to live deliberately, to take stock of the things around us that we don’t want to lose. There may be bigger challenges in the world today than the growing and harvesting of seaweed, but the responsibility and care—the paying attention—that the individuals in Ms. Shetterly’s seascape represent endow us with the fortitude to do the same.”—Wall Street Journal   “Nature writer Shetterly details why this hardy alga deserves safeguarding. In evocative prose, she describes seaweed’s role in the environment, especially in her coastal home of “Downeast Maine,” and the people who study, harvest, sell, eat and protect it.”—Scientific American   “Riveting . . . a lyrical and timely chronicle.”—BBC Culture   “A lovely, first-person consideration of the diaphanous organisms—and an evaluation of their environmental history and promise: a carbon-absorbing environmental superhero, macro-algae biofuel may fuel your VWs and Hondas in the future, to boot.”—Vogue “Maine is linked to two profoundly important writers of the 20th century, E. B. White and Rachel Carson. Shetterly reminds me of both.”—The Bangor Daily News   “A measured, wise little book . . . [Shetterly] has a gift for description.”—Portland Press HeraldPraise for Settled in the Wild by Susan Hand Shetterly: “Shetterly is a writer whose precise eye is directly connected not just to a quicksilver mind but also a good, generous heart. Her prose is spare, elegant, rich in metaphor, and haunting.”—Richard Russo “With this tender and tough book, Shetterly creates an offering of native awareness that deserves to be placed alongside Aldo Leopold, Marjorie Stoneman Douglas, and Noel Perrin, all writers of community, insight and resolve.”—Terry Tempest Williams “There is magic in the way Shetterly has proceeded into her life—with daily awe and hunger—and there is generosity, eloquence, and great intelligence in this telling.”—Rick Bass “With wisdom and leavening humor, Susan Hand Shetterly tells tales of a small town and the woods around it, of her family and neighbors, two-legged and four, of the sound of wind and the cacophony of silence.”—Richard Louv “Settled in the Wild draws a beautiful portrait of life lived in utter harmony with the natural world—life as it ought to be lived.”—Alice Waters “What a beautiful little book. It reads like you're listening to water flowing over stones. Shetterly writes with great detail and understanding, and you feel immersed in her world.”—Lynne Cox

“Don't it always seem to goThat you don't know what you've got til it's gone”Joni Mitchell’s 1970 lyrics might well apply to a crisis one rarely hears about or sees in the headlines: disappearing forests of seaweed along the Atlantic seaboard. How important is this… really? If you value seafood, you will valueMacroalgae, or seaweed in its many American varieties as a natural resource not to be taken for granted as has happened with certain types of native fish, no longer readily available (have you checked the price per pound of fish compared to meat and poultry at your local market recently?)In her just released 2018 book, “Seaweed Chronicles: A World at the Water’s Edge”, Maine writer Susan Hand Shetterly will open your eyes and minds to this remarkable resource, not only as a food but also as a key additive to a variety of daily use products. And, ultimately, why its dubious future is important to you.A long-time year-round Down East resident, Shetterly writes not just about the variety, history and uses of seaweed as a food stock and extensive product ingredient. Through individual stories she portrays local resident struggles to find balance between voracious human (and other species) demand for its consumption and conservationist efforts to preserve this resource and its biome benefits.Through thirteen chapters, she takes you through the misty and rugged Gulf of Maine world starting with the variety of seaweeds extant, their role as a life force for a variety of species, large and miniscule, and showing the interconnected relationships among these sea forests and clams, alewives (fish that support cod), young cod, eider ducks. Without assigning cause, she discusses the impact of warming waters and portrays how it impacts sea life behavior. And later she digs into efforts by various Maine groups – individuals, small and large businesses and the government – to strike a balance among seemingly competing interests. The core issues revolve around commercial harvesting techniques that can be destructive to seaweeds but provide income versus local efforts to ensure a renewable resource. One particularly interesting example was the shift in Japanese demand for seaweed, a huge dietary staple, due to the 2011 Fukushima nuclear accident. Alarmed Japanese consumers increased demand for clean seaweed from the US market (both coasts) driving a short-term jump in harvesting. It was a boon for large international operations such as Acadian Seaplants out of Canada, operating in Maine since 2004, but more limited benefit for local American producers.Shetterly writes: A 2016 United Nations report on world seaweed harvests…reached 26 million wild wet tons with Chile, China and Norway as largest harvesters. Top-producers of aquaculture-based seaweed are China, Indonesia and the Philippines. It is also a lucrative enterprise in Ireland (carrageenan), Iceland and France. Harvesting has been an US occupation since before the Revolutionary War.This is no small business... but contrary to our presumptions based on American history, not a limitless resource. Too much or careless harvesting without thoughtful conservation can deplete it and result in years, if not decades, of recovery."Seaweed Chronicles" is an opportunity to explore an issue of personal relevance… as it unfolds, not after.

Even if you're not sure you want to eat this bounty from the sea. It is well written and researched as one might expect given the author's academic credentials. I most enjoyed the "people" perspective but found the environmental battles and issues a little dry - even though I'm sure the author wrote for exactly this reason.

This rich little book advances the argument to protect rockweed (Ascophyllum) through fascinating Maine characters, sad stories of overfishing, and careful constructions of how all things are connected in coastal life. It wouldn't be a stretch to compare Susan Hand Shetterly to Rachel Carson.

A terrific book if you live along the coast, especially the Maine coast.

Well-written book on subject of internet to me.

I think the author is a little sketchy on her evident belief in climate change. Otherwise extremely enjoyable.

Seaweed Chronicles is all about seaweed – the harvesting of seaweed for medicines, cosmetics, soil enrichments, edible oils, bandaging for skin burns, food, and food supplements, as well as prospects for biofuels. This book is also about the fish, birds, snails, clams, eagles, sea lions, whales, and every animal that lives around seaweed. And it’s a collection of stories about individual people who work and live on the shore, associated in some way with seaweed. Protecting it is at the heart of the author’s passion. Shetterly writes of fisherpeople, biologists, fishway architects, and physologists. She writes of seaweed in all forms and names – kelp, bladder wrack, rockweed, wakame, kombu, sargassum, Irish moss, carrageenan, porphyra, nori, gambler’s grass, and so on.The author is from Maine in America, so much of the information is localized to her state: the people, the Gulf of Maine, the eider ducks, the European green crabs, the coastline, the intertidal zone, the lobsters, the periwinkles, the rockweed, and the world according to Ascophyllum – all leading to seaweed conservation.Seaweed are not plants in the true sense because they have no roots, no leaves, and no stems – they are multi-celled macro-algae. And they are usually forgotten in terms of conservation. This is an interesting book that goes beyond exploring the beauty and complexity of seaweed. It explores wild coastlines and communities and conservation, an essential habitat for both people and animal life, and the interconnectedness of people with their living environment.

Author Shetterly skillfully interweaves information about the burgeoning Maine seaweed industry with first person stories from people who live and work along the coast of downeast Maine. The reader may be amazed to discover that harvesting seaweed is fast replacing other seafood industries that have been shuttered due to overfishing. What especially shines through in this engaging book is the author's passion for the sea's amazing abundance, a passion shared by the people she interviews who are concerned about keeping the seaweed harvesting industry ethical and sustainable. Shetterly has the ability to paint a rich portrait of life at the ocean's edge in Maine, so much so that you can almost smell and taste the brisk sea salt air as you read her story.

About the Author

Stan and Jan Berenstain introduced the first Berenstain Bear books in 1962. Mike Berenstain grew up watching his parents work together to write about and draw these lovable bears. Eventually he started drawing and writing about them too.  Though Stan died in 2005, and Jan in 2012, Mike continues to create the delightful Bear adventures from his studio in Pennsylvania, in an area that looks much like the sunny dirt road deep in Bear Country.

Great Berenstain Bears Easter Book which also explained the real meaning of Easter - Jesus Christ. I highly recommend!

Bought this for my 4 yr old cousin for Easter. She absolutely loved this sticker book!!

Lot of fun for kids, particularly if they are fans of Bernstein bears.

I purchased this book for an Easter gift for my grandkids. They love the Berenstain Bears stories so this was a great hit.

Lots of fun activities for kids - my granddaughter, age 6, loved it.

“The Berenstain Bears Easter Fun Sticker and Activity Book” was sent to me by Zonderkidz – a division of Zondervan Publishing – in exchange for my honest review. This Sticker and Activity book was written and illustrated by Mike Berenstain…the son of the late Stan and Jan Berenstain, who introduced the Berenstain Bears series in 1962. It is full of fun puzzles and activities and over 50 reusable stickers.I would say that some of these puzzles are a little more difficult and children may need to be a little older to understand them…maybe second to about sixth grade. There are spot the difference, fill in the blank, color by number, mazes, hidden objects, etc. that may be a little more difficult.I feel this would be a fun book for elementary age children and I would recommend it.

The Berenstain Bears Bear Easter Fun Sticker & Activity Book is a 32 page activity book with an insert of over 50 reusable stickers. The pages in the activity book are full-color (with the exceptions of the images that are intended to be colored in by the child). In my opinion, this sticker and activity book would probably work best for 4-7 year olds. There are a range of activities such as:- basic coloring- mazes- finding stickers to complete the pictures- word searches- message decoding activities- a crossword puzzle- a connect-the-dots picture (with numbers up through 29)- a color-by-number picture- ...and moreThe pages in The Berenstain Bears Bear Easter Fun Sticker & Activity Book cover various Easter themes that you might find in any of The Berenstain Bears books. Although this book is not a read-through of the Easter story, you will find references to Jesus, church, and the events of the Easter story.I am impressed at what you can get for under $7 retail. The full-color pages are fun to look at even without the activities, and the activities and stickers just add to the fun. I think that these sticker and activity books are a great value and would be a great gift for any child.FTC Declaration: The publisher has provided me with a complimentary copy of this book or advanced reading copy through their book review bloggers program. This does not change the fact that I will give my honest opinion in my reviews.

On a whim I decided to choose this book for review. Figured it would be a simple place-and-play sticker book.Boy was I wrong! And gladly so.Word finds, mazes, math problems, color by number, matching, patterns, dot-to-dot, crosswords, and deciphers: the list goes on.Definitely for school aged children, I found this to be a potentially great homeschooling book that aligns nicely with the Holy Bible.Highly interactive, this would be a great book for a child that will hold his/her creative interest.

#569 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I recently ordered this book as a prerequisite to Isabel Foxen Duke's master class. I believe that it is one of the best books that I have ever read about health and wellness. I have been dieting/bingeing/weight-cycling for over 20 years and have finally been able to release all of this and work on accepting and loving myself. Self-care is something that I haven't placed much emphasis on these days, but this book has helped me see that a large component of overall good health is taking the time to listen to my body and honor its needs. I no longer have guilt with food, though I also don't just sit around eating everything that I want. There is an amazing amount of balance when it comes to the intuitive eating practice. I can eat whatever I want, but I focus on what makes me FEEL good, whether it be physically or emotionally. I would caution those who have been dieting for over half of their existence (like me) that it might be tempting to take the guidelines in this book and turn them into rigid rules. Be patient with yourself as you go through this process. This book takes you back to the way that you were DESIGNED to eat. I have a few intuitive eaters in my life and while they are not all thin (body diversity is a real thing) they all tend to eat what they want with no real pull to it. I am experiencing this more and more with each passing day. I can let food go without a struggle and I am also learning to respect my fullness and stop eating when my body has told me that it has had enough. Intuitive eating has also been a portal through which to learn how to trust my body in other ways. I sleep when tired, drink when thirsty (and also attempt to maintain hydration before reaching the point of thirst) move with intention, or just sit with my feelings. I highly recommend this book!

My therapist suggested I look at this book. It changed my life like a magic bullet, even though I gave up believing in magic bullets that change your life in an instant. Reading just the first few chapters of this book completely melted away my compulsive overeating and obsession with sweets. I am not even joking! I have had issues with food my entire life and they've only worsened over the years. I was at the diet bottoming out described in this book. I recognized myself in so much of this book, its like it most of it was written based on my life. If you have reached the end of the dead end dieting road then this is the book you are looking for. Trying to lose weight with calorie or other restriction based diets is like slogging up a hill and (if you are more than a little overweight like me) you never reach the top. Intuitive eating takes your blinders off to reveal that you're already at the top and all you have to do is put one foot in front of the other and follow your path down to the green valley below.

This book changed my relationship with food completely. When I bought it about 6 months ago, I had just gained a few pounds after some big life stuff happened and just couldn't bring myself to diet it off. So I was binging a lot in preparation for this looming diet I eventually had to start. I'm not hugely overweight but like most women, I don't always feel great about my body and food choices.I was listening to NPR one day and heard a researcher talking about how dieting DOESN'T WORK, and in fact, it makes you wider in the long run. I thought this was interesting and did some research on similar topics- there are a lot of books out there about this idea! I thought this book was the best place to start.Fast forward to today. I don't binge anymore, hardly EVER. I feel very calm about food and my body. I'm not perfect (eating mindfully is hard) or model thin (but get serious). I did the steps in the beginning of just buying and eating the food I craved so badly and it was weird/hard. (You're already feeling fat and then you ate Oreos and chips and so much ice cream?? Yes I did, and then some.) And yes, I did gain some weight during this period, which was very hard to swallow on top of already feeling big. But you will find, if you indulge the cravings, they start to get fewer and quieter until "I'M GOING TO EAT EVERYTHING" becomes "I want 1 bowl of ice cream and I'm going to enjoy it and that's enough." It's subtle, but so powerful. When you don't call these foods "evil" anymore, they aren't so tempting. They're just food.Per the book, I haven't weighed myself since I started on this adventure. But I feel as if I at first I gained a bit, then am slowly losing now since I don't binge anymore. Like how weight gain sneaks up on you over time, weight loss should be the same way. I've focused much more on activity per the book (I started Zumba videos) which I also am not perfectly consistent at but more consistent than I have ever been before with exercise. If exercise is fun, it's so much easier to do. So whenever I get those "diet thoughts" I pop in the video and feel instantly more beautiful and strong when I'm done. No destructive fasting needed.Summary: The book is not a "quick fix" nor is it supposed to be. If you don't like your relationship with food, it will help you. Give up the idea of becoming a supermodel vegan and accept that it's okay to enjoy food for what it is and your body for what it is. Hopefully you will find this as freeing as I did.

Review

"Noll's daring and original style and sensibility has been brought to life in this expert translation. Lord is a brilliant introduction to a hero of Brazilian literature who deserves to be widely known in the English-speaking world." ― Jenny Offill, author of Dept. of Speculation"In dream-like prose that soon turns feverish, João Gilberto Noll manages to expansively embody the disorienting experiences of migration. Just like Joseph K., who was arrested without knowing the nature of his crime, the middle-age Brazilian writer who leaves Porto Alegre knows very little about why he has been offered an airplane ticket to London and a home in Hackney. Soon, he finds himself forgetting his language, reinventing his sexuality, and walking aimlessly through a city he wishes never to leave. Masterful, sensuous, and disquieting." ― Cristina Rivera Garza, author of The Taiga Syndrome"Noll is a master of prose, one of Brazil’s true literary icons." ― Literary Hub"One of the most celebrated writers in contemporary Brazilian literature." ― Guernica"João Gilberto Noll could make any life into a compelling novel." ― Music & Literature"The haunting sensibilities of João Gilberto Noll’s fiction point to why it’s continuing to find readers now, and why it continues to be all too relevant. This is unsettling fiction in the best way." ― The Culture Trip

This one's hit or miss. There are several devotions that are decent, but it's not consistent. If you're looking for a biblically based devotional for your preschooler, this is *not* it. You'll be skipping parts or altering what the author wrote because she occasionally espouses a works-based view of salvation. In other words, you need to do something for God to respond favorably towards you. This isn't the God of the Bible. If you're looking for a devotional that teaches you that you can save yourself with good works - this is the one for you, but that is not Christianity - it's religion. The one thing that sets Christianity apart from *all* other religions is that Jesus did the ultimate righteous deed of dying on the cross for our sins so that we wouldn't have to "work" for salvation, as Crystal Bowman espouses at times. Ephesians 2:8,9- "For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not of your own doing; it is the gift of God, not the result of works, so that no one may boast."Cons:-Inconsistent theology throughout devotional-Espouses works-based theology which is unbiblical and unchristian-Encourages the view that you need to be good for God to help you or love you or be happy with you-"The more you read the Bible and pray, the more God will help you." - no God will help you if you call out to Him, period...not if you read your Bible more and pray more.-"But God doesn't want us to worry about riches. Being a good person is more important." -Being a good person is more important? Actually, having a relationship with God is *most* important. Being a good person isn't the goal. Knowing and loving God is the goal. Loving others is a natural outflow of knowing and loving God.Pros:-Nice pictures-Cute, rhyming prayers-Dated so you know where you left off

Great book to read every night with my 4 and 2 year old. Each page has its own story that's easy for kids to understand and then a bible verse is related to the story with a short prayer.

The best book for my 2 girls ages 2.5 and 4.5! It is such a great devotion for small children and explains things so easy with precious stories. All pages less then a page so it’s easy to keep your littles attention! They also use the same characters thru the book making it easier for your kids to follow/understand!

We use this devotional daily with our 3 & 5 year old boys. It's perfect for their ages! Short & sweet life applicable lessons with a bible verse and prayer. The illustrations are cute and colorful! I can see us using this for years to come. Great children's daily devotional!!!

This book is great for starting conversations about God and our walk as Christians. I like how verses accompany the stories. The daily prayers rhymed and are great for kids to repeat. I worry a bit about a few of the messages making God's love almost conditional, but as a parents I feel that's my duty to communicate in a deeper way so it doesn't hold me back from using those days. I'm thankful for this book providing consistency and format to our time with Christ.

I read these devotionals daily with my 3 year old little boy. He is currently very interested in learning about Jesus and reading Bible stories, so of course I want to facilitate this as much as possible! :) We do our pocket calendar time, sing our days of the week/months of the year song, and then do our devotional. These devotions are short and sweet, and the perfect length for the young child. Each story ends with a bible verse and a prayer (usually rhymes in some way). The book uses the same handful of children throughout the book, which I think is a positive attribute for preschoolers. They are able to become familiar with the characters as they read each story. Overall, I definitely recommend this devotional.

I really love this book. I wanted to incorporate devotionals into my day with my daughters (age 2 & 4.5) but I was having a hard time with consistency. They both love this book and they are the ones asking for it, so I don't have to try and remember. We try to do it during meal time, but I'll do it any time they ask. It's also nice to teach them patience. My oldest will want me to read ahead and I get to teach her about looking forward to the day when we get to read whatever story she's looking at. The illustrations are very cute and my 2 year old will sit and look at the pictures for a long time by herself. But most importantly, the devotionals are high quality, point my children to Jesus and teach them of the great love God has for them. There is a bible verse and prayer with each devotional too. We've been using this book for months, and I'm confident we'll get several years of use out of it. I plan to make it one of my go-to gift items for other little kids.

I like this book for a couple of reasons. I like that the topics are age appropriate for a 4 year old. I like that there are specific dates so we know what to read every day. I like that there this a concept introduced and that there is a prayer and verse associated with each. I like that each prayer rhymes. I also like the diversity presented in the children in the book.If you are looking for a daily devotional for your 3 - 6 year old, this is perfect.
